Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life…” Philippians 2:14-16a. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.” 1 Timothy 1:19, 20. “Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.” 2 Timothy 4:14, 15. Benedict Arnold was an American Revolutionary war hero. He, along with Ethan Allen led a brigade that captured the British fort at Ticonderoga. He repelled a British invasion near Lake Champlain and then led a very dangerous charge against the British at Saratoga. Later, he was the commander of the American fort at West Point and it was there that he schemed to hand the fort over to the British. That failed and he escaped to the British. They made him a brigadier general and he fought against the Americans in Virginia and Connecticut. After the war, he moved to England. He went down in history as a villain, not a hero. Even the “Whigs” in England frowned upon him. Today, his name is a synonym for a traitor. I’m sure he had his reasons for betraying his country but he was wrong! Hymenaeus and Alexander became traitors. They shipwrecked their faith and then they spoke against it (blasphemed). Why? I’m sure they had their reasons but they were wrong! It is one thing to desert your faith and another to oppose it. Benedict Arnold could have simply deserted his post and we would have probably never heard of him, like so many other deserters in war. But he became an aid to the enemy just as Hymenaeus and Alexander became enemies of the Lord. Paul said that he handed them over to Satan so they would learn not to speak against the faith. Handing over to Satan was an idiom that meant to disfellowship (see 1 Corinthians 5:5). The church at Corinth had to disfellowship an immoral member and the brother repented and came back to the Lord (see 1 Corinthians 5 and 2 Corinthians 2). Sometimes disfellowship works to bring a rebellious Christian back and sometimes is does not as with Alexander. Instead, he became vindictive and did great harm to Paul. We can only imagine what that great harm was. Paul faced much continued on back page suffering because of this faith but this “great harm” must have been especially bad. He warns Timothy to be on guard for this traitor Alexander. Don’t ever shipwreck your faith and if you do, don’t become a traitor and enemy of the faith. If you think history has judged Benedict Arnold harshly, do be shocked at God’s judgment: “It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then turn their back on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit’ and ‘A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.’” (2 Peter 2:21, 22). _____________________________________________________________________________ WORSHIP ASSIGNMENTS FOR THIS WEEK Announcements and Prayer………...….…Patrick Smith Serving in Song........................................Gary Galloway Serving Communion................................Brent Galloway Tom G. ~ Kent ~ Henry - Fred Scripture Reading………………………William Smith Galatians 6:7-10: Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked.
