indoor and outdoor environments. Qualified staff will help children
settle, make new friends and experience activities which build on
the knowledge and skills gained at home. Attendance at childcare
will prepare children for school and parents/carers will be able to get
involved in their children’s learning.
Parents/carers choosing welsh language provision for their child
can speak to the Flying Start team about welsh medium pre-school
provision. All Flying Start childcare provision is inclusive and able to cater for children with additional needs.

Health Visiting
The Flying Start Health Team consists of Health Visitors, Midwife,
Community Nursery Nurses and Speech and Language Therapist.
The Flying Start Midwife works in close partnership with the Health
Visitors and Community Nursery Nurses with the aim of improving
health outcomes for pregnant women and their unborn child.
Health Visitors help to support parents, to improve life and health
outcomes for their children, they work holistically with families to
enhance parenting skills by discussing various health topics. The
health visiting service can help with identifying as early as possible
health needs, mental health issues and any developmental delay in
children.
The Community Nursery Nurses provide support for children, at
home or in group settings. This may include supporting children to
achieve milestones such as toilet training, weaning and language and
communication skills.
The Flying Start Speech and Language Therapist assesses children with
identified speech and language delay and provides a comprehensive
care programme to improve speech and language development.

Parenting
Flying Start is all about providing support for the whole family; mums,
dads and carers – as well as the extended family.
Looking after young children can be very challenging and no one has
all the answers. Parenting programmes can support parents/carers in
their role and may include topics such as:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Promoting positive parenting;
Coping with/managing children’s behaviour;
Developing routines;
Potty training;
Sleeping problems;
Other common parenting issues.
As well as the group sessions, parents/carers are welcome to talk to
Flying Start staff on a one to one basis in order to discuss any respect
of parenting. This can be arranged as part of a community group or
families own home.

Early Language Development
Language and Play (LAP) is a short programme for parents and carers
who have children aged 0 to 3 years. The LAP programme aims to share
ideas and activities over six sessions that will make a real difference to
both children and parents/carers.
Transition Workers
The Transition Workers will listen and provide support, this support may
include going along with families to appointments or initial meetings,
assisting with the completion of forms or generally offering to help the
families with day to day life, at a time when they need it most.
Many things can be obstacles to accessing services including, lack of
confidence, literacy, or worries about housing, relationships or money.
Preventative family support can prevent families getting into a crisis
situation and assist with issues such as accessing support for housing,
benefits, grant aid and other issues which may affect the family and
limit their ability to attend the Flying Start Programme.
