• Being circumcised reduces smell and makes it easier
for him to keep his penis clean.
Disease prevention
• Circumcision reduces his risk of getting HIV by 60%.
• Circumcision reduces risk of genital ulcers and other STIs.
• Circumcised babies are less likely to get urinary tract
infections.
What age can he get circumcised?
• Circumcision can be done on babies 6 weeks old.
• New Start will circumcise boys/men 12 years and older
(consent is required for under 18s).
• If your son is under 12, New Start can refer you to
another medical provider to perform the procedure.
How can I support my son to get circumcised?
Share your support.
Talk to your son about how circumcision will benefit his future.
Help him along.
Make sure you sign a consent form if he’s under 18. Assist him in
making an appointment or go with him to the nearest New Start
clinic.
Give him some TLC.
Encourage him to follow his wound care instructions and visit or
call the clinic with any concerns.
Keep him safe.
Remind him that he should not masturbate or have sex for 6
weeks after the procedure and that he should still use condoms in
future to be 100% safe.
What do I do next?
• Sign the consent form.
• Call New Start to make an appointment or for more
information, or bring your son to the nearest New Start male
circumcision clinic.
• Make sure he eats before he comes to the clinic.
• Clients that need parental consent are requested to bring their
parents’ original ID books, the clients birth certificate copy, and
in the instances where surnames of the parents and clients do
not match, parents or guardians are requested to do an affidavit.
