YEAR IN REVIEW 2013–2014 Message from the President and the Director This past 2013-14 fiscal year, the Art Gallery of Ontario continued its mission to bring people together with art to see, experience and understand the world in new ways. Through thought-provoking exhibitions, inspired programming and strong community outreach, we have continued to show our visitors that they truly belong here. The AGO welcomed 861,991 visitors, and we increased our membership numbers to an all-time high of 93,500 engaged patrons. “ Through thought-provoking exhibitions, inspired programming and strong community outreach, we have continued to show our visitors that they truly belong here.” We were proud to showcase a variety of exhibitions this year that allowed our visitors to examine the role of art in their lives. We explored freedom of expression through Ai Weiwei: According to What?; one artist’s iconic influence on contemporary culture through David Bowie is; and an intense chapter in world history through The Great Upheaval: Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Collection. We celebrated internationally acclaimed Canadian artists with the exhibitions Lost in the Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller and Sorel Etrog. We remain committed to making the AGO an accessible destination and resource for everyone through programs such as our free Wednesday evenings, Free After Three access for secondary school students and free community memberships for GTA-based, not-forprofit organizations serving challenged communities. We also remain committed to providing Ontario students with fun and engaging ways to learn through our curriculum-based programming. This past year, we had 42,755 students come to the Gallery. Reaching outside of our building, we provided access to art in public spaces, with the installation of Ai Weiwei’s monumental sculpture, Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Bronze, in Nathan Phillips Square. We also launched AGO Live Stream, an online service providing streaming video access to AGO events, performances, talks and symposia with interactive features, including a built-in chat box, to allow the public to interact with our works regardless of the distance. None of the work we were able to achieve this year would have been possible without the leadership and support of the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and the Canada Council for the Arts. We thank them for allowing our organization to continue to grow our audiences and extend our reach into the community. We also thank the many AGO donors, from individual members to corporate sponsors, for providing their support for our mission and mandate, as well as recognizing our role in our city, our province and our country. Maxine Granovsky Gluskin, President Matthew Teitelbaum, Michael and Sonja Koerner Director, and CEO We provided opportunities for the public to connect with the work of emerging artists, and with the artists themselves, through our Artist-in-Residence program and our ever-popular AGO First Thursdays. Families found new and fun ways to engage with art thanks to the opening of our new Kids’ Gallery and the launch of the mobile app Time Tremors AGO. 2 Highlights of the Year April 1, 2013 – March 31, 2014 April 2013 • Internationally acclaimed Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller make their highly anticipated return to Toronto with the exhibition Lost in the Memory Palace. The above statement of operations provides a summary of the AGO’s financial activity for 2013–14 and 2012–13. Financial statements for the 2013–14 fiscal year (April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014), audited by Ernst & Young, are available upon request from the Art Gallery of Ontario. (Director’s Office: 416 979 6613) 2. In the 2013–14 fiscal year, the AGO received gifts of works of art with an approximate value of $5,165,000. This is not reflected in the financial data above, but is included in the AGO’s 2013–14 audited financial statements. 3. The AGO records capital asset purchases at cost and then amortizes its capital assets over the useful life of the asset. Donations and grants received for the purchase of capital assets are deferred and then amortized based on the useful life of the asset. 4. Remeasurement related to pension plan is the difference between actual and expected return on pension plan assets. Additional details can be found in the AGO’s 2013–14 audited financial statements. 23 Balance Sheet April 1, 2013 – March 31, 2014 As at March 31 (reported in thousands of dollars) Assets Current assets Accrued pension asset Net capital assets Total Assets 2014 2013 $18,635 $15,786 1,368 - 239,960 246,338 $259,963 $262,124 Liabilities Current liabilities Accrued pension liability Deferred capital contributions Total Liabilities Cumulative net surplus (deficit) Total liabilities and net surplus (deficit) $22,001 $18,902 - 1,823 236,792 242,981 $258,793 $263,706 $1,170 ($1,582) $259,963 $262,124 Notes 1.
