Landmark addiction report
is a call to action
F E AT U R E S T O R Y
p.04
“Substance misuse is one of the critical public health problems of our time.”
LEADING THE FIELD
Addiction is a complex brain disease with many risk factors, including genetics and age
of first use. Rosecrance was founded more than 100 years ago as a children’s home to help
families in need. Our history of working with kids is why we continue to operate the largest
residential treatment center for adolescents and young adults in the Midwest and why we
specialize our programs to provide clients the best opportunity for lasting recovery.
The Surgeon General’s report has made diagnosing and treating substance use disorders a
call to action similar to the report on the dangers of smoking released more than 50 years
ago. I remember my father talking about that report: He quit smoking cigarettes the day it
came out in 1964.
This report is certainly an affirmation at a time that is long overdue but still greatly
appreciated, particularly in these times of uncertainty regarding what will happen
with health care reform (or re-reform, as it seems). There is greater acceptance of our
need to address these substance use issues, but that acceptance is hindered by changing
social attitudes and mixed messages toward youthful substance use caused primarily by
widespread legalization and decriminalization of drugs such as marijuana.
You will often hear me say that treatment works. I have personally witnessed the miracle of
recovery, which allows moms and dads to get their kids back, spouses to begin healing their
broken families, and siblings to repair strained relationships with their sisters and brothers.
They can find comfort in knowing that Rosecrance works every day to combat a stigma that
still exists for a disease that affects nearly 21 million Americans.

GIVING
Despite the growing uncertainty in our industry, we continue to be focused on the basics
of recovery. Rosecrance is grounded in the 12-Step traditions, offering evidence-based
and individualized treatment, medication-assisted therapy where and when indicated, and
recovery support posttreatment. We recognize that recovery is a process, not an event. That
is why we have the difficult but important conversations about sober living and recovery
homes, we organize recovery-focused alumni events, and we keep families engaged.
As we continue to grow and take on new responsibilities, providing help, hope, and
recovery to our clients and their families is still at the heart of what we do. This month’s
cover story about our Family Program addresses that addiction is a family disease and offers
a glimpse at how the program helps set boundaries and create healthy habits to help the
whole family achieve lasting recovery.
Addiction: A family disease
Rosecrance program provides healthy techniques for healing and support
That introduction from the landmark 2016 Surgeon General’s report on addiction sums up
something we here at Rosecrance have known for decades. We recognized it in 1982 when
we started treating teens for chemical dependency—as it was known back then—and again
a decade later when we expanded and built a new treatment center for adults.

