Road Tripping
Road tripping —
Go the West Coast Way
INTRODUCTION
Take to the road, explore, find
adventure, make memories, have
fun, unwind, relax and reconnect.
You can do all of these things and
more with a trip up the Cape West
Coast with West Coast Way.
Whether you are keen on sightseeing, history,
culture, fauna and flora or adventure and
activities, the West Coast and the West Coast
Biodiversity Corridor has it all. Rich experiences,
vibrant people, great food and unspoilt
environments are all just a stone’s throw away
from Cape Town.
What better way to explore and enjoy this
biodiversity hot-spot than with a West Coast
Way road trip?
West Coast Way is the gateway to the Cape’s
West Coast and the unique Biodiversity Corridor,
the most naturally abundant area in South Africa,
and an affordable and accessible destination that
offers fun and memorable experiences for the
entire family.
Farmyard
Farmstall
‘It’s not just about the destination, but also
about the journey’. With wonderful towns,
attractions and activities within short distances
of each other, your entire journey on the West
Coast Way is the destination.
From the Blaauwberg Private Nature Reserve to
the seaside village of Melkbosstrand, up to the
West Coast National Park and winding past
Shelley Point, St Helena Bay and Velddrif (to
name but a few), the Cape West Coast has so
much to offer you may never return!
Start off at the Farmyard Farm stall on the R27
at the turn-off to Melkbostrand for a hearty
breakfast, then fill your picnic basket with
locally made eats and treats for ‘padkos’.
From here, head towards the Koeberg Nature
Reserve, or try the Witzand Aquifer Nature
Reserve with its white sand dunes – perfect for
4X4 enthusiasts and sand-boarding.
Moving on, visit Mamre to see the Mission
Station, one of the oldest, most picturesque
churches in South Africa. Wine has long been a
part of Mamre’s history and you can find the
region’s most popular ones at the Darling Wine
Cellar on Mamreweg.
On the topic of wine, pop in at Groote Post
Wine Cellars which recently won a Klink Wild
Card Award for their alternative farm drive
experience. This family-friendly wine farm also
hosts a monthly Country Market offering
everything from oysters to wild mushrooms and
locally brewed beer from the Darling Brewery
(be sure to visit it when you’re there).
Any West Coast road trip should include a visit
to the towns of Darling (home of Pieter Dirk Uys
and his theatre, Evita se Perron); Yzerfontein
(an urban conservancy); Langebaan
(an internationally acclaimed Ramsar site);
Saldanha (a water sports hot-spot); Jacobsbaai
(the “Namaqualand by the sea”); Paternoster
(and the Cape Columbine Reserve); Shelley
Point (with its golf course and wellness centre);
St Helena Bay (with its unspoilt coastline and
magnificent views) and historic Hopefield (with
its birdlife and hiking trails).

Most of these attractions fall within the newly
proclaimed West Coast Biodiversity Corridor,
while others are just a leisurely drive away.
For those who are keen to explore the Corridor
these attractions, and more, are included on the
GroeneKloof Route and BlueBenguela Route.
Bokkoms at Paternoster
Along the GroeneKloof and BlueBenguela Routes
are many world-renowned ‘must-visit’
attractions such as the West Coast National Park,
which stretches from Yzerfontein to Langebaan;
!Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre; and
the West Coast Fossil Park – with a visit to an
actual dig sight.
The GroeneKloof Route got its name from the
Heritage Site, Groenekloof (Green Valley) - which
was once a thriving farm. Groenekloof, the farm
upon which Mamre is situated today, was
originally land controlled by the Khoikhoi
Cochoquas. In 1697 it became a government
cattle post and between 1701 and 1791 a small
garrison was stationed at what was then known
as De Kleine Post. The GroeneKloof route, which
is ideal for a day trip from Cape Town as all the
attractions are so close to the City, is therefore
notable for its significant cultural and historical
attractions as well as for the rich natural heritage
that it showcases.
