TANDANYA 25
2014 EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the National
Aboriginal Cultural Institute, Tandanya presents
TANDANYA25
- a dynamic visual arts program to showcase ideas,
stimulate discussion, forge networks and create
opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
artists, curators, writers and thinkers.
TANDANYA25 is the opportunity to honour and
extend the relationships that have informed Tandanya’s
past twenty-five years. We celebrate them in a new
platform that opens up pathways for professional artistic
practitioners. Collaborations with ‘sister’ organisations
nationwide throughout this program are designed to
build capacity in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
community arts sector and afford artists promotional
opportunities beyond State and Territory borders.
This diverse program includes solo and group exhibitions
by emerging artists from South Australia and a survey
exhibition of a senior South Australian artist. There
is a focus on the presentation of Aboriginal-curated
exhibitions. Group exhibitions acknowledge significant
historical expressions and contemporary directions that
confirm the resilience and current enquiry and exploration
of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists into new
modes of expression, so that culture can engage with new
media. Artists express themselves and their cultures every
which way and every way possible.
This guide presents just some of the highlights of
TANDANYA25. Offerings in 2014 also include
workshops, cultural performances, events, film screenings,
educational initiatives, and other activities, including
Tandanya’s annual multi-arts Spirit Festival.

FOUR ROOMS
25 February - 5 April
Like film, a work of visual art will often involve numerous
creatives – sometimes explicitly acknowledged, generally not
– who together contribute to the production of the work. Four
Rooms takes its name from the 1995 anthology film where four
narratives take place in four individual rooms, each story led by
its own director, stitched together by a bellhop character. Four
Rooms is a multi-sensory exhibition comprising individual room
environments created by some of Australia’s leading Aboriginal
artists who have collaborated with other visual arts practitioners
– filmmakers, designers and manufacturers. Each ‘room
environment’ features new work, drawing on video, objects,
sound and lighting, to articulate alter/native responses to themes
of space, time and authorship.
