Persuasive Speech
Reminders!
General Requirements
• Time: 5 – 7 minutes (4:30 – 7:30)
• Must use and cite a minimum of six (6) sources
• An outline (25 pts) and visual aid (25 pts) are required
Topic
• May choose any topic!
• Must argue a Policy Claim (uses the words “should” or “should not”)
• Argue against the status quo (do not argue that we should ban
fireworks in OR that go over 12” into the air, because such a ban
already exists!)
Sample Policy Topics/Claims
• You should not cross the street while texting.
• The U.S. Mint should stop producing pennies.
• You should use proper tipping etiquette.
• OSU should lower the price of their parking permits.
• The state of Oregon should ban the plastic bag.
• You should take a daily multivitamin.
Delivery
• Extemporaneous delivery, like the Informative Speech
• Submit an outline, and present speech from notecards
• Create and present a visual aid during your speech
Outline & Organizational Pattern
• Must use one of the four persuasive organizational patterns (see the
lecture slides for chapter 14 on Persuasive Speeches)
• A template for each pattern can be found on my Instructor Website –
customize the sub- and sub-sub-pts to your needs
• Remember general format guidelines (Times New Roman font, 12 pt
size, 1.5 or double spacing, one-inch margins all-around, last name
and page number in right header, full heading on the left, etc.)
Citations
• Each source must appear on the Works Cited page (APA or MLA style
citations)
• Each source must be cited at least once in-text
• You must orally cite each source during your speech!
