Settings for Acta theses
First define page settings and numbering.
Windows
Page/paper size B5, or custom width 14.8 cm, height 25.0 cm. Different even and
odd pages. Margins: top, left and right 2 cm, bottom 3 cm. Gutter 0.5 cm. Header
1.25 cm from the edge of the page, footer 1.85 cm from the edge of the page.
Mac
Page/paper size B5, or custom width 14.8 cm, height 25.0 cm. Different even and
odd pages. Margins: top 2 cm, left 2 cm, right 2.5 cm, bottom 3 cm. Header 1.25 cm
from the edge of the page, footer 1.85 cm from the edge of the page.
Begin page numbering at 3 (pages 1 and 2 will be created by the library but must be
taken into account in page numbering). Place the page numbers at the bottom of the
page, on the right for odd pages and on the left for even pages.
The start of the text includes unnumbered pages, usually the dedication, abstract,
summary, and table of contents. The actual text should begin on an odd-numbered
page (right-hand page). Include an extra blank page before the actual text if needed.
Create styles according to the following settings.

Downloading the styles used in the Acta template
If you wish to use the style definitions used in the Acta template in Microsoft Word
2013, you can download the styles as follows: First download and save the Acta
template onto your computer.
(http://www.uta.fi/kirjasto/tup/mallipohja.html).
In Word’s Developer tab, choose Load template. Paste the Acta template you
downloaded into your file (see the figures on pages 7–9).
Check the text one paragraph at a time and choose the appropriate styles from the
style menu on the right.

Figures, images and tables
The width of figures and images must conform to the width of the book’s text
paragraphs, which is 13 cm. The book will be printed primarily in black and white,
so please make sure that the colours used in any figures or images you include are
distinct enough for black and white printing. Pages printed in colour are charged
separately.
Create figures/tables in separate files (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) before adding them
to the template. For texts included in figures, choose the font Arial Narrow and use a
maximum font size of 10 pt. Any lines and arrows included in figures/tables should
be black unless they are to be printed in colour.
Once your figure or table is ready, copy and paste it into the template.
Word accepts a number of different file formats, but the file formats recommended
for publications include .tiff and .jpeg. When using the jpeg format, make sure that
you choose a low enough compression rate when saving the image. Excessive jpeg
compression will deteriorate the image quality of the image. Make sure to use a high
enough resolution for images!

PLEASE NOTE! Images that use screen resolutions (images published on websites)
(72 dpi) are not suitable for printing.

Creating a bibliography
The publisher recommends using the established Finnish style of marking references.
This style largely follows the international Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association, or APA style. This recommendation should be followed if
your branch of science does not have its own established conventions.
The bibliography should be organised by the last name of the author and year of
publication – oldest first.
If the bibliography also includes monographs and joint publications from the same
author, the monographs should be listed first, followed by publications with 2 authors,
followed by those with 3 authors etc., by last names and year of publication.
Be sure to choose a single style for the bibliography and use it consistently. You
can also make use of the RefWorks reference software. A bibliography created using
RefWorks is always consistent.
If you do use the RefWorks reference software, carefully check any references and the
bibliography before delivering the PDF file to the library.
