Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed
every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American
Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization
of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged,
and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor
Day marks its end.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have
died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national
cemeteries.
Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late
spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain
areas. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who
were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated
day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives and others.
There often is a religious service and a picnic-like "dinner on the ground," the
traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets
or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil
War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea. Memorial Day is not
to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and
women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Maintenance with Tom
Verify Oven Door Has Tight Seal:
Over 20% of your oven's heat can escape if the door is not sealed properly.
 Open the oven door and locate the rubber gasket around the perimeter of the
door.
 Feel for any broken, torn or deformed areas on your seal. Close the door and
see if you can find any leaks.
 Replace the gasket if necessary.
Clean or Replace Dirty Vent Filters:

Metal-mesh grease filters can be washed by hand in soapy water or you can
put them in your dishwasher for a thorough cleaning.
 Don't attempt to wash charcoal or paper filters; they need to be replaced.
Clean Stovetop Drip Bowls:
 Remove drip bowls from underneath your burner elements.
 Presoak the drip bowls in a cleaning solution for 5 minutes. Then wash, clean
and replace.
 Remember to clean drip bowls immediately after spills. If spills burn into the
bowls you may need to replace them.
Clean Coils In Your Refrigerator:


Depending on your model, the coils are either behind the kick plate or at the
rear of the fridge.
Use a shop or handheld vacuum to suck up any loose particles.

Stroke Awareness
National Stroke Awareness Month is an annual event held within the United States.
The aim of National Stroke Awareness Month is to make Americans aware that they may be
able to 'Save A Life' of a person experiencing a stroke. The National Stroke Awareness Month
program places emphasis on making the public aware about Acting FAST.
According to the National Stroke Association, a person experiencing a stroke
can be treated if people have acted FAST - 80% of strokes can also be prevented.
FAST being an acronym for things to check in a suspected stroke victim:
 F - Face / Does the face droop on one side when the person smiles?
 A - Arm / After raising both arms, does one of the arms drift downwards?
 S - Speech /After repeating a simple phrase, does the persons speech sound slurred or
strange?
 T - Time / If any or all of the above are observed call for 9-1-1 (if in US or 999 in UK) and
ask for medical assistance.

Dare to Dream
Janis is an avid animal lover! So we
took her back to the very place she
got her best friend Annie. She had a
blast at Cedar Bend Humane Society.
Imo and Dorothea miss their card playing friend Eunice so they went to
Eunice’s house to play cards for the afternoon. They had a blast and can’t wait
to go back!
The small things life we take for granted like
being able to go to Walmart, made this pretty lady as happy as can be when we stopped
for her to purchase a clock for her apartment.
Bob had been asking for this photo of himself and another resident for several months.
We searched high and low and when we
thought there was no hope of finding it, there
it was!
