Pupil Free Day
Dear Families,
Here we are one quarter of the way through a school year – this is week 10 out of
40 weeks! I hope that families are gearing up for fun, happy and safe school
holidays. Please don’t forget that on the last day of school we finish at 2:05pm.
For the first three weeks of term 2 I have been nominated to step into the role of
Education Director. Jo Sayers will be the Principal of this site during my absence
and we will be backfilling her deputy’s role during that time. As Education Director
I am still responsible for Settlers, as well as numerous other sites, so Jo and I will
be in close communication during this time.
Although quiet, the car boot sale on Sunday was a success. Thank you to all of
the staff who supported the day either through donations or working on stalls.
Thank you to the community members who came through on the day. It was
perfect weather. Next term’s fundraising event is the disco. The governing council
has decided this year’s fundraising will further improve the grounds.
Hopefully over this week and next, families have had, or made a time to have,
interviews with teachers. I highly recommend that students attend the interviews
with you and talk about their own learning. This is an opportunity for sharing how
your child is travelling in their learning and it is also a time for common
understandings (student, teacher and parent) on the ‘where to’ from here. Staff
have been building student’s understanding of the intention of lessons and the
success criteria so that students can set their own personal learning goals.
Taking control of their learning is a vital component of being lifelong learners and
being prepared for all of their future options. If you have not yet made a time for
an interview or missed the one you had booked, then please speak with the
teachers individually to reschedule.

At this time of the year the transition process for students moving from year 7 to
year 8 begins. Year 7 students will bring home their forms in week 1 of Term 2. Starting Secondary School
(‘transition’) packs are distributed to all Year 7 students. These materials are intended to help students and their
parents understand enrolment procedures in order to correctly complete their ED176 form and/or apply for special
interest programs. Parents of these students must complete the form and supply any relevant documentation to
the school by Friday 26 May 2017. Parents can access enrolment information at www.sa.gov.au, which provides
key information about the Year 7/8 Transition process. To access this information please select ‘Enrolling in High
School’ by using the search function. Maureen (Senior Leader) or your child’s class teacher can also support you
through this process.
At the beginning of each term we put a term planner out with the first newsletter of the term. At the beginning of
this year the assemblies may not have been organised in time for when this term’s planner was published. Term
2’s planner will therefore be published in week 2 of the term. For forward planning I have included the dates and
times of the Term 2 assemblies (all in the hall) here:
K-2 Assemblies – Week 2 Thursday 11th May, Week 4 Tuesday 23rd May, Week 6 Thursday 8th June and Week 8
Tuesday 27th June – please note that these assemblies alternate between Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15am.
They alternate so that the two Kindy groups have an opportunity to attend at least 2 assemblies a term.
Year 3-5 Assemblies – Week 3 Thursday 18th May, Week 6 Thursday 8th June and Week 9 Thursday 29th June –
all assemblies are held at 2:15pm.
Year 6-7 Assemblies – Week 5 Friday 2nd June and Week 8 Friday 23rd June at 2:30pm. A Cyber safety session
has been organised for year 6/7 students on Friday of week 1 in the hall.
All of our Pupil Free days and School Closure have now been endorsed by Governing Council. Some further dates
to be aware of include: Tuesday 13th June, Monday 4th September and Monday 16th October are the remaining
Pupil Free Days for this year. A School Closure is planned for Wednesday 29 th November, after the Summer
Celebration on Tuesday 28th November. We will also be celebrating 30 years as a school in the afternoon of the
Summer Celebration – more information about this will be coming out closer to the date. Graduation for our year 7s
this year will be on Thursday 14th December. We are booked into Waterworld as a whole school excursion in term
4 with the date to be confirmed.
Kind regards, Tanya

During Week 7 (March 2017) E01, E03, E04,
G02 & G03 went to West Lakes Aquatics Centre.
On the 15th of March, E03 and E01 went to
West Lakes Aquatic Centre. We left school
at 8:30 sharp and we arrived at roughly
9:00.
We went through a safety talk led by one of
the instructors and were placed into 8
diverse groups, 2 for each activity.
There were 4 activities, sailing, snorkeling,
surfing and kayaking. Group 8 and 7 did
kayaking first, group 6 and 5 did sailing, 4
and 3 did surfing and group 1 and 2 did
snorkeling.
Overall the day was a lot of fun for all 8
groups!
But sadly we had to leave West lakes at
around 4:00 but we get to go to West lakes
again next year!

On Friday 17th March, the year 7 students from G02 and G03 went to Aquatics at the
Westlake's Aquatic Centre. The most important thing that we learned on that day was
the safety rules relating to activities on the beach and the lake.
Some of the really exciting things were snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and surfing.
At kayaking the exciting skill that we learnt was how to make a raft, how to protect
yourself in an emergency and how to do 360 degree rotations in the water.
We snorkeled in the lake and saw many fish. We surfed on the beautiful Tennyson
Beach. Some of the students in our group managed to catch a wave for a few seconds.
When we did sailing we all got to learn about the parts of the sailing boat and we also
got to steer the boat. At the end of the session, we did man over board. What an
amazing day!!! Written by Mathew G02

In week 7, the year 6 and 7 classes participated in numerous activities at the West Lakes
Shore Aquatics Centre. The activities we participated in were surfing, sailing, snorkeling
and kayaking. Before every activity, our instructors taught us about the equipment we
were using and how to use it safely. They also explained to us what to do in an emergency,
but luckily, it didn't occur. We also learnt a number of safety tips to do with water
activities that we could use in future. I'm sure everyone had a great active day.

West Lakes Aquatics
On the 18th of March we
went to the West Lakes
Aquatic centre. We learnt a
lot of things including
kayaking, canoeing, Boogie
boarding and sailing. The
most valuable thing we did
was learn about water
safety, in water safety we
learnt about how to call for
help and what to do in an
emergency. We also talked
about three words STAY
WETT HELP. Starting with
STAY, it stands for stay
with your equipment and
keep calm. Secondly was
WETT, It stands for
Weather, Equipment, Tell
someone and Take a buddy.
Finally we have HELP,
HELP stands for Hazards,
Entry and Exit, Landmarks
and Plan. P.S our personal
favorites were Boogie
Boarding and kayaking

Parenting after Divorce and Separation
Separation and divorce can be a stressful and challenging time for parents and children. It can put
children at risk of emotional and behavioural problems, poor academic achievement, and ongoing
relationship problems. Parents may also experience increased depression, anxiety and stress.
It is important that families have access to evidence-based preventative interventions. Researchers at
the University of South Australia and The University of Queensland are developing an online
intervention to support parents during this transition. They are encouraging parents to have an input
into what is important to go in the program and what their needs are. Interested parents can learn
