VOLUME 21 / SUMMER 2010 Vision is published by the Memorial Medical Center Foundation, Springfield, Illinois MemorialMedicalFoundation.com • (217) 788-4700 Memorial Commits $100,000 for New Bloodmobile Following an emergency c-section, Lauren’s kidneys and liver failed. For several weeks she fought for her life. After receiving 250 units of blood, she rallied, recovered and is now doing well. Ninety-five percent of us who live to age 72 will need blood or blood products at some point in our lives, yet only 5 percent of the population donates blood on a regular basis. There is only one source available for blood supply – blood donors. A single blood donation serves many purposes. Red blood cells treat anemia and blood loss. Platelets help stop the bleeding. Plasma transports cells, replaces volume and assists in clotting. needs for a reliable and dependable source of blood. It now serves 19 area hospitals, although the largest users by a wide margin are Memorial and SJH. The old bloodmobile covered 81,000 miles, served nearly 2,000 bloodmobile operations and collected nearly 40,000 units of donated blood. The bloodmobile exceeded its useful life – experiencing several fires as well as mechanical difficulties. The increased downtime lead to a decrease in the volume of blood donations collected. In order to better serve blood donors in central and southern Illinois and meet the community’s need, CICBC purchased a new bloodmobile. The new unit will be fully self-contained Funding for the new bloodmobile was provided by both hospitals. Memorial Medical Center Foundation has committed $100,000 to the project. “The mission of the CIBC is to provide the highest quality blood and related services to meet the needs of the communities we serve”, states David Parsons, chief executive officer of the CICBC. “The new bloodmobile will help ensure that we can provide ample blood supply for those who need it,” added Parsons. Becker The Central Illinois Community Blood Center (CICBC) was established jointly in 1971 by Memorial Medical Center (Memorial) and St. John’s Hospital (SJH) to supply the two hospitals’ with five beds and two screening rooms. It can be parked at the worksite to accommodate employees allowing them to remain at their place of employment while donating blood. Michael A. Zook, MD Please consider making a contribution now to the Memorial Medical Center Foundation. From the Executive Director We are very pleased to announce a $1.5 million gift we received recently from the estate of Mary E. Munson, who passed away in 1981. You might wonder why it took nearly 30 years to receive this gift. The answer is simple: during those three decades, the Mary E. Munson estate was providing for the benefit of several relatives. When the last of them passed away late last year, the remainder of the estate passed to Memorial. Her financial advisors wisely used a very effective means of satisfying her wishes. They created a charitable remainder unitrust to provide income for several relatives, with a significant remainder gift to support Memorial’s healthcare mission. The Memorial Medical Center Foundation offers charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder unitrusts like Mary E. Munson’s. Both are forms of charitable giving and sound financial planning that allow you to take an immediate tax deduction, support the mission of a charity like the Foundation, and secure an income stream. In the case of a charitable gift annuity, the annual income stream provides additional peace of mind as it is fixed for the rest of your life – and, if you choose, that of your spouse. Benefits of planned giving techniques like these include: Large immediate tax deduction Annual annuity payments for life Capital gain is reduced and spread over life expectancy if funded with appreciated property Annuity income is partially tax free 2 VISION Elena Kezelis Estate tax savings, depending on future state of federal estate tax These types of arrangements are especially valuable for appreciated stock. By transferring the stock to the Foundation through a charitable gift annuity, you can spread the capital gain over your life expectancy (and, if you choose, that of your spouse), and guarantee a predictable future stream of income. If you prefer to explore possible hedges against future inflation as Mary E. Munson did, then a charitable remainder unitrust may be advisable. It provides a payout calculated on the basis of the changing value of the trust assets. Her financial advisors wisely used a very effective means of satisfying her wishes. What’s inside.... In either case, your thoughtfulness and generosity will support Memorial’s healthcare mission. Valet Service Provides Assistance to Cancer Patients Come rain, sleet or snow, the entrance attendants at Memorial Medical Center provide an invaluable service to patients and visitors. On an average day, the attendants park and retrieve approximately 212 cars for patients and visitors of Memorial and assist them with wheelchairs and personal belongings. This complimentary valet service is available to everyone. Many users are grateful - especially on days when the central Illinois weather leaves more to be desired - and offer monetary tips in appreciation. Since 2009, Memorial’s entrance attendants have been donating their tips to Memorial’s Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, which assists patients of Memorial’s Regional Cancer Center with living expenses relating to treatment. Requests for assistance greatly exceed funds available. More than $1,300 in valet tips have been donated to the fund by Memorial’s entrance attendants. David L. Continuing education, outreach programs, health promotions and disease prevention are the many ways in which Friends make an impact. Friends' goal of promoting the welfare of the medical center and the communities we serve continues today through the presentation of community education programs that have touched thousands of lives throughout central Illinois. Among the highly successful programs we are offering this year are: • Health seminars – Friends of Memorial sponsored a program on the prevention and management of diabetes. The event, held April 13, at Memorial Medical Center, was free and open to the public. An in-service for healthcare professionals was held the following day. • Babysitting clinics for children age 11 and older who would like to prepare for babysitting • CPR for babysitters after completion of the babysitting clinic • Sibling preparation classes for children expecting a new baby brother or sister • Pre-HOP for daycare centers and pre-schools • Crayons and coloring books for children visiting waiting rooms in the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department • Bereavement program which offers support and comfort to those who have lost an infant In addition to Friends’ regular activities, we are thrilled to begin offering annual scholarships to nursing students who will commit to employment at Memorial after completing their studies. Friends will