Early Stages was specifically created in 1989 to offer the experience of live professional theatre
to economically and culturally deprived students from inner city schools at the Florida Theatre
and in their schools. In 1991, the program served 3,000 students in seven small schools.
Last year, Early Stages served 30,000 students from over 60 schools, with programs for grades
PK-12. Funding for the Early Stages program is provided by generous grants from:

Southern Christian Leadership Conference to work for
full equality for African Americans.
-Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on a bus to a
white person begins the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
-Martin Luther King delivers his “How Long, Not
Long” speech on the steps of the steps of the Alabama
State Capitol at the conclusion of the march from
Selma.
-Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated in Memphis,
Tennessee.
-Martin Luther King, Jr. Writes his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”. In it he argues his case for nonviolence and the moral responsibility of people to break
unjust laws rather than wait forever for justice to be
addressed by entrenched courts.
-The U.S. Supreme court upholds Browder v. Gayle
that ruled that the segregation of buses in Montgomery
Alabama was unconstitutional.