Peter Mowris leads the two-day Family Program at the
Harrison Campus, where adults of all ages are served in both
residential and outpatient treatment. The audience for that
program includes parents but also spouses, children, siblings,
and other relatives.
Both programs begin with introductions, where participants tell
their stories. Just having a safe space to talk about their loved
ones provides some immediate relief.
Peter Mowris (left) and Kathleen Wolf lead Family Program at the Rosecrance Harrison and Griffin Williamson campuses, respectively. The programs are an
immersive experience for parents, spouses, siblings, and other relatives who want to learn more about the disease of addiction and how it affects their loved ones.
Addiction: A family disease
Rosecrance program provides healthy techniques for healing and support
Common themes of pain, heartache, and frustration often
surface as family members share stories about their loved ones
at Rosecrance.
There are stories of drug use, of confusing behaviors that support
drug addictions, and of the guilt and shame associated with the
stigma of substance abuse. More often than not, there are also
tears.
It’s all part of the healing that begins during Family Program,
an essential part of the recovery process that takes place at
the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson and Rosecrance Harrison
campuses in Rockford, as well as at Rosecrance Lakeview in
Chicago.
Families gain some of the tools necessary to support their
loved ones in healthy ways. They learn that addiction is a brain
disease, what therapies are used during treatment, and how to
begin setting boundaries.
One important lesson is that they’re not alone, which program
coordinators say is a big step in moving forward.
4 reach
“Family is an important part of recovery. Parents, spouses,
siblings, and other partners are integrated into the treatment
process early on at Rosecrance,” said Dr. Thomas Wright,
Rosecrance’s chief medical officer. “Addiction is often a family
disease; without addressing that component, sometimes
recovery is less likely.”
How it works
Support for families goes hand-in-hand with Rosecrance’s
mission to provide help, hope, and the best opportunity for
lasting recovery.
Today, the Family Program is similar across locations, but the
programs are tailored to their unique audiences.
Kathleen Wolf coordinates the three-day program at the Griffin
Williamson Campus. Participants are typically parents of the
adolescent and young adult clients, and education includes
information about adolescent development, family impact of
addiction, and enabling.
“That basic introduction to empathy that lies behind recovery
is probably my favorite part of the whole experience,” Mowris
said. “Typically, families have two to three giant questions; as
they’re talking, I’m taking notes and I make sure to address the
things they bring up so they’re being heard.”
Sometimes, the questions are tied to specific events or times
of the year. During Family Program sessions this past fall,
participants at both sites shared concerns about how to talk
about their loved ones in treatment at Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
“Families are traumatized, and we’re responding to that,” Wolf
said. “This is their time, whereas so much of their time outside
of here is spent worrying about the person with the addiction.
There are common experiences they can learn from and share
here.”
Mowris recently added client-specific family support groups to
the Family Program experience at Harrison. There are groups
for families of opiate addicts, parents of young adults, families
of co-occurring disorder clients, and families of women clients.
The groups are facilitated by primary counselors who work on
the specific residential units.
in the community such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon.
A mother from McHenry County whose son completed
treatment at Rosecrance shared her story with Family Program
participants in the fall. She stressed the importance of finding a
support system at home; she attends Al-Anon meetings and has
a sponsor she can talk to during good times and bad.
“I got my son back,” she told the group. “And I’m better because
I’m using the tools and I have more confidence. “I remember
coming here … I was dreading it. I was so afraid. But listening
to someone else’s story helped me so much.”
Helping families in Chicago
A natural expansion of the Family Program occurred when
Rosecrance Lakeview opened in July 2016 in Chicago.
Lakeview’s first floor houses an outpatient substance abuse
counseling center, and the second through fourth floors offer
recovery housing for adults.
Two counselors facilitate the Lakeview program, which takes
place on the second and fourth Saturdays each month over
three hours. It’s open to clients in the outpatient program and
to those who live in the recovery housing at Lakeview.
The setup mirrors programming at the Rockford campuses, said
Elizabeth Ellison, clinical coordinator at Rosecrance Lakeview.
Education includes lessons about communication, relapse
prevention and how to identify warning signs and triggers.
Families can attend the support groups while their loved ones
are in treatment and afterward. Both Wolf and Mowris also
make themselves available to families as resources outside of the
structured setting of the Family Program.
Knowing it works
Family Program coordinators also talk to families about relapse
prevention—including possible follow-up care at Rosecrance
recovery homes—as well as the 12 Steps and support programs
A sign directs participants to the Family Program at the Griffin Williamson
Campus, which specializes in treating adolescents and young adults for
substance use disorders. That program is three days, and it often includes
speakers and hands-on activities such as therapeutic drumming.

Hands-on education
offers fun glimpse at
experiential therapies
Treatment for substance use disorders, like many medical conditions, is often
a big unknown unless you or a loved one has gone through it. That’s why
Rosecrance likes to invite visitors in to see the process firsthand.
This year, Rosecrance has scheduled two trainings for school-based
professionals to learn about our Experiential Therapies Department, which
integrates evidenced-based recreational and art therapy programs into the
daily treatment schedule for clients. The dates are May 18 and October 12 at
the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus in Rockford.