partner with Memorial again on the Women’s SportsCare Biathlon as well as on a new health fair event focusing on breast cancer awareness and other women’s health issues. The new event, titled Memorial’s Be Aware Women’s Fair, will be held on October 16 in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Our ability to offer these programs to you depends heavily on the support that we receive. Whether you can volunteer or provide financial support through membership in Friends of Memorial, your commitment is vital. For more information or to join Friends of Memorial, please call Memorial’s Volunteer Services Department at (217) 788-3352. Sincerely, Joyce Tomaw President of Friends of Memorial The Pre-hospitalization Program offered by Friends of Memorial familiarizes young children with hospital care. Specially prepared baskets of hands-on items are delivered to area preschools. Children can examine blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, otoscopes, hospital gowns and x-rays while in a familiar setting. This helps introduce children to medical equipment before they or loved ones are hospitalized. Primary Stroke Center Certification Memorial Medical Center Earns Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, the nation’s third leading cause of death. Strokes occur when blood flow to a region of the brain is obstructed, either by blockage in an artery that supplies blood to the brain or by bleeding of ruptured blood vessels in the brain. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today. Memorial Medical Center has earned certification as a primary stroke center from The Joint Commission. The certification recognizes Memorial for “exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care,” according to The Joint Commission. Primary stroke centers tailor treatment to individual needs, adhere to national stroke guidelines and continually assess and improve how care is delivered. Memorial offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to stroke care with an integrated program that addresses the complete spectrum of care from prevention to rehabilitation. Comprehensive care includes dedicated stroke response teams that provide a fast diagnosis and treatment to stroke patients who arrive in Memorial’s emergency department to rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Memorial’s rehabilitation facilities are among only four others worldwide to hold a fivefold accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, including accreditation for our stroke specialty program. (Hack) Kellner; his wife, Janet; son, Bill; and Bill’s wife, Julie - have all served as volunteers. In 2000, the Kellner Family established the H. J. Kellner Professorship in Cardiology in memory of Hack. Throughout the years, M.J. Kellner Company has been a major sponsor of Memorial’s Festival of Trees and provides support to the annual employee giving campaign, MASH. The Kellner Family’s most recent contribution will help support patient care. 10 VISION From left to right: Bill Kellner, President of M.J. Gerdanc Celebrates 20 Years It was 20 years ago that a small steering committee was formed to make plans for a new community holiday event that would raise funds for Memorial Medical Center. Since then Memorial’s Festival of Trees, as it is known today, has grown into a nine-day event featuring over 150 exquisitely decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces. Approximately 30,000 people from throughout central Illinois attended the 20th Annual Festival of Trees held November 21-29 in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. This year’s Festival featured a larger than life 20-foot decorated tree in the center of the building surrounded by over 60 handmade gingerbread houses, 20 student trees and the Candy Cane Express train. Over 2,000 local amateur and professional performers provided live entertainment during Memorial’s Festival of Trees. In addition, Santa and Mrs. Claus were on-hand to visit with children and have their photo taken with them. Pam Allen, the chair of the 2009 Festival, chose the theme “Tinsel, Trees and Memories” to celebrate the season. Over $200,000 was raised from the event which supports healthrelated projects and programs in the community. Dr. and Mrs. James L. Gildner Mr. and Mrs. Gerald S. Gill, II Ms. Melinda J. Civil War Medicine: Divided by Conflict; United by Compassion The Civil War period is often perceived to have been a time of primitive and brutal healthcare. What was the impact of medical care on the Civil War and what changes to the field of medicine came out of this conflict? Betsy Estilow, Professor of Biology and adjunct instructor in Civil War history at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, provided answers to over 300 guests at an exclusive event held June 4 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The event, titled Civil War and the Practice of Medicine, gave participants the opportunity to visit with Dr. Elvin Zook, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and view his Civil War-era medical collection. The event was presented jointly by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation and Memorial Medical Center Foundation. Donating to the MASH campaign is a way for employees to give back to Memorial. Last year employees pledged more than $225,000 for patient care initiatives, staff education programs and clinical research. Contributions to the campaign represented an increase of nearly 12 percent over the previous year and the number of employees participating increased by more than 5 percent. More than $2.2 million has been raised through MASH since it began in 1988 for projects and programs at Memorial. Participants may designate their gift to a specific department or leave their gift unrestricted to be used where the need is greatest. One popular designation is Memorial’s SystemCare Fund, which provides financial support to Memorial employees who experience a personal emergency such as a fire or catastrophic illness in the family. SystemCare Provides Support to Employee in Need One of the highlights of the annual MASH Kick Off Celebration is a performance by children of Memorial’s Child Care. Andrea, a registered nurse on the 4G surgical unit, is grateful for the assistance she received from MASH donations restricted to SystemCare – the employee emergency fund. Andrea, her husband and three children lost their home and belongings in a house fire. They did not have insurance to cover their losses. The assistance she received from SystemCare helped them get back on their feet again. ”Thanks to SystemCare, I was able to purchase some basic necessities for me and my family”, said Andrea. “I am eternally grateful to my fellow employees for their generous support of this fund.” MMC FOUNDATION STAFF Executive Director Elena Kezelis Associate Director of Development Barbara Eades Foundation Event Manager Amanda Johnson Executive Secretary Sharon Michel Foundation Assistant Emily Marshall Manager of Finance Lisa Turasky
