Sociogram
A sociogram is a graphic representation of the social links that characters have in a short
story or novel. Not only does a sociogram provide you with information about the central
characters, through symbols, but they also provide you with information about the main
interactions and relationships between characters. Sociograms use symbols to represent
characters and explain connections between characters.
To create a sociogram, consider the following steps:
1) List the central characters and highlight the main character
2) Brainstorm traits for each character and write the corresponding page numbers
(approximately 4-6)
Examples of questions to consider:
- How does the character act towards others?
- What does the character believe about himself/herself and about
others?
- Are there any quotes that depict or represent the character?
3) What symbol best represents the character’s traits and WHY?
4) How do the characters relate to each other?
Examples of questions to consider:
- Are they friends? enemies?
- Do they go through similar experiences?
5) What symbol best represents their relationship and/or connection to each other?
