Dear Friends:
Every day in Canada, 4 people are killed and 174 more people are injured in crashes where alcohol and/or drugs were
present. MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is a non-profit, grassroots organization that is committed
to stopping impaired driving and supporting the victims of this violent crime. At the heart of MADD Canada are our
volunteers who include not only mothers, but fathers, friends, business professionals, experts in the anti-impaired
driving field and concerned citizens who want to make a difference in the fight against impaired driving.
MADD Canada’s aim is to offer support services to victims, heighten awareness about the dangers of drinking and
driving, and to save lives and prevent injuries on our roads. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
is a terrible crime that touches all of our lives and it is an irresponsible, dangerous and intolerable act. Impaired
driving is a crime that is totally preventable. It is also a crime that affects everyone as it can happen to any one of us
at any time.
MADD Canada raises funds to support our Victim Services, Chapter Services, Youth Services, Public Awareness and
Public Education initiatives which in turn support our overall mission to stop impaired driving and to support victims
of this violent crime.
Funds come from individual donors, corporate sponsors, memorial donations, foundations, community fund-raising
events and Project Red Ribbon. Our fund-raising campaigns include direct mail, telephone and door to door canvassing,
as well as, display kiosks at businesses and shopping malls to remind the public to always make a conscious choice
not to drink and drive.
I would like to thank you for picking up this magazine and for taking the time to read through the articles. We hope that
it will give you a better sense of what MADD Canada is about and how your support of MADD Canada, be it through
donations or volunteering, can make a tremendous difference in the fight against impaired driving.
I would also like to thank all of the people who bought advertising space for this magazine. You have helped make this
edition of “The MADD Message Yearbook” a great success.
Sincerely,

President’s Message
Thank You for Three Years of
Hope and Inspiration
I write this, my final National President’s address, with mixed emotions.
There is tremendous pride
to have been the voice of this
wonderful organization, and
good fortune to have worked
with so many incredible
people who lead and support
our mission.
There is both happiness
and sadness to have met so
many victims and survivors;
happiness to know these
courageous and giving individuals, combined with
the sadness of knowing that it was heartbreak that
brought them to our MADD Canada family.
There is frustration that people still drive impaired,
not understanding or not caring about the risk they
create.
Mostly though, I feel hope and inspiration. We still
have a long way to go before we eliminate this
terrible crime. But I have seen the commitment
and passion that will deliver us to that goal.
Amazing Chapter and Community Leader
volunteers bring our message to communities
across Canada. Generous donors and sponsors
support our mission. Committed law enforcement
officers work, day in and day out, to make our
communities safe from impaired driving.
Hope was in short supply for me when I reached
out to MADD Canada after the death of my son
Craig in an impairment-related crash in 2008. In
MADD Canada, I found people who understood my
family’s new reality. They spoke my new language.
They offered support, and a chance to help prevent
this tragedy from becoming reality for others.
It has been a truly rewarding experience. For
everything I have put into this, I have received it
back a thousand times over. I cannot measure the
inspiration I have gained from the Chapter and
Community Leader volunteers who are making
such a difference in communities across this
country. I have seen, over and over again, people
who have been so broken by grief and loss but still
step forward to ask ‘what can I do’ and ‘how can I
help’. Even while dealing with their pain, they want
to spare others this same wrenching experience.
I have also seen those volunteers who, while they
have not been personally impacted, empathize with
our experiences, recognize the importance of our
cause and are fully committed to our mission.
It is all of these people who make me so hopeful,
indeed confident, that we will achieve our goals.
I also want to acknowledge and thank the National
Board of Directors for its excellent leadership and
the National Staff for their wonderful support of me
over the past three years. We have an outstanding
team.
I hand the baton over to a new National President.
Patricia Hynes-Coates is dynamic, passionate,
motivated and will be a powerful and effective voice
for our organization over the next three years. I
know that Patricia will be welcomed with open
arms, as I was.
Thank you all for this incredible journey of hope,
and friendship.
inspiration, support, success a

President’s Message
Honoured By This Opportunity
To Represent MADD Canada
Hello everyone. It is an honour and a privilege to be the new National President
of MADD Canada. Together with all of you, I am committed to doing everything I
can to end the terrible and senseless crime of impaired driving.
I am being very
honest when I say that
impaired driving was not
something my family
thought about. Not until
a bright sunny August
morning in 2013 when
my step son, Nicholas
Coates, was killed by an
impaired driver. He was
riding his motorcycle to
work. The driver who hit
him had been drinking
the night before and the
morning of the crash.
Nicholas was a son,
a step son, a brother,
a fiancée, a grandson
and a friend. He was
a remarkable, kindhearted, hard-working young man. He had just
started his dream job as a Civil Engineer. He was
27 years old.
When we brought Nicholas to his final resting
place, his dad, Terry Coates, and I made a
commitment to help end impaired driving. We
promised him that we would help bring about
changes so that no other family has to suffer as a
result of this senseless crime.
We found MADD Canada and became involved with
the MADD Avalon Chapter. We led fundraising and
awareness efforts for the Nick Coates Car Show
and got involved with Project Red Ribbon and Strides
for Change. We spoke to the media and the public
about the impaired driving problem. We became
part of the Newfoundland and Labrador Public
Policy Committee to promote improved laws and
sanctions.
My hope for the future – my goal as National
President – is that people will realize that impaired
driving is a choice, not an accident, and they will
make a commitment to never do it. I look forward
to communicating MADD Canada’s message at the
local, provincial, national and international levels
and to advancing important public policy initiatives.
Most importantly, I look forward to being a strong
voice for victims of impaired driving.
As I look ahead to the next three years, I know I
have very big shoes to fill. Like so many others in
our organization, I am awed by Angeliki Souranis
and the job she has done. Her composure as the
national spokesperson for our organization. Her
compassion and understanding towards victims
and survivors. Her leadership and collaboration
with fellow volunteers. Her knowledge and
strength on policy issues. I will strive to follow the
outstanding example she has set.
Thank you.

