Congratulations to our robotics teams who
took part in the Queensland State RoboCup on
the weekend. We had three teams comprising
students from Years 5 – 10. There were well over
a hundred teams from all over Queensland taking
part in the competition which took place at the
University of Queensland.
Saturday saw the Middle School team compete
in the Primary Dance competition. Their team
name was ‘Wall-E Botters’ with Josh Hinman,
Edward Narbutas, Lachlan Selth, Douglas Whitla
and Aidan Lawrence. These boys recreated
scenes from the movie Wall-E using two robots
as the main characters. After some last minute
improvements the boys presented a wonderful
performance for the crowd. This competition
draws skills from design, engineering,
programming and performance.
On Sunday we had a Middle School team and
a Senior School team competing in the Rescue
competition. ‘The Fluffy Puppies’ with George
Thomas, Alexander Hupje, and Vinesh Nangia is
a team of Year 5 students who were competing
at this type of competition for the first time.
The boys improved their programming skills
immensely during the day and finished 5th in
their division.
The senior team ‘Nuts and Volts’ of Lachlan
Teale, Alyssa Pang and Mackenzie Salisbury
were competing in the most competitive
category of Senior Rescue. This team were not
only successful in their own division but were
also incredibly supportive of the junior team,
providing them with moral support and a few
engineering and programming suggestions.

Sunday evening is one
of the annual highlights
on the College’s musical
calendar. The ‘Performer
of the Year’ Recital
will be held in the St
Peters Lutheran College
Performing Arts Centre,
and I invite all members
of the community to
enjoy a fine night of
entertainment beginning at 6.30pm. Details
are to be found in this publication, and on the
College’s website.
Congratulations to our staff and students for
achieving outstanding results in this year’s
NAPLAN testing regime. Our results are well
above the State and National average and over
time, we have shown continuous improvement
in all areas. Please note that NAPLAN represents
one set of data measured at a point in time,
and any results should be read in the context of
other indicators such as academic results and
qualitative survey feedback. Our teaching staff
will continue to use all of this information to
inform the programs of the College.
Living in the Now
in Love!
Next week, at Alice Springs, Principals from
Lutheran schools across Australia will gather
for the first time in four years. There are 86
Lutheran schools in every State or Territory
(except the ACT), and the number of students
attending Lutheran schools is particularly high
in Queensland and South Australia. Why Alice
Springs? The Lutheran Church of Australia
and Lutheran education have been significant
contributors to the general educational scene in
the Northern Territory for nearly a century, and
today, there is a strong smattering of Lutheran
schools from Alice Springs to Darwin. St Peters
is the largest school in the system, all schools
are co-educational, and there are five boarding
schools from Adelaide to Cairns.
I enjoy the wonderful stories and insights of
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. In ‘A Hatful
of Sky’ 11 year old witch Tiffany is targeted by a
primordial hiver which takes her over (as it has
many other life forces previously). She finally
realises that she has to welcome it, hear its
deepest fears, not use its powers for her own
selfish motives, and show it the way through.
It cannot cope with the endless experience of
being aware of everything in the huge universe,
and it envies humans who seem to blank
that awareness out and ignore it. ‘You don’t
see (a tree’s) history, feel the pumping of the
sap, hear every insect in the bark, sense the
chemistry of the leaves…’ It is overwhelmed.
Adrian Wiles, Head of College
Deputy Head of College
Last Friday it gave
me great pleasure to
be able to announce
the School Captains
and Vice-Captains
for 2015.
Our College Captains
are: Georgia Champion
and Philipp Steinke
and our Vice-Captains
are: Sophie Taylor
and Pat Andrews. All four students were very
impressive throughout the selection process and
I know they will proudly lead the community.
Thank you to all students who applied for these
positions, it was a thorough process and all the
Ministry
applicants were outstanding and proved that
they had a great deal to give to the community.
This week see the beginning of the process to
determine the remaining positions for the 2015
Leadership Team. Good Luck to all those who
have taken the greatest step of applying.
Safety on Campus
A reminder to all Parents, Staff and Students to
ensure that when on campus outside of school
hours to remain in well-lit areas. Safety is our
paramount concern and we are not a closed
community, which means that vehicles can enter
the grounds. If you notice a suspicious vehicle on
campus please contact Reception immediately.
(And What Terry Pratchett Hints At?)
Cosmology (how the universe began) tells us of
everything coming out of a burst of immense
energy, with things working out just right to
make life here on earth. The Bible talks of
creation as coming from God, carefully planned,
just right to make life here on earth. As we listen
to the Bible account of how God works in Christ,
we can see that same pattern that science just
hints at, of dying to make new life (the elements
needed to make us being created in the death of
stars), of everything connected.
Tiffany’s hiver got it wrong. This universe is made
in love. Even our worst losses and mistakes are
used by God, who carries our pain and grief in
deep love and holds everything together.
The invitation is to trust that life is good; that
we are held in love; that there is always a
way through.
And I find it fascinating that Terry Pratchett gives
us an 11 year old who is immensely capable,
who has to learn through painful mistakes, and
who is shielded and helped by competent adults,
and who has to learn that life is about using her
powers to serve.