The BlueBenguela Route got its name from the
cold, nutrient rich ocean current that runs past
the West Coast which has resulted in the
abundant marine diversity found here. Because of
the fact that it starts further up the coastline, this
route is more suited to those who are looking to
grab a few days away from the hustle and bustle
of the city – and great accommodation options
are plentiful! The BlueBenguela Route allows
visitors to get a taste and feel for the many small,
unique and character filled towns along the
Cape West Coast.

The West Coast Way starts
with the GroeneKloof Route
WRITTEN BY TRACY BARTLET
Having been a while since I explored the West
Coast, I set out once again to experience the rich
biodiversity of the area by following the newly
launched GroeneKloof Route on the R27 West
Coast Road. While everyone was heading to work
in the opposite direction, much to my delight, I
was close to my first destination: Blaauwberg.
Blaauwberg Nature Reserve
Just 30km from Cape Town, the reserve has
spectacular views down fynbos slopes, across
the city, over rocky coastline to the ocean and
beyond. It is also one of the world’s few
viewpoints where you can see two World
Heritage Sites — Table Mountain and
Robben Island.
Koeberg Nature Reserve
A nuclear power plant is not where you’d
expect to find herds of buck, zebra, and a
thriving bird life. But, surprisingly, you do.
It’s popular to hike or cycle the trails to spot
the wildlife, which I’ve done - and enjoyed.
You can also pack a picnic lunch and stop at
the hide for bird-viewing.
Silwerstroomstrand
This Blue Flag beach has an expansive stretch of
coastline in a secluded setting. Take a dip in the
warm tidal pool, relax at a picnic site or have a
braai. A wonderful place to visit for a day, or stay
longer in the chalets and perfectly manicured
camping sites.
West Coast National Park and Geelbek Restaurant Small enough to view in a day,
it has over 200 bird species and a variety of animals to spot and is also very fossil-rich
with reported human remains dating back to the Holocene Age.
Also here is the 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg site
where the British took the Cape from the Dutch
for the second time. Buildings constructed on
Blaauwberg Hill during World War II can still
be visited.
Melkbosstrand
Melkbosstrand is a local favourite and the
quintessential seaside village with many
amenities, including several restaurants. Had this
been my last destination, I would have stayed for
its famous sunset over Table Mountain –
however, my journey had only just begun!

Issue 01
Witzand Aquifer Nature Reserve
The town of Atlantis is bordered by vast white
sand dunes and forms part of the Witzand
Aquifer Nature Reserve. These famous dunes
provide spectacular views of Table Mountain and
are perfect for 4X4 adventures as well as
sand-boarding. As an ex-surfer, I found myself
drawn to the long sandy slopes, imagining what
it would be like to fly down the leeward face of a
giant dune. Atlantis also boasts the longest
historic blue gum tree lane in South Africa which
made for a stunning drive to my next destination,
Mamre.

Tourism Radio City Guides
Mamre
Best known for its Moravian mission station which
still stands today and its old church, this gorgeous
little village hamlet is a surprisingly green and lush
oasis with soft bird chirping as a backdrop.
Groote Post Winery
Home to one of my favourite wines, Groote Post
also offers farm drives to spot buck, ostrich, Black
wildebeest and Quagga. During spring the farm is
part of the famous West Coast Spring Flower
Route. There’s also a monthly Country Market full
of artisan arts, crafts, wares and of course, Groote
Post’s wines.
Darling
Besides its spectacular wildflowers, Darling is best
known as home to ‘Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout’,
the alter ego of much-loved South African political
satirist Pieter Dirk Uys and his cabaret/restaurant/bar venue, Evita se Perron.
Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve
This luxury private game reserve has game drives
to see buck, lion, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe,
zebra, Blue wildebeest and Red hartebeest, African
wildcat, lynx and honey badgers.
On offer are whale and dolphin watching,
bird-watching, mountain biking, hiking and water
sports. It’s also well-known for its fresh fish.
!Khwa ttu
Having driven past often, I finally drove up to
the San Education and Culture Centre, !Khwa ttu.
During a three-hour tour, the San tour guides
share all their history, knowledge and culture –
it’s a truly memorable experience.
“As I headed back to Cape
Town in the late afternoon
I realised that the R27 is our
very own Route 66,
brimming with unexplored
terrain and the promise of
adventure. I had fallen in
love with the West Coast
all over again.”
