English 1: Students have chosen a topic for
persuasive-based research and will be
locating sources and taking notes for the
next week or so.
We have finally finished the Depression
unit. Students took the quiz Thursday. Our
next unit is WWII. The students seem to
be excited about this unit. (They know
something about it from middle school and
other places).
Honors 1: Students are working with a
partner in the class on a Greek mythology
project. They will present these on Monday,
then they will begin reading The Odyssey.
*I will not be in attendance at conferences
next Wednesday. If you have anything you
wish to speak with me about, please contact
me by phone or email.
Students are having homework a couple
of times a week. I usually put it into google
classroom on the internet, if you ever want
to see their assignments. (They will have
to pull it up and show you)
I plan to have all grades current by
Monday.

Earth Science: This week we discovered the
importance of our sun and started looking at
the scale of our solar system. Next week
they will be working on a lab to better
understand the solar system. Please check
campus portal and email me with any
questions. Parent Teacher Conferences are
next week Wednesday at 3:30.
Algebraic Principles: We will b wrapping
up our work with positive and negative
integers this week. We will move on to
simple geometry concepts next week.
Algebra 1: We will be studying all aspects
of polynomials for the next two or three
weeks.
PURPLE HOUSE:
Mrs. Hansen
Honors- We just finished up our Great Expectations unit with the in-class essay
where students chose a position about the novel and argued that position using
textual evidence and formatted using MLA. We just started our unit 3 over Greek
mythology and the epic poem, The Odyssey. Students will begin group research
projects on Greek mythology, which will be presented and turned in on 2/17. Due
to the snow day, we will take the root word quiz on Monday. Students will receive
root word list #9 Monday as well. Students received their independent reading
novels that they are expected to read outside of class, take notes and journal
along the way, and complete a paper and creative project once completed. This
will be due at the end of the semester in mid-May.
English 1- We have started unit 3 which covers nonfiction readings that seek to
entertain, inform, and persuade. We just finished our reading of the
entertainment and the informative piece. Students choose from a variety of
readings in each category and fill out a reading form as they read that asks them
to identify tone and characteristics of nonfiction. Class time is used for this.
Students will start the editorial part of the unit and will be writing an
editorial of their own, which will be due on Friday. We are still gearing up to
begin the research paper, and thus have been utilizing some of the resources that
will help students write the paper. The research paper will be assigned on 2/17.
Please feel free to call or email with questions or comments.
Mr. DeGeeter:
Geometry: We have had our fair share of set backs and roadblocks to overcome this week with our
projects so Mr Hensel and I have given an extension on when the projects are to be completed. Students
are to have them completed and ready to present on Tuesday! We look forward to seeing everything
come together.
Algebraic Principles: We hare in the beginning stages of Chapter 4 which includes the conversion
between equations, graphs, and tables. Students seem to have a wealth of knowledge and comfort level
with some things and not so much with others. Not to fear though, the last few days they have been
working really hard and we'll be back on track soon.
Mr. Flaherty:
US History: We will continue with our exploration of the Cold War abroad as we finish our second
Document Based Question essay and begin to focus on the Korean War and the spread of
Communism. Containment of the spread of communism will be the focus of this course for the coming
weeks. I welcome any and all comments and questions.
Mrs. Chester Earth Science –
Students are finishing up Unit 5 and starting Unit 6. Please check Infinite Campus for daily updates on
your student's grade. We also just completed a Star Life Cycle Cartoon strip reviewing what happens to
a star in preparation for the Unit 5 test. Please contact me if you have questions about your child's
grade. Mrs. Chester
ORANGE HOUSE:
Ms. Clark
English 1:
Last week we finished up our Nonfiction unit and our editorial essays. This week, we will be
starting our new unit, which will be research-focused. We will be writing research essays on
chosen subjects of choice using SIRS researcher as well as Noodletools, which is a great
resource that organizes student research for them.
Honors English 1:
This week, we will begin our journey through the epic poem, The Odyssey! Students will be
guided through the text, as well as reading independently. This unit allows students to
research Greek mythology, and learn important information on the time period surrounding
Homer’s life.
Mr. Hensel
ESS and IGESS part 2
BOTH: The students have been working on their unit projects and we have been running
into some issues dealing with internet issues here at school, but have been doing very well
to balancing this dilemma. They may have to do some of the research at home and bring in
questions to me about their projects. These will be due next Tuesday, Feb. 10th.
It is important that if students miss schools as an excused absence, that they come
in before or after school to see what they missed. To remind all of the policy that was
shared in the beginning of the school year, the student has 2 school days per excused
absences. Students will receive a zero if the work is not made up in time.
Mr. Mosier
US History
Students started their study of the Cold War this week. Students spent time identifying 8
essential terms related to the Cold War (capitalism, democracy, freedom, individualism,
socialism, totalitarianism, collectivism, equality). Students also worked on a map worksheet
to identify European countries who were members of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
Next week students will begin a mini-DBQ on the United States containment policy and
examine the Cold War during the 1940s.
AP US History
The focus this week was on the Progressive Era. Students looked at the goals established
by the Progressives and compared the Progressive presidents.
Next week students will shift their focus to the United States on the world stage, discussing
United States imperialism, including the Spanish-American War, the poem The White Man’s
Burden and beginning to look at the first World War.
Mrs. Tharp
Algebra 1 Students started their study this week of Polynomials. We focused on
vocabulary this week and naming different polynomials. Students should be able to name
polynomials based on their degree and number of terms. Here’s a link for students to use
to continue to practice their terminology.

We ended the week learning how to add and subtract polynomials. We will continue to add
and subtract next week and learn how to multiply polynomials.
If your student needs to make-up a quiz or test, they will need to have that completed by
Friday, February 13. Please check Campus and see if your student is missing either one or
send me an email and I can let you know that information.
