WOVEN
TEXTILE ART
Ptolemy Mann has been hand dyeing and weaving oneoff wall based artworks from her studio since 1997. Suitable
for domestic, corporate or public spaces these artworks
are available to buy from various galleries and exhibitions
and directly from her website. You may find a piece she
has already made that suits your space perfectly but
commissioning a bespoke artwork is also an easy
and straightforward process.
Artworks can be made to almost any dimensions required
and all pieces are hand stretched over wooden frames making
them easy to install. If you have a problem with acoustics
and require additional sound absorbing material, this can
be hidden behind the framed artwork. Textile panels are an
excellent way to reduce echoing in a space that has a lot of
glass and hard surfaces; this makes them not only beautiful
but functional too.
Commissioning begins with a site visit if possible and an
informal discussion with you about what you require, what
your budget is and when you need it by. This is followed
by a design process usually resulting in a series of sketches
and possible options for your artwork.
If you would like to discuss a commission
or buy some of Ptolemy’s art please
contact the studio:
Once the design is agreed and a deposit has been paid
the commission will be started and delivered on a designated
day. Studio visits can be arranged during the making process
if desired.
The actual dyeing and weaving process is complex; various
fibres are hand dyed using a dip-dyed technique and then
hand woven on an upright ‘Dobby’ loom (described by a series
of process shots, above). The resulting cloth is then stretched
over frames of various depths; large or small scale as linked
or independent panels. Ptolemy has also created floor based,
free-standing monolithic pieces of a more sculptural nature.
Clients include: Hilton Hotel group, GlaxoSmithKline,
The Open University, Cunard, KPMG, Land Securities,
Sunlife of Canada, NHS, Norwegian Cruise, Hampshire
County Council, Savills and numerous private clients
“The singing stripe of her precise but subtle textile
pieces confirm her as a powerful and pleasing
colourfield artist whose medium just happens
to be the supremely disciplined one of weaving.
It is a rare and thrilling conjunction.”