Young Worlds Change
In the Blink of an Eye
School’s back and
so is MADD Canada
with our new School
Assembly Program,
titled In the Blink
of an Eye.
At the beginning of
September, seven MADD
Canada Outreach Field
Representatives set out on
their nation-wide tour, during
which they will deliver the
presentation to approximately
2,250 schools.
“Our School Assembly Program communicates directly
with young people and encourages them to think about
their perceptions about driving drunk or stoned,” said
MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis.
“We want to educate them on the dangers, and
empower them to make safe and responsible decisions
to protect themselves and their friends.”
A new year of presentations was officially highlighted
with a special screening of In the Blink of an Eye
for students and staff at Vimy Ridge Academy in
Edmonton in September. Joining MADD Canada for
the presentation were National Sponsors Allstate
Insurance Company of Canada and RTL-Westcan Group
of Companies.

In the Blink of an Eye tells the story of best friends
Gabby and Sarah. One night, as the girls prepare to go
to a party, they are joined by Sarah’s boyfriend Dylan,
and his friend Asif. Sarah drinks and smokes pot with
Dylan and Asif, while Gabby declines. Dylan, anxious to
get to the party, decides to drive rather than wait for a
cab. After all, he reasons, it’s not far away. His friends
strongly object and refuse to get in the car. A very upset
Sarah calls 911 to report Dylan, while Asif walks Gabby
home. Even though Gabby, Asif and Sarah all do the
right thing, a tragic twist of fate ends a friendship and
ruins many lives.

Wear Red on November 1st
MADD Canada is gearing up for Project Red Ribbon and inviting all Canadians
to show their support for our 29th annual campaign by wearing red on
November 1, 2016.
Running from November 1, 2016 to January 2, 2017,
Project Red Ribbon encourages Canadians to plan
ahead for a safe and sober ride home if they’re going
to be drinking throughout the holiday season. It’s a
message we promote all year long, but it’s especially
important over the holiday season when parties and
gatherings are plentiful.
Over a million red ribbons will be distributed to the
public by MADD Canada Chapters and Community
Leaders around the country. The ribbons are tied to
keychains, purses, briefcases, backpacks, etc., as a
symbol of the wearer’s commitment to always drive
sober. Red ribbons are available through the MADD
Canada web site, Chapters and Community Leaders,
Allstate Canada offices across the country and
participating sponsor outlets.
Anyone who wishes to support Project Red Ribbon with
a donation can do so online through the web site, by
calling 1-800-665-6233 or by texting “MADD” to 45678

MADD Canada Sponsor ACS Promotes
Road Safety With Innovative and Effective
Interlock Technology
Creating and implementing strategies to increase road safety is a top priority
for law makers and organizations focused on preventing road fatalities. Many
international companies are working towards developing new technology and
tools to manage risks, decrease road fatalities, and increase safety for road
users world-wide.
However, no matter how many crash avoidance
and protection features are built into a vehicle, and
how many road safety solutions are integrated into
the roadway infrastructure, no one is safe when an
impaired driver is behind the wheel.
Alcohol ignition interlocks are an essential and
highly effective tool for preventing impaired driving.
Studies show that over 50% of impaired driving
offenders continue to drive even after losing their
license. As the only device that can physically
prevent an offender from driving while impaired,
the ignition interlock is an essential tool for
keeping impaired drivers off the roads.
Despite the current effectiveness of ignition
interlocks, Alcohol Countermeasure Systems (ACS)
continues to test and expand the capabilities of
ignition interlock technology to include the use
of biometric identifiers, remote monitoring and
vehicle tracking.
Test results and violations can be monitored
remotely; information can be sent from the device
by multiple communication methods or by using
ACS’s AlcoTrack monitoring software. Data can
include alcohol level, driver identity, and location
of the test so alternate transportation can be
arranged in the case of a violation. Integration
with mobile technology can allow the vehicle
administrator to access the interlock settings
remotely and disable the interlock during servicing
or in an emergency. The vehicle administrator can
also view the results with GPS coordinates in real
time.
ACS’ vision is to be a world leader in promoting
road safety and preventing impaired driving. Its
mission is to continue to research and develop
innovative, high quality, and user-friendly
products and services to keep people safe while
strengthening our commitment to environmental
and social responsibility.
As a long-time Gold Technology Sponsor of MADD
Canada, and a Presenting Sponsor of the MADD
Canada PIA Law Strides for Change (GTA) event,
ACS is a generous supporter of MADD Canada’s
programs and services aimed at preventing
impaired driving and supporting victims/survivors.

