Vet Wellness Brochure front April 2011

Wellness Screening is an exam performed by a veterinary technician
and will include a thorough examination of the pet to ensure it is
healthy enough for vaccinations. The screening will consist of the
following: Overall look at the pet focusing on eyes, ears, lymph nodes,
hair coat and skin. The technician will also listen to the heart and
lungs. Any abnormalities observed during this screening will be
reported to the veterinarian for further diagnosis.
Wellness Exam is an exam performed by a veterinarian and will
include, in addition to the services provided during the wellness
screening, palpation of abdominal organs, eye exam
w/ophthalmoscope to visualize the entire eye, ear exam with
otoscope, rectal exam to include prostate evaluation, and evaluation
of abnormal heart or lung sounds. Any abnormal findings will be
examined in depth. Findings will be discussed and information will
be provided regarding disease progression, treatment options and
prognosis for recovery.
Vaccinations
Rabies is a fatal viral infection spread by infected animals through
the saliva. Since it is such a deadly disease, all states require proof of
vaccination for your pets. Puppies receive their first vaccination at 12
weeks followed by a booster at one year. After the first year booster
owners may choose a 3 year vaccine if the state they live in allows it.
Not only is rabies vaccination required by law, an unvaccinated pet
who bites a person, even by accident, is subject to a six month
quarantine or euthanasia to ensure they are not infected. Don't risk
your pet's life. Get its rabies vaccination.
The canine DAPP combination vaccine provides protection
against the following diseases:
• Canine Distemper is a contagious often fatal, multi-systemic viral
disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central
nervous systems. The best prevention against canine distemper is
vaccination. Vaccination works well even in animals that have already
been exposed to the virus, if it is administered within 4 days of
exposure. Exposure to Canine Distemper Virus via vaccination
induces long lasting, but not permanent, immunity. Dogs should
receive annual vaccinations to ensure protection.
• Canine Adenovirus has two different strains:
- Canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1) invades the dogs liver, causing
swelling, cell damage and often acute death due to shock. Symptoms include fever, lethargy, tonsillitis, vomiting, abdominal
distension and loss of appetite. This disease is particularly fatal in
pups often resulting in death in as few as 2 days.
- Canine adenovirus type 2 is one of the causes of infectious
tracheobronchitis, also known as kennel cough. The most common
symptoms are a dry, hacking cough followed by retching, and
coughing up a white foamy discharge. Some dogs also develop
conjunctivitis ("pink eye"), rhinitis (inflamed nasal mucous
membrane), and a nasal discharge.
• Canine Parainfluenza virus is a highly contagious respiratory
disease which contributes to infectious tracheobronchitis or "Kennel
Cough." Characteristic clinical signs are coughing that may be
intensified by activity or excitement. More importantly, the virus
compromises the lungs and airway linings making them more
susceptible to bacterial infections.
• Canine Parvo virus is a highly contagious disease which destroys
the intestinal lining in dogs. It causes bloody diarrhea, fever, and is often
fatal in puppies. There is no treatment for the disease other than
supportive care.
Leptospirosis affects both animals and humans and may result in life
threatening liver and kidney disease. This disease is spread by bacteria
excreted in the urine of infected animals. Exposure to pet urine or water
sources (puddles, ponds, rivers, etc) contaminated by urine are the most
common ways to contract Leptospirosis. The incidence of Leptospirosis
has increased over the last 5-10 years and often claims the lives of its
victims. Vaccination provides excellent protection against several strains
of this deadly bacteria.
Feline Distemper combination vaccine provides protection against
the following diseases:
• Panleukopenia (feline distemper) is a disease that causes fever,
vomiting, diarrhea and seizures and commonly results in death. In
pregnant cats it causes irreversible brain damage to the fetuses.

• Feline rhinotracheitis virus (feline herpes virus type 1 or FHV-1)
causes acute respiratory illness with symptoms such as sneezing, nasal
discharge, rhinitis (inflammation of the nose), and conjunctivitis. It also
affects the reproductive tract and can cause complications during
pregnancy. The virus affects domestic and wild cats worldwide.
• Feline calicivirus is a highly contagious viral disease often found in
large cat breeding operations and shelters. It is characterized by upper
respiratory symptoms, pneumonia, oral ulceration, and occasionally
arthritis. It is a fairly mild flu-like condition and rarely causes serious
complications.
Tests
Canine heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease of
dogs. Adult worms, which reach a length of 6 to 14 inches, live in the
right side of the heart and in the adjacent large blood vessels.
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and the disease is present in all 50
US States. A simple blood test will show if your pet is infected. Monthly
heartworm prevention will avoid costly and dangerous treatment.
HW/FIV/FeLV Testing tests for:
• Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is the most common cause of cancer in
cats. It may cause various blood disorders and may lead to a state of
immune deficiency that hinders the cat's ability to protect itself against
other infections. Symptoms include loss of appetite, slow but progressive weight loss, poor coat condition, persistent fever and diarrhea,
seizures, behavior changes, and death.
• Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) attacks and weakens the body's
immune system, making the animal susceptible to infections and
diseases that don't usually affect healthy cats. There is no cure for FIV
and it will eventually be fatal to infected cats.
• Feline Heartworms are large worms (6 to 10 inches in length) that
live in the hearts of cats and are transmitted by mosquitoes. Signs of this
disease are different than in dogs and include sudden death, coughing,
difficulty breathing and vomiting. Yearly testing and monthly prevention
are recommended to keep your cat free of this disease.
Fecal Examinations are an important part of your pet’s health care. It is
recommended on all animals as part of a yearly health exam and is
especially important in puppies and kittens. The fecal will detect eggs of
parasites living in your pet’s intestines. Many of these parasites are
contagious to people and children are particularly at risk.
