As this is the 10th anniversary of our current academic building, and as we are in the midst of unprecedented modern-day growth, it is appropriate for this issue of the Journal to reflect on our past and take a look to our future. This past August 19th, we welcomed 162 freshmen to our campus, the largest class since the early 70s. Our total student body now numbers 571. Covington Catholic is thriving and has experienced a 17% enrollment increase in the past four years. ACT scores continue to rise, soaring well above state and national averages, and the community service program reaches out into the Northern Kentucky community daily to help others. All of these incredible achievements are a culmination of our stakeholders’ efforts which have propelled our school into this successful realm. I personally want to express my gratitude to a few people who are at the forefront in allowing us to reach these new heights and had the vision to realize the potential which existed. Foremost, I want to thank the Most Reverend Roger J. Foys who approved the creation of the academic building. To this day, he continues to support us as we strive to prepare young men for their futures. Next are both of my predecessors. Mr. Jack Kennevan is responsible for driving the last capital campaign and fulfilling the dream of a state-of-the-art academic facility. Mr. Kennevan kept the faith throughout the long and arduous process. Mr. Michael Clines was responsible for helping the students, teachers and staff transition into the building while maintaining a smooth operation even while construction was being completed. He also accelerated the academic expectations and saw Covington Catholic recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence during his tenure. I want to recognize our teachers and staff who are the backbone of this wonderful school. They are responsible for the everyday operations that guide our students in their growth to become good fathers, responsible citizens and meaningful contributors to our society. Recent property purchases have expanded our campus an additional seven acres allowing for future growth and preventing us from becoming landlocked. The addition of the church and its property was made possible through the generosity of the Dennis Griffin family. We are blessed to have had many benefactors through the years, too numerous to mention. They have supported our vision and have seen it through to fruition. While we have accomplished so much, we do not feel our work is done. At Covington Catholic, we continue to be progressive and aggressive in improving our Catholic identity and curriculum while providing facilities to meet the needs of our students. It is indeed my privilege to work at such a strong, faith-based institution. We are extremely blessed to enjoy the amenities of our current facilities that God has bestowed on us and take nothing for granted. We ask God’s blessings on our endeavors now as we begin a new school year and ask Him to continue to look favorably upon us on into the future. Covington Catholic Journal 1 Feature StorY A Dream Realized: 10th Anniversary of new Academic Center Jack Kennevan had only been principal for about two weeks when George Schneider, then CCH property manager, asked to show him something. Jack recalls George opened a cabinet, grabbed a roll of papers and unfurled them on the desk. George then said, “Jack, this is my dream for Covington This school year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the new academic center at 1600 Dixie Highway. Remarkably, the school was built in a relatively tight space behind the existing building on Dixie and in front of the baseball field. Stories abound regarding the efforts to get this project off Groundbreaking with Jack Kaelin, Dan Tieman ‘58 , Gerry Thelen ‘57, The Most Rev. Bishop Foys, Wayne Carlisle, George Schneider and Jack Kennevan. Catholic.” Those papers were blueprints for a new school. School administrators had been trying to get permission for years to pursue a feasibility study, but for various reasons could not proceed. “George kept the dream alive,” said Kennevan, “He is one of the unsung heroes.” continued on page 3 2 Covington Catholic Journal the ground, the challenges of construction and finally moving in. Having retired from the Cincinnati Public Schools after thirty years, Jack Kennevan certainly was ready to take the helm as principal of CovCath, but no one had mentioned anything about a building project on the horizon during the interview process. Then the conversation with George occurred and as Jack says, “George prodded, goaded and pushed me into doing this project.” A new building was needed for numerous reasons: technology upgrades, more classrooms and handicapped accessibility. Once the Most Rev. Robert W. Muench gave permission to proceed with the project, Gerry Thelen ‘57 and Wayne Carlisle accepted the role of chairmen for the Share the Spirit campaign to raise $7.5 million. For Mr. Kennevan, Gerry and Wayne were instrumental to the campaign’s success and the building’s completion. Wayne, the owner of Carlisle Construction, brought years of experience in the construction business to the project. “Wayne not only made a generous donation to the campaign, he also provided a full-time, onsite project manager.” Gerry Thelen brought a different expertise to the campaign. “Gerry was the marketing guy. He went with me to every prospective donor meeting. He also made a generous financial contribution too.” While visiting prospective donors, Mr. Kennevan claims he put 8,000 miles on his car. The fundraising kept Jack awake some nights. “There was one night, toward the end, when I awakened