More on the GroeneKloof Route:
The West Coast National Park
Stretching from Yzerfontein to Langebaan, the
park was established to conserve the Langebaan
Lagoon, surrounding landscapes and the Saldanha
Bay islands. It’s an area of global importance in
respect of terrestrial and marine life.
This self-drive trip is made up of
12 attractions that can be easily reached
via the R27 West Coast Road or N7. Some
attractions have small entry fees, but most
are gratis! Perfect for families, romantics
and foodies!
Yzerfontein
This picturesque fishing village is a favourite. Not
only is it a haven for birdlife, wildlife, sea life and
indigenous flora, it has the longest beach in South
Africa, stretching all the way north to the West
Coast National Park.
This circular route also connects to the
BlueBenguela Route (Refer to page 1) via
the West Coast National Park. Attractions
like Langebaan, Paternoster, West Coast
Fossil Park and Thali Thali, are but a few
that can be found on this route.
06
101+ List
101+ Things to do and see
with West Coast Way
Places to visit
Melkbosstrand
Melkbosstrand means 'milk bush beach' because
of the Euphorbiaceae bushes on the sand dunes
which give off a milky latex-like substance. It’s
the quintessential seaside village with a variety
of amenities. The long white beach is ideal for
leisurely strolls, family fun and is a kite
surfing hot-spot.
Yzerfontein
Yzerfontein is a fauna and flora haven which also
boasts South Africa's longest beach at 25.7km.
Here, a myriad of activities await including surfing,
kite surfing, beach horse rides and seasonal whale
watching. In spring, the Bokbaaivygie flower trail
explodes into kaleidoscopic colour while the
Schaapeiland coastal trail offers breathtaking
views over the Atlantic Ocean.
Silwerstroomstrand
In a wonderfully secluded setting, the blue
flag-rated Silwerstroomstrand beach has excellent
water quality, a tidal pool and a nearby slipway to
launch leisure craft. Relax at one of its picnic sites
or braai areas. The resort falls within the Cape West
Coast Biosphere Reserve and also borders the
Koeberg Nature Reserve.
Langebaan
Known as the jewel of the West Coast, the
picturesque and tranquil town of Langebaan offers
a fascinating array of fauna and flora, delicious
seafood and azure-blue waters bordered by white
sandy beaches. Its main attractions include sailing,
kayaking, kite surfing and fishing. It’s also an
international Ramsar wetland site with many local
and migratory bird species.
Saldanha
The historical naval town of Saldanha is first choice
for water sport lovers and a popular venue for
regattas. Natural attractions include Adam and
Eve, two massive granite vertical rocks on the
mountainside which ‘guard’ the town. The SAS
Saldanha Nature Reserve is a spring floral
wonderland, while the Hoedjeskoppie Nature
Reserve has traditional fisherman cottages.
07
Issue 01
Churchhaven and Kraalbaai
One of the West Coast’s best kept secrets is
Churchhaven in the West Coast National Park. This
quaint little fishing village has picture-perfect,
white-washed fishermen's cottages and a stunning
beach on the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon,
perfect for families and water sport fanatics.
Hopefield
Originally a church community founded in 1853,
Hopefield lies in the heart of fynbos country.
Historical attractions include a church built in
1879, traditional homes and Cape Dutch
homesteads. The large wetland has prolific bird
life, while Elandsfontein is a famous fossil site,
home to the ‘Saldanha’ man’s skull and
primordial animals.
Jacobsbaai
Founded on a farmland, Jacobsbaai boasts a
stunning sea frontage of 2km with seven different
bays. Its coastal fynbos supports a variety of small
wildlife and surfing, fishing or watching the
Oystercatchers and cormorants basking on the
rocks is the order of the day. The sandy beach in
Hospital Bay is ideal for family outings.
Paternoster
Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on
the West Coast and famous for its crayfish. Watch
fishermen head out in traditional wooden boats
and then buy their fresh wares at the small fish
market. It’s also the ideal destination for divers,
kite surfers and flyers, hikers, bikers, kayakers and
art lovers.
