Principal’s Message
Senior Prizegiving, WSC Hall, Tuesday, 6 November, 7.00pm
The annual senior prizegiving ceremony will be held next Tuesday evening. The families of all
Year 11-13 students who are receiving awards will have received a letter of notification and
invitation to the event. Note that as a result of the new timing Tuesday is a normal school day
for junior (Years 9 & 10) students.
The decision to schedule this event in the evening for the first time in 2012 rather than in the
traditional late morning time slot recognises the disruption to the junior school teaching and
learning programme caused by the earlier timing, given that the larger size of the school has not
enabled whole school attendance for a number of years. It is also hoped that the evening is a
more convenient time for parents with work commitments during normal school hours.
Senior prizegiving is a special, not-to-be-missed event which expresses much about our
distinctive school culture at Springs. It is no less than a wonderful and moving celebration of
student talent.
The normal teaching programme will be disrupted by two events this term.
Early Finish: Wednesday, 21 November
School will finish at 12.30pm on the Wednesday of Week 6 this term (21/11) because of the
scheduling of the NZPPTA’s Government-mandated Paid Union Meeting. Our teachers will
attend a meeting at Kelston Boys’ High School to enable them to be consulted about the
current round of negotiations concerning the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.
Teacher-Only Day, Wednesday, 28 November
This Government-mandated day in Week 7 has been authorised in recognition of NZQA’s
timeline for the alignment of NCEA Level 3 achievement standards which requires delivery in
2013.
The commencement of junior examinations on the following day, Thursday, 29 November,
means that Year 9 and 10 students will be expected to invest this time (28/11) in exam revision.
Parents who would like the school to arrange supervised study facilities for their children at
school on this day are welcome to contact the school office so that this can be arranged. Note
that the junior exams will run from Thursday, 29 November until the following Tuesday, 4
December.
New School Developments
We have been informed that the Auckland office of the Ministry of Education expects to have
prepared its submission for the new school by the end of October. We are still anticipating a
response from the Ministry officials and government leaders in Wellington either late this year
or early next year.
As notified in previous newsletters, teaching staff continue to be involved in a wide-ranging
review of teaching and learning at our school. This review has to date resulted in board-ratified
amendments to the WSC Charter mission and vision statements, which are featured on the
school website. The current focus of this work is concerned with developing a strong staff
consensus in relation to the key themes which will drive the shaping of future student learning
experiences at Springs. We look forward to sharing these developments with the school
community during the months ahead.
Recent Term Highlights
Thank you to the large number of parents who supported the recent Pasifika Prizegiving (23/10)
and the Sports Dinner Awards (25/10). Both events filled the hall with excellent ceremonies
which were highly valued by the students whose successes were celebrated.
Trial of new times of day begins next week:
With the senior students beginning study leave and external exams next week this provides us
with a perfect opportunity to trial new times of day with remaining junior students prior to an
extended trial at all levels in 2013. There are two components to this trial:
1. A uniform start time of 8.45am each day. This means that period 1 will begin at
8.45 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
2. The shift of form period from the beginning of the day to a slot between periods
1 and 2.

Pasifika News
Final Comments:
The Pacific staff would like to congratulate all the PI prizewinners at the recent Pacific Prizegiving. It
was a wonderfully affirming affair with some stunning results from many students. We challenge all the
Pacific students to use this as a motivating factor and incentive to drive their learning at WSC. Thank
you for all the proud parents and families. A special thanks to the amazing Nan and the Manu family for
their ongoing support and commitment: 'there is more joy in giving than in receiving'
We are blessed here at Springs with the support from the senior managers, deans and subject teachers
who were all present, as always, on the night: we know that this does not happen anywhere else.
Finally, we will soon farewell the senior students who leave for external exams at the end of Week
3, Friday 2nd November. We wish you all the best in your exams and extend our love and prayers to
all the wonderful Y13s who are moving on to the next stage of their journey.

The Technology Department require an enthusiastic person to join the Technology team as a technology

initiative to support staff in delivering successful courses. Hours are flexible although it would be an
advantage if the candidate could work at some point each day. The post is currently 15 hours per week
but this is currently under review and may be extended. A current driving licence is essential.

