Frederick Sherman, M.D.

Dr. Frederick Sherman has served on the board of directors of The Children’s Home for the last 19 years, and for the
last 12 years, he has served as President of the medical staff and been an active member of the Executive Committee.
Dr. Sherman has provided invaluable leadership for the staff and physicians of The Children’s Home. His clinical
oversight has kept the programs and services on the cutting edge and at the highest level of care for the infants,
children, and families who utilize our Pediatric Specialty Hospital.
Dr. Frederick S. Sherman is a Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the University
of Pittsburgh. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College where he excelled in the study of the history of
science, and graduated from the esteemed Yale University School of Medicine.
At the University of Virginia Hospital, Dr. Sherman completed his post graduate work, internship and residency programs. In 1981 he began his fellowship work in the Department of Cardiology at Children’s Hospital in Boston. In the late
1980’s he joined the staff of University of California and Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, California.
His expertise and focus in fetal and maternal cardiology brought him back to the east. In 1988 he founded the Department
of Perinatal Cardiology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC where he specializes in the care of pregnant women with
cardiac disease, fetal cardiology, and the cardiac treatment of the neonatal patient. His specialty afforded him the opportunity to provide consulting services for most of the local hospitals including St. Francis Medical Center and UPMC Mercy.
In 1995, Dr. Sherman became the Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program at Children’s Hospital of
Pittsburgh of UPMC and he held that position for 10 years. In 2002, he earned his MBA from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate
School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. He has also served as a Board Member of the Children’s Center, a daycare
affiliated with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and was on the Clinical Advisory Committee of the Pittsburgh Regional
Healthcare Initiative.
With a rich and extensive career in academic medicine Dr. Sherman has received outstanding faculty pediatric teaching
awards from the University of Virginia Medical Center and the University of California, San Diego Medical Center. In 2002,
he was a nominee for the Physician of the Year award by Vectors/Pittsburgh. Dr. Sherman is a member of the American
College of Cardiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physician Executives.
An avid golfer, Dr. Sherman was the captain of the Harvard University Golf Team in 1971. He is a member of the Pittsburgh
Golf Club and Fox Chapel Golf Club, where he won the senior championship in 2005. Fred and his wife Katy reside in
Squirrel Hill.
