Key Concepts



Key Concept 1: Some traits are inherited from parent to offspring, while other behaviors
are learned during an organism’s lifetime.
Key Concept 2: Inherited characteristics are things such as hair color, the shape of a
beak, and spines on a cactus.
Key Concept 3: Acquired characteristics can include learned behaviors such as a child
riding a bicycle or animals learning tricks. They can also include physical characteristics
such as a scar.

Obj: (Scientific Investigation and Reasoning) Inherited traits and learned behavior
Activity: Students will work on Motivation Science pages 273-274. We will do 3 problems as a
class and the rest will be individual work.
We will review the new information as well as keep reviewing adaptations for the test.

Obj: (Scientific Investigation and Reasoning) Inherited traits and learned behavior
Lesson: Lessons from yesterday will be continued. TSW demonstrate an understanding of how
to differentiate between inherited traits of plants and animals, such as spines on a cactus or shape
of beak, and learned behaviors, such as an animal learning tricks or a child riding a bicycle.
Activity: In this Engage activity, students will examine characteristics shared between parent and
offspring. In pairs, the students will sort a stack of inherited traits/learned behaviors and sort them into
the appropriate group. We will discuss as a class or have groups present their learned and inherited
characteristics that are visible or inferred from the pictures. We will then conduct a class survey over
inherited traits that the students have or don’t have in pairs.
