1 Plus One News Volume 5, Issue 2 November 2016 A 21st Century Community Learning Center Dear Plus One Parents, As the holidays approach, don’t forget that books, magazines, and educational games make wonderful presents. I still remember getting the National Geographic “World” magazine each month when I was a kid. I loved receiving my own mail! And I still have a handful of the Nancy Drew mystery books my aunt sent me each year. If you ever need suggestions for games, books or magazines that are age-appropriate for your student, just holler. I’d be happy to help! Linda Bisarek Plus One Coordinator Upcoming Holiday Book Exchange at Hillsboro Elementary There will be NO PLUS ONE on the following days: Wednesday, November 23 Thursday, November 24 (No School! Thanksgiving Break) Games with a Purpose On Monday December 12th, Hillsboro C.A.R.E.S., Plus 1, and Title I Reading will be hosting their 2nd Annual Holiday Book Exchange. Students interested in participating should bring 26 books (in fair condition) to any of the Title I Reading teachers by Wednesday, December 7. For each book brought in, students will receive a ticket to redeem at the Book Exchange. At Plus One we always try to strike a balance between learning and fun. Game nights provide us the opportunity to develop social skills. Taking turns, following rules, and winning and losing graciously are all things we work on at Plus One. Below, Kennady and Jason engage in an intense game of “Spot It!” This is a perfect opportunity for students to share the love of reading with a gift for a friend or family member. Wrapping stations manned by FFA members will help package the newfound treasures! We are also collecting donations of wrapping paper, scotch tape, and gift labels. All donations are appreciated. Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning, but also capable of succeeding. -Robert John Meehan Plus One: Where Did That Name Come From? Now that we’re well into year five of Plus One, some of you may be wondering—why is it called that? The idea of Plus One is that students go through the day and learn and grow and succeed, then after school they get another chance, a “plus one” more time, to practice and solidify what has happened during the day. We try not to do things exactly the way they were done during day school hours. The content is the same, but the approach is often unique to afterschool. Spelling with Legos, flashcards on iPads, singing our count-by’s and learning in just a little different way are all part of Plus One. The start of something cozy: Tuesday nature hikers are working to build a structure that will keep them warm during hikes this winter. Stay tuned to see how this develops. I get by with a little help from my friends! Addison has a good start at spelling her name in a unique way.