at 3:00 AM wondering where the rest of the money would come from. The next day when I arrived at school, there was a check on my desk for $100,000 from Marge Schott. Later that day, the Boosters pledged $900,000. We had our money!” “There were countless other people who hosted meetings and gave of their time to this project. They were so generous and so loving,” recalls Kennevan. Among other unsung heroes are Mike and Fran Hemmer and Fred McCoy. Mike, who owned a Feature StorY An inauspicious start. construction business, provided ongoing review of the project. His wife, Fran, held an auction to raise $11,000 so the school seal could be inlaid in the lobby floor. McCoy owned a flooring business and oversaw the installation of the terrazzo. The construction created a lively, learning environment from 2002-2003. “It was incredibly noisy and dirty,” remarked Al Hertsenberg, religion teacher. “The old building was not air conditioned, so when it was warm, the windows were open. There was a lot of heavy machinery. The sound and dirt came right in.” Bill Balskus, social studies teacher added, “The colorful language of workers came in too.” And then there was the rain. It rained and rained and rained some more pushing back the completion date farther and farther. The rain was followed by the mud. Diane Kohlhepp of the Main Office staff remembers teachers and students sloshing their way through mud to get from the parking lot to the doors of the school. The 2002-03 school year ended on May 23. The faculty and staff were told they had three days to vacate the old building so it could be razed for the new parking lot. “We were literally throwing things out of the window into dumpsters below,” said Maureen Dugan Osterhaus. As the projection neared completion, Mr. Kennevan decided it was time to leave the new school in new hands. Michael Clines, who had been at Covington Catholic for ten years serving as both a teacher and guidance counselor, was named new principal. When Mr. Kennevan was asked why he didn’t want to enjoy the fruits of his labor by serving as principal in the new building, he responded, “I’m Moses. I led you to the Promised Land, now I’m leaving you with the bill.” Mr. Clines was responsible for the transition to the new building. “I would characterize it as a time of sacrifice and compromise, and Mike did a great job seeing it all to completion,” said Kennevan. As the 2003-04 school year approached, construction was not on schedule. The spring rains had taken their toll. The first floor classrooms could accommodate students, but the rest of the building was unfinished. In a letter dated August 3, 2003, Mr. Clines explained to parents what to expect at the start of the school year: “Covington Catholic High School will begin its school year on September 15th. We will utilize 13 ‘traditional’ classrooms on the first floor, 4 in the cafeteria, and 6 in the gym. The second floor is scheduled to open October 15th and the third is scheduled for October 30th. Once the second floor opens, we will no longer use the cafeteria or gym for classrooms.” Everything was set, but then the gym failed inspection. No classes could be held there until it was cleared. It was then Mr. Clines walked over to Kentucky Elite gymnastics and asked if he could use their facilities to hold classes. He made the same request of the pastor at the Church of the Nazarene. However, mud continued to be a problem. As students moved around the property, mud got tracked into buildings. Work study students were sent daily to clean the church. Once the gym was ready, classes were moved there from neighboring facilities. “We rented heavy theater curtains to partition off the gym,” said Clines. “I don’t think the boys’ education suffered. I believe they got even more of an education being a part of this experience.” Don Buchanan was in his thirty-sixth year of teaching at the time. He told Mr. Clines that teaching in the gym was the toughest assignment he had ever been given. As classrooms were completed in the building, teachers moved from the cafeteria and gym into their new rooms. Finally, everything was completed and on December 7, 2003, the new building was dedicated. The Most Rev. Roger J. Foys blessed the building and classrooms. Campaign co-chair, Gerry Thelen shared, “I felt a lot of pride and thought of the many future young men who will enjoy these facilities including my seven grandsons. I am honored to have been a part of this endeavor.” So far, two of Gerry’s grandsons have benefitted from the work of their grandfather, Burke DeFraites ’09 and Jake Thelen ’11. The efforts of the campaign committee, faculty and staff, parents, alumni and the many donors were an investment in the future of Covington Catholic. It was well worth it as Covington Catholic continues to improve year after year. Enrollment has grown 17% over the past four years; standardized test scores have risen, and the commitment to providing a strong Catholic foundation has not wavered. As the school looks to the next ten years, it is with a strong resolve to continue to provide the best possible Catholic education to the young men of Northern Kentucky. If you have a memorable story from the construction of either of the Dixie Highway school buildings, please email them to [email protected] or contact Maureen Regan at (859) 448-2253. We would like to share these stories in future issues of the Journal. When I took the position of Advanement Director in October of 2004, the endowment was $635,000. To date, we are at $1,818,760! The catalyst for this growth occurred in 2006 when I met Mr. Dennis Doyle. Mr. Doyle wanted to establish a scholarship for his friend and CCH