To help you make an informed DECISION. Troopers approached and the suspect immediately committed suicide. Columbine High School, Colorado – 7.5 minutes 35 shot, 12 killed Dep. Sheriff engaged shooters outside cafeteria five minutes into event. SWAT team arrived 45 minutes later and shooters committed suicide. Norris Hall, VA Tech – 8 minutes 59 wounded, 32 killed Double Homicide being investigated 800 yards away. Police arrived within 3 minutes but it took 5 minutes to gain entrance to building. Tackled and held by seven students until police arrived 1998 – Jonesboro, AR Middle School (5 Dead / 20 Injured) Fire alarm used. 11 and 13 year old actors 1997 – Pearl High School, Pearl, MS (3 Dead / 7 injured) 1997 – West Paducah, KY (3 Dead / 5 Injured) During a prayer meeting 1997 – Bethel, AK (2 Dead / 2 Injured) 15 other students may have known about his intent 1927 – Bath Township High School, MI (45 Dead / 58 Wounded) 1856 – Florence, AL (2 Dead: 1 shot and 1 strangled) First recorded incident in AL 1764 – Greencastle, PA (10 Dead / 2 Injured) Oldest US incident 6 5/10/2016 326 active shooter incidents between 1966 and 2012 http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/counterterrorism/ActiveShooter2012Edition.pdf 160 Active Shooter incidents between 2000 and 2013 486 KILLED 587 WOUNDED 7 5/10/2016 INCIDENTS ■ An average of 11.4 incidents occurred annually. ■ An average of 6.4 incidents occurred in the first 7 years studied, and an average of 16.4 occurred in the last 7 years. ■ 70.0% of the incidents occurred in either a commerce/business or educational environment. ■ Shootings occurred in 40 of 50 states and the District of Columbia. ■ 60.0% of the incidents ended before police arrived. CASUALTIES ■ Casualties totaled 1,043. The individual shooters are not included in this total. ■ A total of 486 individuals were killed. ■ A total of 557 individuals were wounded ■ In 64 incidents (40.0%), the crime would have fallen within the federal definition of “mass killing”—defined as “three or more” killed—under the new federal statute. ■ 21 of the 45 incidents (46.7%) required law enforcement to engage the shooter, resulting in 9 officers killed and 28 wounded. SHOOTERS ■ All but 2 incidents involved a single shooter. ■ In at least 9 incidents, the shooter first shot and killed a family member(s) in a residence before moving to a more public location to continue shooting. ■ In at least 6 incidents, the shooters were female ■ In 64 incidents (40.0%), the shooters committed suicide ■ At least 5 shooters from 4 incidents remain at large 8 5/10/2016 We must plan and practice simple strategies that facilitate: 1. Intelligent Escape 2. When necessary barricade and hide 3. When no other options exist FIGHT BACK!!! 9 5/10/2016 RUN: Building occupants should evacuate their surroundings if safe to do so; evacuees should leave behind their belongings, visualize their entire escape route before beginning to move, and avoid using elevators or escalators.
