The Public Prosecution office made the call in relation to the actors who had illegally taken five Timorese to be employed in Malaysia in 2013. RTL [Public Radio] reported that three human trafficking victims had returned home, whereas the other two had lost contact with their families. He added that all the Timorese citizens had the responsibility to ensure security in the electoral process, so that the people could remain calm to vote. *Video calling for “vote with peace” goes viral *Independente, June 16, 2017 A You Tube video calling for Timorese people to “vote with peace” in July’s parliamentary election has attracted thousands of followers, with many supporters saying the message was critical to stability of their country. The video released Monday by non-profit organization Ba Futuro – meaning in Tetun “for the future” – came after a week of violent clashes between opposition political party supporters. In the opening scenes showing images of youth throwing rocks at one another the video asks: “…if political parties cannot control their own members will they be able to govern the country if elected?” “In reality differences in political opinion should not mean that our communities are threatened with destruction,” Lito Da Costa, a local singer and peace activist said in the video. The warning, released by global food and agricultural policy experts Jessica Fanzo and Rebecca Mclaren on Friday, highlighted Timor-Leste as a country that “illustrates the problem tragically well.” In Timor-Leste over half of children are rated as stunted, while 38 percent are underweight and 11 percent are wasted – “measures of still more acute under nutrition,” according to the World Health Organization. “To solve the problem, these countries need to improve their food systems, to see that everyone is able to procure sufficient meat, eggs, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, tubers, peas, beans, and grains,” the pair said. “Too often, instead, leaders look for salvation from just one food – a food that can be healthy enough, if it is balanced by other things in the diet, but that can’t, on its own, prevent stunting. Former President Jose Ramos Horta say the Government has “started from scratch” to rebuild a broken education system. Education is highly valued in Timor-Leste. Horta says enrolment is at around 90 per cent. But inside classrooms he warns that many teachers are untrained and unpaid. An estimated 75 percent of teachers came from Indonesia during occupation – and returned there before independence. Volunteers stepped in to fill the gap. Many are still there, and as their student body grows, so does the demand for better quality education.