Farewell to our Leaders of 2012
Looking back, it seems like only yesterday the 2012 student leadership team was announced. They were
keen, excited and eager to make their mark. They had big plans and an even bigger commitment to
Springs!
There were many proud moments, some which I will cherish for many years to come. Watching Shayna
plan the school ball with such absolute grace, holding my breath as Hannah’s hair was finally snipped,
making small talk with the International Leaders and doing litter patrols with the waste team!!!!
Thank you leaders of 2012.
I would also like to thank the staff who worked alongside our leaders in 2012. I confidently speak on
behalf of myself and the students saying that the leadership program would not have been possible
without you. You have been there role models, their inspiration and their safety nets. They have been
privileged to work alongside you.

Congratulations to the new student leaders for 2013!!!!!!!!

Waste Minimisation Project Update
The waste audit at the end of term 2 indicated that
Western Springs Colleges was sending 82 tonnes of
waste to landfill every year.
A significant amount of waste considering that 8
African elephants only weigh 80 tonnes.
Thanks to the efforts of our staff and students we have
reduced the amount
of waste Western Springs College
sends to landfill to 39tonnes.
That is more than a 50% reduction!

Y9 trip to Refugee Services as told by Brittany Smith 9AE
Imagine being in a place you've never been before, surrounded by people you don't know, speaking a
language you don't understand. Imagine being forced from the place you grew up in and having to live in
an overpopulated, disease ridden camp hoping for your chance to resettle somewhere peaceful. For many
this is a sad reality. Right now there are over 40 million refugees worldwide. 80% of the world's refugees
are women and children, many of whom have been displaced by armed conflicts. Faced with the choice of
staying behind and taking a chance with all the associated risks that would entail, many have chosen an
uncertain future by leaving everything in search of safety.
Under the government's annual Refugee Quota Programme New Zealand currently accepts up to 750
refugees each year, a high number compared to other countries of our size and population. Once a refugee
arrives in New Zealand they are given a place to live and there are volunteers specially trained to help
them start their new life. They are also given the support necessary to get a job. All this support is given
to the refugees by Refugee Services New Zealand, a non-profit government organisation based in
Auckland.
In term 3 the year 9 students learnt about the conditions and the circumstances refugees face. It was eye
opening for many of the students who had no idea how much they suffer and how traumatic the whole
experience can be. Many of the Y9 classes wanted to help so Miss Dwyer got in touch with Refugee
Services and asked what we could do to help. The classes decided to help them by donating much needed
cleaning products to help the refugees in their new homes. The cleaning products were then taken to the
Refugee Services office by a small group of year 9 representatives and Miss Dwyer and Miss Nair.
At the Refugee Services office we were welcomed in by Janet Mathewson, who then told us all about the
work they do and the people they help. The students had a lot of questions and the people at the Refugee
Services centre were kind enough to answer all of them and even had a slide show prepared to tell us all
about the work they did and why it was so necessary in this time of war and uncertainty for so many
countries.
It was a great experience, one that we will all remember and one that we hope many others will in the
years to come also. The Social Studies department and the students hope to raise more money and
continue this new relationship in the future.
You never know when something could happen such as a war or a natural disaster that could leave you
without a home desperately in need of safety so if you ever have any spare time or supplies contact the
Refugee Services and help them out, it's worth it.
Dance News
DANCE SUCCESS
Congratulations to Lydia Connolly-Hiatt, Cuba Haslam and Taniora Motutere for being accepted into the
2013 UNITEC Dance degree programme. After three gruelling days of auditions the three Year 13 dance
students made it into a final cut of only 25 dancers from over 100.
and...
DANCE YOUR HEART OUT at the end of term 3 was a huge success with five shows being held in the
TAPAC Theatre. Students from year 10-13 Dance performed a great variety of dance styles. Crowd
favourites included Ezra Dyer and Rickylee Waipuka's acrobatic Rock'n'Roll duet, the Year 10 Hip Hop,
Year 11 Michael Jackson remix, Gwen De Leons identity solo and the Year 13's 3.1 Media Merge
assessments. "Run Pause" performed by Levi Howearth, Cuba Haslam and Taniora Motutere was so
breathtaking that TEMPO scouts asked them to also perform in this years "Secondary Colours" at the Q
Theatre.
