The Egyptians drew their hieroglyphics on to papyrus which is a fragile
sort of paper made from reeds. Many manuscripts were rolled up to
form a scroll. The first books were handwritten using a quill by a scribe.
Eventually wooden letters and later metal letter shapes were pressed on
to the paper. Then the concept of movable type was invented and
printing became more efficient when the steam powered printing press
and electrically driven presses were invented.
Johan Gutenberg is associated with printing.
Find his name in the dictionary and write some facts about him.
His original name was Gensfieisch. Born 1398 Died 1468. He was the
German inventor of printing by movable type.
