Computersandcomputernetworks,includinginternetaccess,providevaluabletoolsthatsupport
theeducationofstudentsinWestAdaSchoolDistrict.Networkusersareexpectedtouseallnetwork
resourcesforpurposesappropriatetotheeducationenvironmentatalltimes.Usersmustrefrain
from any use that is not consistent with the policies, purposes, or objectives of West Ada School
District.
In many cases library research resources, such as databases of magazine, journal and newspaper
articles,areonlyavailablethroughinternetaccess.Also,theinternetprovidesaccesstoinformation
andmediaresources,simulations,andotheronlineeducationalactivities.Itsproperusecanopen
newopportunitiesforresearch,learningandcommunication.WestAdaSchoolDistrictwillmake
prudenteffortstolimitimproperuse.
Allusersareexpectedtoabidebythefollowingrulesofinternetandnetworkconduct:
A. Usersofelectroniccommunications(including,butnotlimitedto,email,webpages,on‐line
collaborations, listserves and discussion groups) should be mindful that communications
originatingwithinthedistrictmaybeconstruedasrepresentativeoftheschoolordistrict.
Donotsend,submit,publish,display,orknowinglyaccessanymaterialthatisdefamatory,
inaccurate,abusive,rude,obscene,profane,sexuallyoriented,threatening,harassing,racially
offensive,illegal,orthatencouragestheuseofcontrolledorillegalsubstances,orisotherwise
notconsistentwiththepolicies,purposes,andobjectivesofWestAdaSchoolDistrict.
B. Userswhoaccidentallyaccessinappropriatematerialareexpectedtodiscontinuetheaccess
asquicklyaspossibleandtoreporttheincidenttoateacherornetworksupervisor.
C. Userswillnotviolateanylocal,state,orfederalregulationorstatute.
D. Users will not reveal personal information about others and be cautious when revealing
personal information about themselves (age, gender, phone number, address, etc.). Users
willnotusethenetwork,internetorindividualcomputersorotherequipmentinsuchaway
thatitwoulddisrupttheusebyothers.
E. Userswillrespectnetworkresourcelimits.Theywillusetheirdirectoriesonthenetworkto
storedocumentstheyhavecreatedandwilldeletethemwhentheyarenolongerneeded.
They will not download or copy large files unless they are necessary for a school‐related
project. Such files must be deleted when they are no longer needed. Through routine
maintenance,individualfilesmaybereviewedanddeletedbydesignatedtechnologystaff.
F. Userswhocan,orthinktheycan,identifyasecurityproblemonthenetworkmustnotifya
teacherorsystemadministrator.Usersshouldnotdemonstratesecurityproblemstoothers,

Userswillnotusedistrictinternetornetworkresourcestosellorofferforsaleanygoodsor
serviceswithoutboardapproval.
NetworkFilter
Alldistrictnetworks,includingtheVirtualPrivateNetwork(VPN),arefilteredandloggedfor
content,sitesvisited,anddurationofuseasrequiredinIdahoCode33‐132.Thisincludesall
guests,students,classified,certified,andadministration.Theselogsarereviewedbydesignated
technologystafftoensurethatthenetworksresourcesareusedforappropriateeducationaluses.
FilteringInternetusageincludes,butisnotlimitedto,obscenematerialsasdefinedinIdahoCode
18‐1514whichisharmfultominors.
ViolationstoInternetUsage
Students
Allstudentsareexpectedtofollowtheguidelinesandpoliciesexpressinthestudent
handbookandthisDistrictPolicy.Iftheguidelinesand/orpoliciesareviolated,
administratorswilldetermineconsequencesbasedonseverityoftheincident.Thismay
includedisciplinaryaction,lossofInternetaccess,lossofallcomputerprivileges,removal
fromappropriateclasseswithanFgrade,and/orlegalactioninaccordancetoIdahoState
Codesections18‐2201and18‐2202.
Employees
Anyemployeewhoviolatesthispolicyorusesthenetwork/Internetforimproperpurposes
shallbesubjecttodiscipline,uptoandincludingdischarge.
InternetSafety
Internetsafetyisacomponenttaughtthroughoutthecurriculum.Itisspecificallyaddressedinthe
followingcourses:
A. K‐5ElementaryComputerLab
B. ExploratoryKeyboarding6
C. Keyboarding6Applications
InternetOpt‐Out
Unlessaparenthassignedadistrict“InternetOpt‐Out”form,allstudentswillbegivenaccesstothe