Please stop by and say hello to Chaplain Kirstin Munchenberg, who is now located in Junior School.
You can find Kirstin in an office just off the Junior School reception. We look forward to her continuing
to work closely with our families. Ms Jo Pearn, the P-6 Curriculum Co-ordinator has relocated to a
larger office adjacent to Belfield Hall to continue the great work she has done this year with the staff

Music Week Assembly
In Week 7, St Peters will be celebrating Music Week across the College. As a part of these celebrations,
the Junior School has been invited to the Performing Arts Centre to watch a performance by the
Symphonic Wind. This premiere ensemble will be touring in the USA later in the year and so it is a
fabulous opportunity for our young audience. This will take place instead of our regular assembly on

Bushdance News
This week the Preps, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 classes were enthralled to learn a new bush dance
taught by the professional dance group, ‘Dance Fever’. Each year level were taught a new dance to
expand on their already extensive repertoire of bush dances and demonstrated to these professionals
how they certainly knew their boot scoot’n moves. We were all impressed by not only the children’s
focus and attention but their incredible ability to learn these new dances so quickly. The children
shuffled, clapped, kicked and moved rhythmically for nearly an hour and a half, demonstrating
steps that every country folk would be proud of. All we can say is “YEEEEE HA … can’t wait for the
bush dance.”

For more photos of Captain Jellybean's treasure hunt, visit St Peters' App photo galleries…
Ahoy there me hearties! On Friday 8 August, the Year 1 pirate crew assembled in their trusty ship ‘The
Belfield’ charged with the job of finding Captain Jellybean’s long lost treasure. After meeting Captain
Jellybean, his ship mate Sam and Billy the parrot, the pirates set sail in search of jewels and riches. Lots
of fun was had by all on board – singing pirate shanties and doing some pirate jigs.
Unfortunately, the ship hit a storm, the waves were HUGE and the pirates were forced to take shelter
below decks for a while. Imaginary cold porridge was on the menu for the pirates’ breakfast (you
should have seen their faces)! Those that wouldn’t eat their porridge were forced to walk the plank,
facing treacherous tickling-shark infested waters! Luckily the pirates survived and climbed back on
board to continue the adventure. Some climbed the mast to the crow’s nest to see what they could
see – there was land ahoy! The treasure was close now – they could feel it in their bones, aaaaargh!
They had to climb through a cave filled with spiders, webs and moving hands – scary stuff but low and
behold… the pirates found the treasure chest. Captain Jellybean opened the treasure box carefully,
inside were… jellybeans of course! Captain Jellybean shared his loot with all his pirate helpers and they
all gave a mighty ‘Hoy’!

Appointments
Middle School students have been very active
reaching out to communities beyond the school
in recent times. On Assembly this week students
presented a cheque to Ozcare to help them with
the wonderful work they do in the Goodna area.
We had a visit from a representative for GirlUp all
the way from the USA who speak to the students
as a result of some wonderful work by a group of
Middle School girls. We heard about the results
of our World Vision involvement and the 40 Hour
Famine involvement.
Parents are asked to please make prior
arrangements to meet with teachers. This can
be done by emailing the teacher directly, or
by contacting the Middle School Reception on
3377 6266. Teachers are more than willing to talk
with you, however their commitment to their
class means they are often not available without
prior arrangements. Many of the teachers are
involved in extra-curricular activities before and
after school. There are times during the day
when teachers may not be in class and may be
able to arrange a time to meet during these
lessons. Thank you for your understanding.
Congratulations to the students in Middle School
for their Community Service focus. They are
making a difference.