alumnus, Mr. Tim Shields ’61. Mr. Doyle had been very active with Catholic high schools in Cincinnati, but it was Tim’s passion for Covington Catholic that made Mr. Doyle come to Kentucky with his philanthropy. Since then, Mr. Doyle has been instrumental in adding nine new scholarships with generous matching gifts of his own. The progress of the endowment has created interest amongst the Colonel Community and new scholarships have been added since. Recently a dear friend of CCH passed away. Mr. Nick Seligman’s death prompted his family and friends to establish a scholarship in his honor. Nick was a Dixie High School graduate, but his love for Covington Catholic was immense. Every Thursday, he would arrive early to the gym to ensure Bingo was ready to go. He worked the concession stand for every home football and basketball game and continued to volunteer long after his son Jason ’96 graduated. CCH became a part of his family, and he became part of ours. Another recent scholarship established was in honor of loving parents, Bob and Mary Evelyn Hebbeler. Their sons Bob, Mike ’71 and Gary ’79 wanted to honor their mother and father. Mary Evelyn passed away this year at the age of 95, and Bob died in 2006. Bob Hebbeler was instrumental in starting the CCH basketball program in 1944 and in 1946 became the school’s first baseball coach. Bob remained active at CCH through the years and is a member of the Covington Catholic Hall of Fame. Bob and Mary Evelyn wanted their sons to have a Catholic education and worked long hours to make that happen. Today, their sons are proud of their education and are thankful to their parents for giving them the opportunity. These are just two examples of great people whose memories will live on through scholarships for the young men of Covington Catholic. Continued growth of the endowment will serve students with tuition aid for years to come. Please help us continue to provide a Covington Catholic education through the endowment by establishing a scholarship. If you would like more information about the endowment program or have a question, please contact me at [email protected] or 859-448-2247 ext. 1. He devoted countless hours of service to the Booster Club and Athletic Department serving as a member of the Booster Executive Board and as Booster President. Mr. Seligman worked concessions for all football and basketball games and worked Bingo weekly for twenty-eight years. In 2002, Mr. Seligman was inducted into the Covington Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame. On that night, Jack Kennevan, then school principal, awarded Seligman an honorary Covington Catholic diploma. Although he did not graduate from Covington Catholic, he was a true Colonel. His son, Jason, graduated from Covington Catholic in 1996 and his grandson, Max, is a current student. Just days before he succumbed to cancer, Mike Guidugli, Bob Rowe and two former principals, Michael Clines and Jack Kennevan, visited Mr. Seligman. During this visit, they shared with Nick that a scholarship had been established in his name. Surrounded by his family, Mr. Seligman was overwhelmed with emotion and incredibly humbled by the honor. Covington Catholic Journal 19 From the Alumni Director Richard Dickmann ’80 For everything in life, there is a foundation on which the product is supported. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the new school building on the campus of Covington Catholic. While it is the third such building to provide a place to educate our young men, it is the same strong educational foundation on which the mission of Covington Catholic continues to prosper. The tradition of excellence at Covington Catholic has been supported in many ways by its alumni and the Colonel Community at large. The school’s strong leadership has continued to provide a great product which includes spiritual values, high academic standards, an incredible social experience that molds the brotherhood, and nurturing guidance that develops our men physically through clubs and sanctioned sports. The result is a Catholic education that cannot be matched in Northern Kentucky. As members of the Colonel Community, our alumni can be proud of the successes that have been and continue to be achieved here at Covington Catholic High School. This fall, we are excited that many of our alumni have chosen to come back to campus and reconnect to the school. A record number of reunions have been organized to commemorate graduations and enjoy the company of the brotherhood once again. Our alumni’s enthusiasm is contagious, and I believe has raised the bar to new heights for alumni participation. As alumni, we are proud our alma mater has been able to prosper into an institution that has seen unparalleled growth over the past five years. There for a while, the school seemed somewhat of a sleeping giant, however this sleeping giant has awakened and the outlook for the future is very bright. From Colonel Socials to Colonel Business Connections and golf outings to Sports Fest, our alumni have taken ownership in the future of Covington Catholic and have begun to advance the school through participation. Participation is the key to prosperity in any organization. Thank you, alumni, for working bingo, landscaping the campus, providing leadership on committees, hiring and doing business with fellow alumni, supporting the school financially and for contributing in many ways. Congratulations Covington Catholic on the 10th anniversary of the new academic center, and congratulations to the best alumni in Northern Kentucky. You continue to provide leadership and a strong foundation for a bright future for the young men of Covington Catholic.