Shelley Point
This tiny escapist’s peninsula gives the illusion of
being an island surrounded by sea. It’s ideal for
sailing and fishing and offers safe water fun for the
whole family. Attractions include a 9-hole golf
course and spa, while the hotel has a bowling
green, tennis courts, running trails, beach walks,
sunset picnics and a gym.
St Helena Bay
With a pristine coastline and sparkling surf, St
Helena Bay is the ultimate year-round outdoor
destination. For yachtsmen, canoeists, surfers,
birders or fishermen, it doesn’t get any better than
this. Its calm waters also provide an abundance of

Tourism Radio City Guides
food for the resident dolphins and Southern
Right whales.
Tietiesbaai
The calm waters of this sheltered beach cove
make Titiesbaai in the Cape Columbine Nature
Reserve a popular playground for campers,
fishermen and families. The campsite offers
convenient caravan or tent seafront sites and uses
conservation-friendly solar panels for hot water.
Vredenburg
Vredenburg is the commercial hub of the West
Coast and has the area’s only mall. It was first
named Twisfontein (‘Quarrel Spring’) and later
Prosesfontein (‘Lawsuit Spring’) because the
rights to the spring caused so many disputes as
water is a scarce commodity here. Peace finally
won and the town was promptly renamed
Vredenburg, or ‘Peaceful Town’.
Nature Reserves
Blaauwberg Nature Reserve
The Blaauwberg Nature Reserve has spectacular
views across the cityscape and coastline, including
one of the few in the world where you can see two
World Heritage Sites; Table Mountain and Robben
Island. Its wetland has an abundance of plant,
mammal, bird and reptile species, as well as
various amphibians.
The West Coast National Park
Established in 1985 with conservation in mind,
the entire West Coast National Park is an
internationally acclaimed Ramsar Site. For fauna
lovers, it’s a paradise with over 200 bird species as
well as eland, springbok, kudu, gemsbok and the
rare Mountain zebra. The area is also rich in fossils
recording human occupation dating back to the
Holocene Age.
Buffelsfontein Game
& Nature Reserve
Situated in the heart of the West Coast, this
reserve offers game drives to view a variety of
buck, lion, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest – also
look out for the African wildcat, lynx and Honey
badgers. Accommodation is right near the
waterholes to view animal sundowners up close
and personal.
Waylands Wildflower Reserve
The Waylands Wildflower Reserve, founded
in the early 1900s, is part of the critically
endangered Lowland Fynbos Biome, of which
less than 1% remains. It’s also an integral
component of Waylands’ Nguni free-range
cattle farming. The rustic guesthouse offers five
en-suite bedrooms, braai facilities and a pool.
Tienie Versveld Wildflower Reserve
This little flower reserve is best known for its
massive displays of spring flowers and
year-round bird spotting of Cape Longclaw,
Spur-winged goose, African Pipit, African
Stonechat and Bokmakierie. It’s also a unique
remnant of grassland, fynbos and a seasonal
wetland within the Swartland, and particularly
valued for its bulbous plants.
Darling Renosterveld Wildflower Reserve
The Darling Renosterveld Reserve is one of the
best places to see a variety of Renosterbos, an
array of birds and the red bellied tortoise. If
spring is your thing, then pop in, you’ll see the
landscape transform into a colourful carpet. The
reserve also hosts the annual, century-old
Darling Wildflower Show.
Postberg Flower Reserve
Even though it’s part of the West Coast National
Park, the Postberg Flower Reserve is not always
open to make sure it’s as undisturbed as possible
until spring, when it truly rewards the wait. Keep
an eye out for zebra, wildebeest, antelope,
ostrich, mongoose, Rock hyrax, snakes, birds,
and tortoises.
Verlorenvlei Lagoon, Elands Bay
This majestic ‘Scottish loch-like’ lagoon is the
largest on the West Coast and one of the most
important estuarine systems in the Cape. As a
Ramsar site, it’s a protective area for wetland
biodiversity and teems with bird life, some very
rare, as it lies in the transition zone between
karroid and fynbos.
Cape Columbine Nature Reserve
The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve lies on a
rugged and magnificent peninsula coastline and
