POSITIVE/NEGATIVE DESIGN
WHAT TO EXPECT?
• Students will create an alternating and repetitive
design using two original designs. Design uses
positive and negative shape. Contrast with
bottom layer shows details. Paper is
curled/raised for relief in alternating pattern.
RELIEF SCULPTURE
• Relief is a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements
remain attached to a solid background of the same material.

YOU WILL CREATE AN ALTERNATING PATTERN USING
CUT PAPER DESIGNS IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A UNIQUE
COMPOSITION
TODAY: YOU WILL PRACTICE VARIOUS EXAMPLES
OF CUTTING AND PAPER FOLDING TECHNIQUES
You will copy this handout onto a sheet of paper and practice cutting and folding
the various designs. Then, you will come up with at least 6 new examples on
your own. Solid lines will be cut, dotted lines will be folded
DIVIDE YOUR PAPER INTO 2 INCH SQUARES FOR PRACTICE
(FOR YOUR FINAL,YOU WILL PUT A HALF INCH SPACE IN
BETWEEN EACH SQUARE.
