DEVELOPING OUR
WORKFORCE
Foreword
The Liberal Government is committed to improving the learning
outcomes of all Tasmanian students, ensuring that every Tasmanian has the
skills to fully participate in a modern economy, reach their potential and
be able to determine their own future.
The economic and social improvement of Tasmania as a whole is strongly
linked to education, and our long term goal is to lead the nation in
education. If we can lift education, we can lift Tasmania.
As part of this strategy, we are committed to working with our
educational professionals to support high quality teaching and leadership
across our schools. We are investing a record $1.4 billion into education
and training this year alone, with $1.25 billion allocated to schools and
LINC Tasmania.
Supporting the quality of our education workforce is a key part of
this investment, and it is my pleasure to present the Developing Our
Workforce Strategy – our plan to invest in supporting and developing
the skills of those working in education, with a focus on driving school
improvement and improved student outcomes. Funded through the
Better Schools Tasmania Agreement, an important partnership between
the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, this strategy will assist in
improving the quality of teaching and leadership across all Tasmanian
Government schools.
The Department of Education has been working closely with the
University of Tasmania to develop a suite of programmes that maximise
opportunities for our current workforce to engage in training and
development. These programmes will have a significant and direct impact
on supporting improved learning for students in the public education
system.
This strategy is also an important part of the formal partnership
between the University and the Tasmanian Government in establishing
the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment. This institute will
fast become a centre for excellence in Tasmania, and a key part of its
activity is to address training and professional development opportunities
for staff in our Government schools.
One of these programmes is the School Leadership Development Initiative,
which is designed to provide current, high-performing school Principals
within the Department with an opportunity to further develop their
skills and expertise in areas of educational and executive leadership by
undertaking formal study through the Department’s Professional Learning
Institute and the University of Tasmania.
The School Leadership Development
Initiative is an exciting and innovative
programme, designed to foster
excellence and support the growth
and development of our current
school leaders.
As a Government, we are committed to creating a job-ready generation
of young Tasmanians by strengthening engagement with education and
training. We recognise that supporting our education workforce and
providing important development opportunities for our leaders can
help us achieve this. I encourage you to take advantage of the fantastic
opportunities available to you as part of this key strategy.

Are you a school Principal looking to become
outstanding in your field by developing exceptional
leadership skills?
If this sounds like you and you are ready to take the
next steps to expand your skills, the School Leadership

pathway to a Masters qualification.
This unique new programme has been created to foster
excellence, and support the growth and development of
our current school Principals building capacity across all

The programme provides you with an exciting

the areas of educational and executive leadership by
undertaking formal study through the Department’s

important leadership skills, and the course also provides
a clearly articulated pathway to a Masters qualification, if

of the programme.
Delivered through the Department’s Professional Learning

that the course will take approximately 18-24 months to
complete at Professional Honours level.
Participants will be supported by the Department for the
duration of the course, including course fees paid for by
the Department, flexible study time (although some study
will be required in participants’ own time), and access to
accredited units through the PLI.
It aims to support your professional growth and
experience as a leader in your school and within the
