Year 3 Summer Term Topic Letter
Dear Parents,
We hope you enjoyed the Spring break and that the children have enjoyed their first week back at
school. As you know, during the first part of this term we will be learning all about World War 2,
with the main focus being on what it was like to be an evacuee in the 1940s. We will be basing our
work around the book ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo and a breakdown of the whole learning
focus for the Summer Term is detailed below for your information and reference:
Evacuees
English
We will be using the book ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo as a basis of most of our English
work. Through this story the children will gain deeper understanding of the character’s feelings
and a greater insight of what it would have been like to be an evacuee during World War 2. We
will be writing descriptive poems using emotive language, creating stories linked to an evacuee
experience. Throughout extended writing activities, we will be continuing to get the children to
up-level their writing using VCOP (descriptive vocabulary, connectives, interesting sentence
openers and variety punctuation marks).

Maths
We will be continuing to build on the children’s existing knowledge in all areas of Maths. To start
with we will develop their knowledge of measurement, through using different units of
measurement, encouraging the children to make estimates and read scales. We will also be naming
and exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes such as lines of symmetry, number of sides/
faces and recognising whether the shape contains a right angle. Throughout the term we will
continue to develop written methods for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division) and develop confidence when identifying which strategy to use in word problems.
