Ranch Competition:
Who’s Gonna Win the Term
It all comes down to the final
week. After 26 days of heated
head to head competition between
the boys of the Maltese Cross and
the boys of the Running W, it all
boils over during the final week of
the term.
Many folks fail to notice that
week four is the big point time
during each session. That’s when
all the individual qualifications are
turned in and counted.
Of course, the first three weeks
are important and lay a solid base
for the rest of the term. The
closeness of most terms can hang
on evening activities such as Live
Clue, Ranch Games, Color Wars,
Airlift, Gauntlet, Capture the Flag,
Kingpin and Ultimate Bombardment. Each of those evening
events is worth but a scant 25
points. The lowest qualification
level in each activity is worth 25
points.
The excitement grows as our
boys start to realize that they are
gathering loads of points and
helping their ranches.
This afternoon we’ll learn just
who picked up the most to be
crowned Second Term Champion.
La Junta’s program evolves as
boys age and progress through their
camp summers. When boys finish the
eighth grade, their needs and interests
change.
So, too, does the La Junta program. At La Junta we address these
changing needs and maturity with our
Advanced Camper (AC) Program.
The ACs take part in a program that
is apart from and unique from our main
camp program. Campers work
throughout the session as a cabin
team, participating in advanced
activities, a series of full day and
overnight adventures and beginning
leadership training as they prepare for
a future beyond being merely a
camper.
ACs pursue problem solving, work
with younger campers and a contribution to camp as an underlying priority.
Toward the conclusion of the term the
ACs begin work on the necessary
leadership skills for becoming a
Counselor in Training. They get an
opportunity to assist with activity
classes, participate in discussions with
Program Directors and utilize their
camp experiences to help out with
cabin groups. The AC program is a
culmination of the camper experience
and the stepping stone for a leadership
based staff experience.

The 2011 Rough Riders
Counselors in Training
For over 80 years, Camp La Junta has
prided itself on having a summer
program for boys which not only
entertained, challenged and rewarded
them, but also grew as they did. The
Counselor in Training program is no
different.
Camp La Junta’s counselors in training
are young men who are too old for the
normal camping program and are ready
for the new challenge of hands-on
leadership.
Our CITs are individually selected
because they have demonstrated the
strong potential to successfully make
the transition to staff member because
of their maturity, responsibility, good
judgment and teaching potential.
The Rough Riders are a La Junta tradition
that began in the summer of 1955. After
an extensive observation and trail ride test
- the Rough Rider Nominee Trip, the eight
Camp La Junta Rough Riders were
announced last Friday at the La Junta
Riding Arena as the evening sun set. The
La Junta Rough Riders are the top eight
horsemen in camp: boys who can sit a
saddle, care for their tack and their mount
and remain in control over all types of
rugged hill country terrain. All of this
terms Rough Riders are from Cabin
Hilton, but were selected based entirely
on horsemanship skills, riding ability and
all-around camper performance.
The Rough Riders left Saturday for a twoday ranch trip and roundup in Rock
Springs. They cover many miles of ranch
country on horseback, slept under the
stars, cooked over an open fire, ran fence
lines, worked a livestock pasture and
perhaps, most importantly took great
strides towards becoming responsible
young adults. The goal of the Rough Rider
trip is to include elements of excitement
worthy of such an award, but to also show
the boys a glimpse of what life on the
range is all about. The Rough Rider trip is
fun and full of hard work. It’s an adventure of a lifetime. When the Rough Riders
return to camp after their two day adventure they are proven ranchhands, experienced riders and definitely young men
who “would do to ride the river with”.
The Second Term 2011 Camp La Junta
Rough Riders are: Returner, Jack
Sankary. New Rough Riders: James
Beiter, J.L. Bell, Christopher Buell,
Christian Charbonnet, William Lum,
James Mashburn, Locke McGee and
Welcome Wilson.
The purpose of our two week CIT
program is to provide a high quality life
skills, leadership and counselor skills
training program while simultaneously
offering a smooth, entertaining transition from camper to staff member. In
other words, the CIT program will
mirror the regular camp program in
quality and result.
The program begins with a two day
leadership/high adventure retreat and
ends with 12 days of on-hand camper
leadership experience. Their days are
full of activity classes all day and
leadership training each evening.
Busier than a camper ever was!
La Junta is proud to conduct the
industry’s most exciting, productive and
perspective building Counselor in
Training program.

Special Note About Preregistration:
We make preregistration available on Closing Day to ensure that our old campers have a priority at
camp next summer. If this was a good session and you wish to return next year, please preregister today.
If your son enjoyed a two-week stay with us this year, we encourage you to consider a four-week session
next summer as greater successes may be attained during the
longer session. After successfully completing a two-week
session, you should be very confident that your son has all the
tools and confidence to flourish next summer in a longer
term.
Last year, all of our sessions filled up quickly. We have
already received nearly 200 applications for 2012 and we
anticipate waiting lists by September for all terms and had
them in all terms by Halloween of last year; so please sign up
today if you would like to attend next summer. In the event
your plans change before next summer, the registration deposit is fully refundable anytime before February 1,