All works that an individual creates on the network or computers should be assumed to be the
intellectual property of that person. However, all works on the network, computers or storage
devices are open to monitoring/scrutiny by district and building administration, Information
Systems personnel, and/or designees of administrators. All files, materials or documents may be
reviewedanddeletedbydesignatedtechnologystaff.
CopyrightandPlagiarism
All users should abide by current copyright law. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. (Plagiarism is
copyingtheideas,writingsorartisticcreationsofothersandpresentingthemasthoughtheywere
yourown.)Iftextormultimediafilesfromtheinternetorotherelectronicsourcesareused,they
mustbeusedaccordingtotheFairUseGuidelinesestablishedbyfederalcopyrightlawandpolicies
ofWestAdaSchoolDistrict,andcitedaccordingly.
ElectronicDevices
Electroniccommunicationordatadeviceswillbeusedonlyinamannerconsistentwiththepolicies
ofWestAdaSchoolDistrict.Thesedevicesinclude,butarenotlimitedto,handheldcalculators,PDA’s
(personaldigitalassistants),cellphones,pagers,electronicbookdevices,andlaptopcomputers.
SoftwareandPeripheralDevices
Onlydistrictapprovedsoftwarewillbeinstalledbydesignatedpersonnelonnetworksorindividual
machines.Appropriatelicensesmustbeheldforallsoftware.Peripheraldevices(including,butnot
limited to, printers, scanners, and storage/data devices) must be approved and installed by
designatedpersonnel.Donatedequipmentandsoftwarearesubjecttothesamepolicies.
Any conditions or activities not specifically listed above that are not consistent with the policies,
purposes,andobjectivesofWestAdaSchoolDistrictareprohibited.
WirelessGuestNetwork
Thedistrictwirelessnetworkisanextensionofthedistrictnetworkandmaybeaccessedbyusing
theGuestuserIDandpassword,whichisgenerateddailybytheDistrictServiceCenterInformation
Systems.Thispasswordwillbeemailedtoeachbuildingadministrator,ordesignee,anditisthe
buildingadministrationthatwillcontrolgivingoutthepassword.
Byusingthedistrictwirelessnetworktheuseragreestothefollowing:
A. ThiswirelessnetworkwillonlyhaveaccesstotheInternetandnotallowconnectiontoany
districtorschoolserver(s),printer,orotherperipheraldevice.
B. AllInternetusagewillbefilteredandloggedaccordingtoNetworkFiltering.
C. Notechnicalsupportwillbeprovidedtomakeadeviceworkontheguestnetwork.
D. Personaldevicesconnectedtothewirelessnetworkmaybemonitoredandreviewedat
anytimebydesignatedtechnologystaff.
E. Personalwebaccountsvisitedwhileconnectedtothewirelessnetworkmaybemonitored
andreviewedatanytimebydesignatedtechnologystaff.
CONSEQUENCESOFINAPPROPRIATEUSEOFNETWORK/INTERNETRESOURCES
Any action by a user that is determined by an administrator or designee to constitute an
inappropriateuseofthenetworkorelectronicinformation/communicationsystemsasperdistrict
policyorIdahoCode18‐2201,18‐2202,and33‐132ortoimproperlyrestrictorinhibitotherusers

fromusingtheseresourceswillresultindisciplinaryactionand/orlossofaccessto,oruseofthese

DistrictLimitationofLiability
West Ada School District makes no warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied, that the
functions or theservices providedby orthroughthedistrictsystemwillbeerror‐free orwithout
defect.Thedistrictwillnotberesponsibleforanydamageusersmaysuffer,includingbutnotlimited
to,lossofdata,orinterruptionsofservice.Thedistrictisnotresponsiblefortheaccuracyorthe
quality of the information obtained through or stored on the system. The district will not be
responsibleforthefinancialobligationsarisingthroughtheunauthorizeduseofthesystem.
