Restoring and protecting the Mitchell

Check keys,
check kids
As Victorians brace for another hot weekend, the state’s leading transport advocate
RACV is warning drivers to be vigilant to
avoid accidentally locking children in a
vehicle.
RACV’s summer Check Keys – Check Kids
campaign informs parents about how distractions can easily result in children being locked
in cars, especially given the sophisticated locking technology used in some modern vehicles.
In 2016, RACV patrols rescued 1406 children
from locked vehicles; on average RACV attended about four callouts a day. The majority
of these were accidental.
RACV education programs coordinator, Elvira Lazar, is encouraging all carers to get hold of
a lanyard and to use it on all car trips with
children.

East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority program manager, Bec Hemming, EGCMA water programs manager, Ken Judd, Reg
Baldwin and Harriet Shing inspect the Mitchell River at Wy Yung on Tuesday. (PS)
Restoring and protecting the Mitchell
Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet
Shing, recently inspected work underway to
improve the health of the lower Mitchell
River.
Ms Shing met with local landholder Reg
Baldwin and staff of the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to inspect the
works on Tuesday.
Mr Baldwin has had stabilisation works
completed on the banks of the Mitchell on his
property.
Having run his 120-acres ‘Picnic Point Farm’
since 1984, Mr Baldwin has been observing the
impacts of erosion along the river’s edge for
years.
The degraded sections of riverbank on the
Baldwin property have been restored through
the installation of rock beaching.
Repairing river banks also reduces the amount
of sediment flowing into the Gippsland Lakes,
improving conditions for aquatic flora and
fauna, and the overall health of the Lakes
system.
The restoration works are part of the Mitchell
River Stabilisation Project, which covers 7.5
kilometres of lower Mitchell River floodplain
on both sides of the river between The Barrier
and the Lind Bridge.
Along with the rock beaching works, the
Mitchell River Stabilisation Project includes
control of willow trees and other weeds; revegetation with native seedlings on protected sections of the bank; and provision of stock exclusion fencing and installation of off-stream
watering systems as required.
These works are funded through the Victorian
Government’s Regional Riparian Action Plan.
“It’s wonderful to see firsthand the great work

Mr Lovick, told the Advertiser
“we’ll be talking about a couple
of new strategies where we think
the mountain cattlemen should
go and which should be put to
government.”
“It’s not just about grazing
cattle in the Alps, but fire
management,” he said.
“After you burn country, if you
go back and graze it, you’ll keep
it short and green.”
Mr Lovick said he isn’t surprised by the groundswell of sup-
port for the mountain cattlemen.
“We have a huge amount of
young people around us and I can
see that more people are interested in our views.
“They want proper management
of fire risk and it’s just not
happening.
“Government don’t have any
idea how to manage fire risk,
ministers don’t know either.”
Mr Lovick said government was
failing to listen to the mountain
cattlemen.
“We have more knowledge of
the bush then they do,” he said.
“It was the Aborigines who
taught us how to manage the
bush.”
Mr Lovick admitted some
members of the MCAV had
dropped off “as we progressively
lost grazing leases in parks, some
have sold and broken up because
we lost our homeland as they saw
it.”
However, Mr Lovick vowed the
fight would continue.

ladies’ challenge taking place
beforehand.
East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Cr
Joe Rettino, congratulated everyone behind the scenes for their
dedication and work in putting
the event together.
“As well as raising the profile
of East Gippsland, it will provide
an economic boost in having so
many people visiting our region
and hopefully returning in the
future,” Cr Rettino said.

underway up and down the Mitchell to ensure
we have a healthier river and the Gippsland
Lakes,” Member for Eastern Victorian, Harriet
Shing, said.
“It’s a partnership between landholders, the
local CMA and the State Government to keep
our local communities thriving and our waterways healthy.”
Water for Victoria - the state water plan encourages water authorities to work with local
communities on improving riparian environments and maximise the shared benefits of our
waterways.
Water for Victoria includes $537 million in
funding over the next four years for projects to
strengthen water security for communities, protect jobs and agriculture, recognise Aboriginal
water values and improve environmental
health.
