Learning This Week
Literacy
Y1 – Exploring poetry that uses the five senses. Sorting adjectives into the five senses and learning how to
write a simple simile.
Y2 – We continue looking at the features of non-chronological reports using reports about dinosaurs. We’ll
be looking in detail at features such as titles, headings, sub-headings, labels, captions, opening paragraphs,
diagrams and pictures.
Y3 - In Literacy we will be planning and writing a non-chronological report. Children will be again be
focusing on constructing paragraphs and using connectives.
Y4 – This is our last week of narrative writing, which will end with the students completing a ‘best write’
about a pirate. Hopefully the students will be applying their knowledge of complex sentences and
incorporating speech marks within this piece of work.
Y5 – Our theme this term is African Adventure. We will be reading traditional stories and looking at the
features. We will compare written stories and write a traditional story.
Y6 – This week, we will continue to read ‘The Odyssey’ and to develop diary writing skills. The children will
also be proof-reading and correcting texts that have had punctuation removed and deliberate grammatical
mistakes added.
Maths
Y1 - Counting objects in 2s. Sorting odd and even numbers using a venn diagram. Doubling and halving
numbers.
Y2 - We will look at simple multiplication, starting with the language of multiplication (groups of, lots of,
repeated addition) and moving on to using manipulatives to perform simple multiplications.
Y3 – In Maths pupils will be learning to plot coordinates on an x and y axis and giving directions. They will
be looking at a variety of grids including maps. By the end of the week they will create their own map.
Y4 - For Maths this week, students are looking at decimals. They will learn about the place value of a
decimal to 3 places, look at how to add decimals and how to round a number with one decimal to the
nearest whole number.
Y5 – Mr. Givens - multiplying and dividing decimals, ratio and proportion. Ms. Berg - division of 4 digit
numbers by 1 digit. Mrs. Potgieter, Mr.Manley, Mr. Ross - subtracting and adding fractions.
Y6 – This week, the children will be finding fractions of amounts e.g. two thirds of 33. The children will also
be converting fractions, decimals and percentages.

There was a date error on Mrs Cliffe’s last newsletter
regarding the Parent Feedback Evening. The date
should have read Monday 22nd February, 6pm, MPH
(not Tuesday). We apologise for any inconvenience
caused.
This open evening is to provide you with an
opportunity to ask Mrs Cliffe and Mr McGuire any
question you would like about the school, but is not
a forum to discuss issues about individual children.
Year Group News, Requests & Reminders
Science Day – Just A Minute!
Year 4
Trips to Aspire Park, w/c 7th February. Letters have now
been sent out to all pupils regarding their trip to Aspire
Park. Please ensure you return the permission form and
QR15 by Thurs 28th Jan, to your child’s class teacher.
Year 4 students are completing a challenge on Thursday
to create a marble run that will last 60 seconds and need
resources to build it. If you have any spare cardboard
tubes, fabrics, plastic tubes or general craft materials,
please send these into school with your child this week.
Year 5
Spelling: a reminder that spelling homework needs to
handed in on Thursday, the day of the spelling test.
Science Made Fun: Weds 27th Jan. Please remember to
return the form and QR45 asap if you have not already
done so.
African Adventure: our theme this term is African
Adventure and we will be making African masks. Students
will be working in groups of 4 and between them need to
bring in large cardboard cartons, kitchen / toilet roll
tubes, egg cartons, plastic bottle tops and string. Thank
you.
On Thursday 28th January everyone in the school
will become scientists for the day when we hold
our annual Science Day.
This year the day is called ‘Just a Minute’ and
teachers are busy planning investigations which
take just 60 seconds! The aim of the day is to give
children as many opportunities as possible during
the day to go through the scientific process (ask
questions, generate hypotheses, perform tests,
analyse results and draw conclusions).
To help us with the measuring of time and to help
emphasise the theme we would like you to try
and make sure your child brings a watch or
stopwatch to school that day. It will be a ‘wear a
watch to school’ day.

International Week Parade
