We received 52 cm of snow overnight during one weekend in February which was greeted with mixed emotions. Many skiers where very happy, but other Icelanders hoped it would melt soon. The Northern lights are dancing in the sky every night, and the weather has been very beautiful. We have not had this much snow since 1952! Has technology improved cross-cultural communication? What do cultural blunders look like via email? “Not necessarily,” says Erin Meyer, author of The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business. “Fifteen years ago, people travelled to do business internationally. Now, we work all over the world without ever looking people in the eye. Our communication style may offend, but if we lose business, we just think, ‘Our price was too high.’ In fact, we may not be recognizing our cultural blunders.” “How much social content we put in emails differs. In a more taskoriented place like the U.S., it’s common to jump right to business, but in, say, Latin America, that comes off as being disrespectful or aggressive.” What kinds of “cultural blunders” do you see most often? “Americans speak more in meetings than any other culture. It’s partly due to the participation grade we have in our schooling system. We need to recognize that silence, in many cultures, isn’t negative.” What about differences in providing feedback? “In the Netherlands, it’s common to give blunt feedback. In Mexico, it’s done in a more diplomatic way. In the U.S., we give three positives for every negative, so people in other countries may think their performance is acceptable, when we were really saying the opposite.” How can we better understand our differing communication styles? “We’re often uncomfortable talking about cultural differences because we think the other person will feel judges or stereotyped, but every person like to talk about their culture in positive ways. The most effective international businesspeople laugh at their own culture and ask a lot of genuinely curious questions.” Reprinted from Southwest: The Magazine with permission from Pace Communications, Inc. Our host was Jeanette Andreasson, business developer. We were especially interested to hear about their work supporting enterprises in political affairs, business networking, education, and counseling about international trade and legal issues. Jeanette was assisted by the chief lawyer Anna Petre. The West Sweden Chamber of Commerce is a private, politicallyneutral organization working to strengthen the region's business community. The aim is to create growth and develop the future of West Sweden by helping companies do more and better business and by influencing political Jeanette Andreasson decisions. The efforts are to have regional focus as economic growth is primarily affected by regional conditions before municipal and national ones. The Chamber is a part of a network of similar chambers all over world and some of them are Swedish Chambers of Commerce in the big cities. The office has a history that dates back to 1961 and today the Chamber of Commerce has 2700 members. Approximately 80 people are working full time for the members. Companies from all branches can turn to us for external help, to gain new knowledge or to make new contacts, to reach business goals. The Chamber of Commerce is a meeting place where people and companies find inspiration and create business. The membership is not obligatory by law as it is in countries in southern and eastern Europe. The Swedish companies can join the Chamber of Commerce freely and pay a member fee. The fee includes networking, political influence and some general services, while more specific business services mist be paid. The West Sweden Chamber of Commerce is an active supporter of the big infrastructure project in Gothenburg, the so called West Sweden Package, starting 2017/2018. It includes the building of bridges, road tunnels, bicycle roads, a funicular railway and, most importantly, a regional train tunnel below the ground to make the train system more efficient. It means a lot of digging in the most central parts of the city -- a bit like the so called “Big Bang Project” in Boston. This is a very politically controversial project driven by the “red-green parties” in Gothenburg. We received interesting information about this big project from Jeanette. The day after our visit the Swedish minister of infrastructure had a presentation for the chamber members. This visit is a part of a series of company visits for business educators arranged by SIEC Sweden. http://www.handelskammaren.net/en/ ”We make West Sweden stronger!” ...... I look forward to seeing you in Chicago! ...... Annual General Meeting of the Austrian Chapter in Vienna General Secretary Elisabeth Riebenbauer presented a retrospective view on the international conference 2016 in Graz, Austria, including some photographic impressions from the conference. This report was followed by an invitation to the upcoming international conference from July 23 to July 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the afternoon, KeynoteSpeakers Christiane Brunner (“Climate protection as chance and requirement for the economy?”) and Walter Hödl (“How much ecological core-knowledge does the economy require?”) introduced the participants to the relationship between ecology and Christiane Brunner economy. Several practical examples, how ecological education might be didactically implemented, provided a strong practical connection for the attendees. After being presented a pin showing Puerto Rico’s native Coqui-frog as a gift, Walter Hödl – a zoologist specializing inter alia in tropical biology – gave the participants a spontaneous presentation about the peculiarities of this frog species. We hope that this taste of Puerto Rican wildlife will act as further encouragement for our participants to attend the upcoming conference! ....... It would seem that this noble charge alone will draw business educators to our organization that advocates excellence in learning and teaching and helps its members to network, collaborate, and become successful in educating future business leaders in our countries. While business innovations – and especially advances in technology – drastically changed the social and economic outlook of the world, propelled globalization and increased cooperation among countries and organizations, membership in our 116-years old international organization is steadily decreasing. Declining membership threatens the future of many professional organizations today. Research shows that most professional organizations have been in decline since the 1980’s. In addition to falling membership, researchers find that issues negatively affecting professional associations include: Members weighing membership costs versus benefits Decreased volunteerism among members Increased costs of providing member services Competitiveness of membership recruitment Less member involvement, commitment, and loyalty (McCroskey & Lund O’Neil, 2010, p. 111) In February, 2017, the US Chapter of ISBE conducted a survey among its members trying to find out what our colleagues think about the organization, what they value in ISBE membership, and what additional benefits they would like to see in the future. More thought will be given to the wishes of the membership with detailed discussion on how to achieve the wants of our members. Meanwhile, all our activities and action plans should be constantly focused on these main questions: Is our organization relevant today? Will the organization be sustainable in the future? What do we need to do in order to see the renaissance of SIEC-ISBE in the 21st century? We realize that we need to do a better job promoting a greater recognition of ISBE – especially at the annual national conventions where the majority of our members learn about the organization. Perhaps, membership drives on a larger scale are necessary. But this idea, along with other membership-oriented initiatives, would require some financial support and additional resources. That brings our attention to the need of becoming more entrepreneurial. We must find ways to secure alternate sources of funding. Some opportunities may include traditional fundraising and more recent concept of “friend-raising”— the initiative that would allow friends of ISBE (individuals, companies, and organizations) to make charitable donations in any amounts that will strengthen ISBE. “. . . we need to find ways to appeal to a younger generation.