Youth Bursaries
MADD Canada has always been an organization that has
taken utmost pride in making a difference in people’s
lives. Once again, we have been able to fulfill this
mandate by providing some of our victims with MADD
Canada Youth Bursaries.
Each MADD Canada bursary helps a Canadian student in
college or university whose parent or legal guardian has
died as a result of an impaired driving crash. A bereaved
victim may experience many challenges including: a fear
of the unknown, the risk of possible regrets, a loss of
purpose and direction in life, high stress levels, financial
insecurity and communication barriers that affect
supportive parenting.
This educational bursary of $2,000.00 is intended to help
cover the cost of tuition or residence fees. This year we
have 11 recipients from across the country who qualified
for this bursary.
12
Our organization is thrilled to have the opportunity to
provide these bursaries to students across the country,
as we know it helps develop their skills and abilities to
face the future. One of our previous recipients, Chantel
Parkes from the Sarnia, ON area, completed her diploma
in marketing from Fanshawe College in London, ON with
the aid of the bursary, and now we are proud to have her
as part of our MADD Canada School Outreach Program
staff. She has strengthened her commitment to stop
impaired driving first as a volunteer, then as a student,
and now as part of the MADD Canada National staff.
To find out more about MADD Canada Bursaries or
how your gift can help MADD Canada support victims
of impaired driving and their families, please call Sandy
Jukes, Partnership Outreach Manager, at

MADD Abbotsford hosted a booth at the annual
Abbotsford Airshow that draws over 150,000 people.
The volunteers were kept busy as the booth was right
at the entrance of the airshow this year, and lots of
people stopped by to show their support and learn
more about MADD Canada. The Fatal Vision Goggles
were particularly popular, as adults and kids tried to
walk the red ribbon line while wearing them. Thank
you to the Abbotsford Airshow for the opportunity to
have a presence at the event again this year, and all the
great volunteers who came out to help host the booth.
MADD Metro Vancouver hosted a successful and

Fragoso, who was hit head-on by an impaired driver in
2014. Mackenzie survived the crash but her father and
her stepmom were killed. Youth in the Parkland area
are welcome to get involved by becoming a member
and participating in awareness events.

Remembering and Acknowledging
all Victims/Survivors
MADD Canada’s National Office is the site of the National
Memorial Wall. Hundreds of photographs of victims who
have been killed and those who have been injured in
impaired driving crashes line the walls. People who see it
always remark on how overwhelming it is to see so many
faces of people of all ages and walks of life. These photos
have also been replicated on travelling Memorial Wall
banners that are displayed at MADD events across the
country.
Victims/survivors of impaired driving are our number one
priority. MADD Canada has a developed a wide range of free
support materials. Brochures and booklets include:
• A Victim’s Guide to the Criminal Justice System
• Adult-Sibling Grief
• Child-Sibling Grief
• Coping with Life After Injury
• Grandparents’ Grief
• Holidays and Hope
• Living with Burn Injuries

As well, our on-line tribute site is another avenue for
people to remember those killed and acknowledge injuries
sustained in impaired driving crashes. Memories, photos
and tributes can be posted by families or the victim/survivor
themselves. This site can be accessed at http://www.madd.

and would like to more information on these
programs, contact 1-800-665-6233, ext. 222.
Making a Difference: Volunteering
Why should I get involved?
• Just under 4 Canadians are killed and 175
are injured every day in alcohol and
drug-related crashes.
• Impaired driving crashes are 100%
preventable.
• Impaired driving is the single leading
criminal cause of death in Canada.
As long as there are
impaired drivers on our
roads, no one is safe.
Here’s what our volunteers say:
“If I can save one life, that will be something I
will have accomplished and can be proud of.”
“We certainly get a lot more out of it than we’re
giving back”
“Volunteering with MADD Canada is a great way
to meet people and make valuable contacts.”
“As a victim of impaired driving, I’ve received
wonderful support from a group that
really understands.”
You can make a difference. Don’t wait until you or
your family becomes a victim. Get involved today.

Who is MADD Canada?
MADD Canada (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is a national, grassroots,
registered, charitable organization with Chapters and Community
Leaders. MADD Canada Chapters are run by volunteers from across
the country and include not only mothers, but fathers, friends, business
professionals, experts in the anti-impaired driving field, concerned
citizens and young people who want to make a difference in the fight
against impaired driving.
History of
MADD Canada
In 1983, MADD Canada’s
predecessor PRIDE (People
to Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere) received official
Chapter status from MADD in the
U.S., becoming the only official
licensee of MADD in Canada. Several
Chapters were subsequently formed
and in 1990, MADD Canada officially
became a national organization.
MADD Canada has grown from coast
to coast and continues to advocate
for change to make our communities
safer and to provide victims of
impaired driving with a voice.
Our Mission:
To stop impaired driving and
to support victims of this
violent crime.