Year 7 News
There is certainly a buzz in the air in Year 7. Last week’s Science expo in the Junior School gave the
opportunity for some of our Year 7’s to help out with the event.
During this busy time there are a couple of ways to help your child get on top of things and feel less
stressed and anxious. As a parent myself, I have learnt (at times much to my frustration) that, to a
child, there is a difference between ‘homework’ and ‘assignment’. As the assessment tasks come
online towards the end of the term, so too at times does the homework decrease to compensate for
the amount of time needed to complete the assignment. My advice is that when a student answers
“no” to the question “Do you have any homework?” it may be time to ask what assignments are due.

Years 7-9 Girls
National Self-Detection Program for
Scoliosis (NSDP)
The Self-Detection Brochure for Scoliosis
is now available to Years 7-9 girls at the
Scoliosis Australia website.
Well done to all students for the way you
participated in various Junior High week activities
last week. Junior High began at St Peters in 2007
with the aim of providing ‘SUPPORT THROUGH
TRANSITION’ by creating a separate sub-school
where students could feel a sense of belonging
and connectedness. Last week was dedicated to
having fun and celebrating many of things that
make Junior High great.
Last week’s activities included:
• Monday: Lunch time performances by Junior
High students in the PAC servery;
• Tuesday: Lunch game of touch on the MS oval
between teachers and students. I believe the
final result was a draw;
• Thursday: ‘Are You Smarter than an 8th
Grader’ – quiz show in the MS Undercroft
where a Year 8 team competed against Middle
School Captains. Bagging rights this year go to
the Middle School team with a final score of
6 - 3; and
• Friday: Ironbark themed relay in the Chapel
forecourt with teams made up of Year 9s and
Senior School students. It was great to see Mr
Matthew Sullivan (Director of Ironbark) who
was able to make it for the event and many
of the senior students were excited about
having the opportunity to show off their whip
cracking skills again.
Also on Friday Junior High students were allowed
to come to school in free dress. Only a small
number students chose to come dressed in
their ‘Country & Western’ gear but it was lovely
to see that many still made a donation to our
chosen charity Aussie Helpers and a total of $330
was raised.

IMPACT – Leaving your mark on the world
From the moment we take our first breath we are
bombarded with sights, sounds, emotions and
actions which will shape who we are to become.
The impact of some events may leave us fearful
and hurt. Others may challenge us and even
empower us to do great things. We in turn can
impact on the decisions and directions of those
we come in contact with. Understanding the
power of such impacts should make us consider
carefully what actions we take.
Impacts that nurture: For a child to grow to
maturity takes a nurturing and supportive
environment. To reach our full potential we
need to surround ourselves with people who
encourage our dreams and help us to make

decisions that will help us reach our potential.
We also need to be the friend who encourages
others and has the strength to keep them from
going down destructive pathways.
Impacts that weaken: While at times we can
overcome detrimental impacts, there are some
which may have a very damaging effect on
the way our life turns out. Drugs, alcohol and
destructive friendships limit our ability to make
the most of our lives, and in some instance can
lead to tragic outcomes.
Impacts that challenge: No matter how good our
intentions are, and no matter how well we plan
our future, life sometimes throws up challenges
that may seem so overwhelming that we feel
powerless to overcome them. Meeting these
challenges with determination and courage can,
however, lead to outcomes that astound us.
Impacts that empower: Like a stone thrown into
a pond, the ripple effect of our actions can reach
well beyond our own community. Reaching out
to help those in need can empower them to take
control of their lives and give them hope for the
future. It can also enrich our lives and give us a
sense of purpose.
As we navigate the obstacles and seize the
opportunities that are presented us, we need to
be aware that how we respond to these events,
the decisions we make and the pathways we
choose will come to define who we are. We can
become discouraged or inspired by what life
hands out to us. We can also turn the despair
that others feel into optimism by making our
impact one of support and hope.
The program was narrated by Elena Wangurra is
a young Indigenous person who grew up on the
Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory.
Stories shared through the program…
Ryan Campbell was inspired to fly from a young
age and by his fifteenth birthday he was able to
fly solo. He then set himself the goal of being the
youngest person to fly solo around the world.
Through determination he was able to overcome
numerous hurdles and he was able to achieve
this goal in 2013 at age nineteen.
Elia was a sixteen year old suffering from

