Year 5 Terms 3 and 4 Curriculum Outline Welcome to our Curriculum Outline for the coming two terms. English Maths Term 3 – The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. The children will be studying how the poet uses figurative language in the poem and the impact it has on the reader. The children will be writing their own verses in the style of The Highwayman as well as descriptions about the main characters. Term 3 will conclude with the children using features of persuasion to write formal letters. Term 4 – The children will be studying film narrative with silent films. They will be looking at the way different filming techniques are used and how this can impact the audience. They will then use their understanding of how films are portrayed to create stories. Term 3 Term 4 Fractions: Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other. Co-ordinates Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation. Shape Identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and cuboids, from 2-D representations. Decimal place value Round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. Percentages Finding percentages of amounts. Measures Convert between different units of measure (e.g. kilometre and metre; metre and centimetre; centimetre and millimetre; kilogram and gram; litre and millilitre). Timetables Recap time problems with timelines. Ordering time amounts. Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables. Negative numbers Interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers through zero. Science In Term 3, the children will be studying Earth, Sun and Moon. We will be looking at our Solar System and how day and night occur. In Term 4, the children will be studying forces with a particular focus on gravity. Computing In Term 3, the children will be learning about E-Safety. In term 4 and 5, we will be combining the Computing and D&T and they will be using ‘Lego Wedo’ to develop their programming skills. French Term 3 is clothing. Term 4 is fruit and healthy eating. RE Days Term 3 – Thursday 26th January Term 3 – Festivals of Light. We will be looking at festivals that religions celebrate. Term 4 – Friday 17th March Term 4 is Inspirational People. We will be studying how individuals with strong religious beliefs have had an impact on the world around them. PSHCE Term 3 is Going for Goals. Term 4 is Good to be Me. Geography Terms 3 and 4 The children will be studying weather. We will be collecting data to do with weather and linking this to Brazil, London and Tonbridge. We will also be studying Brazil and their culture. Music In term 3 we will be studying the origin of Samba music and composing our responses using class and own instruments. In term 4 there will be a further introduction to song writing and continuing to revise Samba music with a more focussed study of Carnival music. DT During Term 3, the children will be studying the seasonality of food. This will result in the classes making a healthy soup towards the end of term. Art During Term 4, the children will be creating a mask that fits a design brief. PE Term 3- The topic will be basketball. We will be looking at the basic rules of the game and attacking and defending skills. Term 4- The topic will be cricket. We will be looking at the basic rules of the game and developing strategies to field the ball. Forthcoming Events and Dates Term 3 6th February – trip to the Royal Observatory. Term 4
