Montour 12 Noon ~ Altar Bread & Wine offered for the canonization of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Prayers for Peace & Tolerance This Labor Day, we draw our attention to our sisters and brothers who face twin crises—deep trials in both the world of work and the state of the family. These challenging times can pull us toward despair and all the many dangers that come with it. Into this reality, the Church shares a word of hope, directing hearts and minds to the dignity of each human person and the sanctity of work itself, which is given by God. She seeks to replace desperation and isolation with human concern and true solidarity, reaffirming the trust in a good and gracious God who knows what we need before we ask him (Mt. 6:8). - USCCB Tuesday: 1 Cor 6:1-11/Ps 149:1-6, 9/Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: 1 Cor 7:25-31/Ps 45:11-12, 14-17/Lk 6:20-26 5:00 PM ~ Altar Bread & Wine offered for the canonization of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Prayers for Peace & Tolerance Thursday: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre (Cuba) Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30/Ps 13:6/Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 Friday: Anima Christi Soul of Christ, make Me Holy. Thank you Wis 9:13-18b/Ps 90:3-6, 12-17/Phlm 9-10, 12-17/ Lk 14:25-33 "Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple." It's a modern misconception to think of Jesus as the ultimate nice guy who only said things that everybody loved to hear. Of course Jesus is the perfect model of charity and compassion, but he also gave some very challenging teachings. Today's Gospel is a case in point. Not many people are thrilled by Christ's lesson today that insists God MUST be first in our lives. Few are those who love to hear this instruction to renounce our beloved things as well as our beloved relationships. But Jesus does not mince words. We are to "hate" our "father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters," and even our own life. It's important to understand that the use of the word "hate" here does not mean to despise anyone or treat them unkindly. It means rather to prefer something-or someone--else, namely, God, to these important relationships. Taken in the context of the Gospel as a whole it is clear that Jesus is not advocating cruelty or animosity. On the contrary, just a few weeks ago we heard from Luke 10:27 as Jesus instructed us to love our neighbors as ourselves. However, in putting God first, inevitably something else must take second place. It is a kind of hatred of family, self, and "stuff" when we don't allow these things to become minigods in our lives. Instead, we keep God as God. Our Sacrificial Giving Reserve your Seat!!!!
