Therapy Volunteer Role Profile Queen Elizabeth House and Monument House Role This includes spending time with patients, to encourage mobility and independence. Supporting patients with physical therapy exercises and at meal times. Age Requirement You are required to be 16+ for this role Hours 7 days a week ??? Morning shift 8am / 8.30am – 12.30 Afternoon shift 12 noon – 4pm – 4.30pm We would ask for a regular commitment of 3- 4 hours per week on a set day this could be on a morning or afternoon. However, if you are able to commit more time that would be warmly welcomed. Summary of the Role This service allows us to provide friendship and support to patients in the ward environment. All our patients are cared for with respect and dignity. Volunteers provide services which contribute towards holistic patient care and add to the overall quality of service provided to patients. Volunteers complement paid staff they do not supplement them. To support patients to complete physiotherapy and exercise programs,1:1 or in groups, under supervision and guidance of qualified staff. This volunteering opportunity will greatly enhance your experience in life, being involved in your community and creating and sustaining new friendships in a caring supportive environment. Tasks To make and serve beverages for patients as advised by staff. Set and prepare tables for meal times. To sit and chat with patients. Put away fresh linen in amounts the individual can manage. Volunteers may not have access to dirty linen. To help make unoccupied beds. Encourage patients social activity such as draughts, dominoes, singing, chatting etc Read to patients. Help patients with letter writing. Volunteers may help with patient’s nutrition and hydration needs at staff’s discretion and on completion of the one day nutrition and hydration course. Support patients to access the dining area either assisting walking or in wheelchairs Encourage patients to complete the Friends and Family test feedback, being aware of the alternative formats as required i.e. large print, easy read, language line, website options. Page 1 of 2 Encourage patients and visitors to take action to prevention infection e.g. hand hygiene Training As per volunteer policy, all volunteers must complete Trust mandatory training. For this role the specific training is: Physical therapy awareness Nutrition and hydration Food safety Wheelchair training Skills and Abilities Excellent listening and communication skills Be well motivated with a positive attitude towards encouraging others Patience An interest in people Excellent time keeping skills Understanding of confidentiality Calm and patient manner Reliable with a good sense of humour Previous experience in organising social activities would be an advantage. Dress Code As per dress code policy and bare below the elbow policy. ID badge and volunteer tabard or polo shirt must be worn at all times to clearly define role of volunteer for patients.
