Olivia has qualities that make her a strong academic. She deserves every success and I was especially pleased that she surpassed her target grade and achieved an A* in Business Studies. Applied Business: Alex Close Alex was a Business all-rounder: he was a brilliant leader of the Young Enterprise group; he coped admirably with organising himself to meet the subject’s challenging coursework requirements, setting an example to, and often helping, other students. Catherine Tapp Memorial Award for Outstanding Endeavour in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze Level: Freya Stump Freya has been incredibly enthusiastic and pro-active regarding her participation in the Award. She has taken up Tae Kwon-Do for her Physical Section and has taken part in Impulse singing for her Skill. She has been teaching younger aged children dancing skills at a local school. There is clear originality and variety in her activities and her excellent choice is indicative of the way Freya has approached her Award. However, it is for her expedition that she really deserves this commendation. From being a quiet and unassuming character in her first couple of years at school, she has exploded with confidence and shown real leadership where others, who might have been thought of as initially more confident, struggled. Her group became increasingly reliant on Freya who guided her team with faultless navigational skills in a remote highland area and encouraging others whose spirits were on the ebb. She really impressed her instructors and assessor with a maturity beyond her years with her ability to think clearly and effectively in difficult circumstances. Freya has shown fortitude and confidence and has been inspirational both to her peers and to her adult supervisors. Freya is what this Award is all about. Very quick to help others and infectiously cheerful which gives strength to her team mates, she has impressed her instructors and assessor on both her Practice and Assessment this year. Transferring this to other real life situations will give Emily a genuine head start over many of her peers and you can just tell that she will be successful at all that she tries because of her positive and cheerful attitude, especially when the ‘chips are down’. She has also chosen a variety of other activities to complete her Award including getting herself fitter at the gym for her Sport, cooking for a Skill and especially nice to see, coaching a children’s netball team for her Volunteering. Emily has grown during her participation in the Award and it has been a real pleasure to see her responding the positive way that she has, and she should be an inspiration to others in her year.