to give her the resilience needed to find her way

other girls working through similar issues.
Sam Ford was walking to a night club for his first
time clubbing since turning eighteen. A punch
from a drunken attacker left him with a fractured
skull and massive long term brain damage. He
now requires full time care from his family and
finds it very difficult to communicate.
Marita Cheng (2012 Young Australian of the Year)
was surprised that so few girls were studying
engineering in her university engineering course.
To encourage girls to go into this field, she started
Robogals which brings robotic workshops to high
school students. Robogals now has thousands
of volunteers and operates throughout Australia
and in the UK, US and Japan.
Daniel Flynn (2014 Victorian Young Australian of
the Year) was struck by the contrast between the
millions of people with no access to clean water,
and the millions of dollars spent in Australia on
bottled water, despite having ready access to
clean water from the tap. Along with a couple of
friends he started the “Thankyou water” social
enterprise – selling bottled water in Australia
and investing profits in clean water projects in
developing nations.

Staffing News
The trophy is awarded to the Independent
Queensland school with the highest scores in the
Language Perfect Championships, which took
place in May this year.
On Friday we will farewell Mrs Lisa Wyatt. Mrs
Wyatt is heading off on maternity leave and
we wish her all the best on the up and coming
addition to the family.
Mr Martin Schaefer will be on leave until Term
4. Mr Schaefer’s Year 8 Science class will be
taken over by Ms Liz Holt who oversees the
Year 8 Science program. We are in the process
of organising a permanent relief teacher for his
German classes.
Semester Two Pre-service Teachers
A number of Junior High classes will have
pre-service teachers attached to them this
semester. Gaining work experience ‘in the field’ is
a mandatory part of teacher training and involves
a number of stages or blocks of time. Pre-Service
teachers work through stages from spending time
purely observing classes up to ‘internships’ where
they are given provisional teacher registration
and are able to teach, assess and report on
units of work. Throughout all of these stages
pre-service teachers are supervised, monitored
and work closely with experienced teachers.
Should you have any queries or concerns please
contact the supervising teacher involved. We
welcome the following pre-service teachers to
St Peters:
University of Queensland:
• Miss Rebecca Harris – supervised by Mrs
Vanessa Bermingham (27/7 – 19/9)
Queensland University of Technology:
• Miss Jennifer Bunce – supervised by Mrs
Ingrid Rucinski and Mr Steve Petherick (18/8
– 3/11)
Australian Catholic University:
• Miss Nikita Prinsloo – supervised by Mrs
Pauline Donaldson (4/8 – 12/9)
Latest ‘Parenting Ideas INSIGHTS’ available
The August edition of Michael Grose’s Parenting
Ideas Insights are available. They’re all definitely
worth a read and the following two have been
placed on the Parent Info tab on the Junior High
page of the portal:
• Raising Calm Kids – With childhood and
adolescent anxiety on the rise there’s a simple
but powerful technique that all kids should
practice; and
• The drugs kids are actually using – Drug use
is something that parents need to talk about
with their children. Talking to young people
about drugs has a significant impact, but
you need to get the facts about the current
drugs available.
Mrs Kathy Harris, School Support Officer
(Teaching and Learning) of Independent Schools
Queensland, visited the Junior High Assembly on
Thursday 14 August to present a trophy to the
school.
The students nominated Adrien Dorleans to
formally accept the trophy on their behalf. This
was a most appropriate choice as Adrien gained
an Elite award for the second year running, which
is an exceptional achievement.
We hope St Peters will keep the trophy next year.

Teen Triple P
Seminars
What is Triple P?
Triple P is a parenting program comprised
of three seminars. Each seminaris 90
minutes and you can do one or all in the
series. They target everyday concerns,
such as how to encourage responsible
behaviour, improve family relationships,
how to deal with independence or
manage problems at school or with
friends. The seminars are designed to
give you new ways to think about your
parenting that can help you develop
strong relationships with your teenager.
• Raising Responsible Teenagers:
Tuesday, 26 August 6:30pm – 8:00pm;
• Raising Competent Teenagers:
Tuesday, 2 September 6:30pm –
8:00pm; and
• Getting Teenagers Connected:

8:00pm.
All seminars will be held at St Peters
Performing Arts Centre Theatrette.
The seminars are open to all St Peters
parents with children aged 13-17.

