Faithful Chronicles
By Father Frank D. Almade
Twice in the past year we have
done surveys of parishioners. The
first time was back in February, as
part of a pilot program on the spiritual life of Catholics with a national
organization, Catholic Leadership
Institute. The second time was in July
in St. Vitus Church. Both surveys
had hundreds of parishioners reply.
The July survey had many people
seeking the same things as the national on-line survey. These were mostly
centered on increasing one’s spiritual
life, understanding of the Mass and
the Bible, and growth in different
forms of prayer. The survey responders also wanted to know how to evangelize, how to defend our Catholic
faith when it is challenged, having
more information about the Catholic
church available to them, and openness to participation in parish events
and retreats.
Well, to quote Dr. Frasier Crane,
“WE’RE LISTENING!” Here are
some of the spiritual activities we
have or are planning, in response to
your survey replies:
Father Mike Ackerman is leading a
six week course on The Creed every
Tuesday in the Marian Room of
Mary, Mother of Hope Parish, from
7:00 to 9:30 PM.
The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The first of my once-a-month
Catholic education evenings is on
Thursday, October 23rd, from 7:00
to 8:00 PM. I’ll talk about The Pope
Francis Effect in the Church, in the
parish hall of St. Vincent de Paul
Parish, free and open to all.
Several parishioners are working
on bringing back Christ Renews His
Parish, a program of weekend
retreats. Look for more information
over the next several months.
We have scheduled a Ministry
Fair for Sunday, March 8, 2015, the
Third Sunday of Lent. In each of our
churches there will be displays about
all the parish ministries and organizations, as well as personal invitations
to join one. Again, look for more
information as we get closer to this
date.
The local men’s retreat group,
which recently had its third successful gathering in September, has
birthed a women’s retreat effort.
Both gatherings, for men and for
women, will be scheduled for next
September.
 Our new “portal website”
www.catholicnewcastle.org, is a great
source of information for parish
events, as well as adult Catholic learning. Visit it today.
Mr. Frank Yeropoli hosts a
Catholic Bible Study every other
Tuesday in St. John’s Maronite
Upcoming Second Collection
Next weekend, October 18-19th, the
second collection will be taken up at all
Masses for World Mission Sunday.
Please be generous to this annual diocese
-wide collection, which funds mission
work in this country and around the globe. There is an envelope in your packet for this collection, and there will be a
second passing of the baskets for this important offering.
Catholic Church, on West Reynolds
Street. The next class is Tuesday,
October 21st at 7:30 PM.
The next pre-marriage day of
reflection for engaged couples is
scheduled for Saturday, November
8th, at Mary, Mother of Hope Parish.
The following class will be scheduled
for the spring of 2015.
In response to several questions,
I’ll try to schedule a representative of
the Marriage Tribunal to come to
New Castle to answer your concerns
about the sacrament of marriage,
divorce, remarriage and annulments.
Look for the specific date in a future
bulletin.
An excellent way to learn about
your faith is to give a small amount of
time as a volunteer minister. Each
parish needs more ministers for
Sunday Mass (Lectors, Eucharistic
Ministers, Ushers, Choir members,
Servers), for educating our children
as CCD catechists, and for providing
leadership on our pastoral and
finance councils. Give me a call and
I’ll sign you up!
One of the challenges of our Catholic faith is that we are responsible to
deepen our relationship with Christ
Jesus as we get older. There are many
ways to “know about Jesus” and to
“know Jesus,” but we have to make
the effort to learn them.
Take a step today to grow in your
Catholic faith.
