Graphing Linear Equations Using Intercepts
x-intercept - is the x-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses
the x-axis; the y-coordinate is ALWAYS 0
y-intercept - is the y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses
the y-axis; the x-coordinate is ALWAYS 0
Examples:
State the x-intercept and the y-intercept of each line.
1)
2)
You can also find the x-intercept and and the y-intercept from an equation of a line.
To find the x-intercept, let y = 0 in the equation and solve for x.
To find the y-intercept, let x = 0 in the equation and solve for y.
3) Find the x-intercept and the y-intercept for the graph of y = x - 6.
4) Find the x-intercept and the y-intercept for the graph of x - 2y = 6.
5) Graph x + 2y = 4 using the x- and y-intercepts.

11) A graph passes through a point at (0, -10).
Is -10 an x-intercept or an y-intercept?
12) A graph passes through a point at (5, 0).
Is 5 an x-intercept or an y-intercept?
13) Explain why you cannot graph y = 2x by using intercepts only.
Then draw the graph.

14) Conor has $18 to buy books at Barnes & Noble. They are having a sale.
Paperback books cost $3 each. The equation y = 18 - 3x represents the
amount of money he has left over if he buys x paperback books. Graph the
equation and describe what the intercepts represent.