Head of Senior School
Last week the incoming College Captains were
announced and I would like to extend my best
wishes and congratulations to Georgia, Sophie,
Philipp and Pat on being appointed to lead the
College from Term 4 this year. I would like to
thank Mrs Lisa Delaney and Mr David Rushmore
for their leadership and guidance throughout the
selection process. The selection of captains and
prefects for the remaining leadership positions is
well underway and I wish all candidates the very
best with this.
We are rapidly approaching the mid-semester
exam period and for many students this can
be a stressful period; it would be a good time
for parents to ask their children how they are
managing their school workload and how they
are coping. If you feel that your child is struggling
or starting to worry too much about upcoming
assessment items the best thing you can do is
talk it through with your child and also start
the conversation with your child’s teacher and/
or year level coordinator. Many worries and
concerns can be easily dealt with if teachers
are consulted and it is always much better to
nip concerns in the bud than letting them build
up and then trying to manage them during
exam block. Another concern which many
Year 12 students have at this time of year is the
big question of “where to from here?”. Some
students know exactly where they want to go and
what they want to do, and some still don’t know
what they want to do - again the best thing to do
is to talk openly about the choices available and
seek help from the St Peters Careers Office.
Tomorrow night, SPOSA is hosting the inaugural
College Captains dinner in Café 45; I am sure this
will be a great event and I wish the present and
past College Captains all the best for the evening.

Junior Percussion Ensemble Performance
On 12 August in Middle School Assembly the
Junior Percussion Ensemble performed “Stomp”.
This is a piece composed by Mr Kerry Jacobson,
and is played on the MOST expensive percussion
instrument, a bucket. It is a lot fun to perform
as there are many challenging groups of notes
and you also get to play solo. At one point we
also played the back of the chairs, which made a
completely different sound.
I particularly liked when we hit the “drum” it
would reverberate all around Chapel. I think
we all love percussion ensemble because Mr J
isn’t afraid to give us challenging works. We
are looking forward to starting more keyboard
compositions. These instruments are new to
some of the group but we love a challenge.

Wet Weather
Tennis
Last Saturday saw the unfortunate cancellation of some basketball and all tennis fixtures against
St Edmund’s College. In the event of wet weather on the morning of AIC fixtures, the St Peters
Wet Weather Line will be updated at 7am with information regarding all matches. By this time,
coordinators from both schools will have assessed playing conditions and surfaces and a decision will
be made. The St Peters Wet Weather number is 3377 6211.
AFL
The AIC AFL season concluded with the Under 16 team playing in the Grand Final against Padua
College last Monday evening. Unfortunately Padua was too strong in the final to win by four goals
over a very spirited St Peters team who were down on numbers on the night. This concluded a short,
but highly successful season for St Peters teams. Congratulations boys!
Athletics
Athletics training continues each Monday and Wednesday afternoon for all students in Years 8-12.
Students meet outside Café 45 at 3:20pm. They then will be walked to their training destination.
Athletic meets begin Friday the 29th of August from 4:00pm-7:30pm and the pre-season is vitally
important for all students wishing to be a part of the team. Students are transferred to and from each
of the meets. The AIC Athletics coordinators are Mr Shaun Nodwell ([email protected])
and Mr Andrew Carey ([email protected]).
Basketball
Unfortunately Under 13 and 14 matches against St Edmund’s College were washed out last Saturday.
However, it was pleasing to see most other teams were successful in the under 15, 16 and Open age
groups. This Saturday, Round One matches will be played at Iona College. A full draw is available on
the portals and on this page. The AIC Basketball Coordinators are Mr Jeremy Lohe (j.lohe@stpeters.
qld.edu.au) and Mr Peter Dawson ([email protected]).
Tennis
Unfortunately matches against St Edmund’s were cancelled due to wet weather. Round One fixtures
take place this weekend against Iona College. The Open and under 16 fixtures will be played at Wynnum
Tennis Centre, while the under 13, 14 and 15 fixtures will be at St Peters. Please check the portals for
more information or contact AIC Tennis Coordinator, Mr Stuart Delaney ([email protected]).