Jennifer Venezia, an outreach counselor with Rosecrance,
paints a canvas during the art therapy portion of the
experiential therapies training.
The sessions are led by Rosecrance’s team of experiential therapists, recreation
specialists, and art therapists: Keri Fager, Abby Nelson, Christine Henke, and
Jada Miller. Fager said the organization follows best practices to provide the
best outcomes for clients, which include helping them explore new activities
and re-learn good habits to replace activity involving drugs and alcohol.
Rosecrance programming is grounded in the 12-Step traditions and
supplemented by individual, group, and family counseling; detoxification;
medication-assisted therapy; peer support and more. Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Thomas Wright said experiential therapies and therapeutic recreation help
engage clients, which can improve their chances for lasting recovery.

Training specialist Melissa “MJ” Jendusa presented the
information. The talk highlighted statistics about teenage
drug use, common drugs of abuse such as cannabinoids and
prescription pills, and signs and symptoms of use.
Rosecrance has a longstanding relationship with McHenry
County schools—there are several Student Assistance
Program (SAP) counselors who work within the different
districts. SAP Counselors Marqueeta Harrington and Katie
Riechers attended the February 15 training, as did Deb
Smith, Rosecrance’s clinical coordinator in McHenry County,
and Community Relations Coordinator Maureen Collins.
Lakeview’s 30-bed recovery housing program continues to fill
steadily since the July 2016 opening. The outpatient treatment
program is also growing, with options that include morning and
evening intensive outpatient and continuing care groups.

Rosecrance Champaign/Urbana
A new intensive outpatient program (IOP) treating
adolescents for substance use disorders is up and running at
Rosecrance Champaign/Urbana.
The program hosted an open house February 22. Rosecrance
RCU Executive Director Sheila Ferguson said the new
programming will begin to address a lack of substance abuse
treatment in the community that was identified during focus
groups in 2016.
At one of the sessions last fall, activities included art therapy, where
participants created designs on canvases with paint and magazine cutouts;
drumming, which involved attendees splitting up into smaller groups and
creating sounds associated with the 12 Steps; planting in the conservatory; and
a team-building exercise called Helium Stick, where group members had to
balance a thin rod on their index fingers and lower it to the floor as a team.
The existing space was remodeled and offers its own entrance
at Rosecrance’s 1801 Fox Drive location. Ferguson thanked
United Way of Champaign County for providing start-up
funds for the program.
“This was by far the best experience in CEU history,” said Saj Parikh, a nurse
with Alexian Brothers Center for Psychiatric Research. “Your colleagues were
passionate about their work, and the mission of Rosecrance prevailed.”

for veterans, so the combination with
Florian was a natural fit.
DeGryse has reached out to the Illinois
State Police and police departments
in Rockford, Dixon, and other areas
to enhance the already strong Florian
curriculum by addressing the different
disciplines.
Rosecrance Florian Program Director Dan DeGryse speaks to a packed audience at the first
Rosecrance Florian Symposium, which took place in September near Chicago. The event attracted
172 people, including firefighters, chaplains, and clinicians from 23 states and Canada.
Florian Program expands to
serve police and veterans
The Rosecrance Florian Program, founded in 2014 to treat
members of the fire service for substance use and mental
health disorders, has expanded this year to serve all
uniformed personnel.
Florian was the first program in the country to have its own residential unit dedicated
to treating firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and other fire service members such as
chaplains. The program has served nearly 120 clients from over 85 fire departments and
a dozen states.
The unit moved in 2016 to the third floor of the Rosecrance Harrison Campus in
anticipation of the program’s expansion to serve law enforcement and veterans, two
populations that Rosecrance has served throughout its various programs for many
years. Combining the clients into one specialized unit recognizes that they experience
similar trauma, said Florian Program Director Dan DeGryse, who also works as an
active-duty battalion chief for the Chicago Fire Department.
“Through education, research, and our own awareness of working with clients, we
find that there’s a bond and a level of security and safety when people who come from
similar backgrounds are together,” DeGryse noted.

One of the key components of the
program is peer support, and police and
military will be included in those efforts.
Florian has incorporated more education
about relapse prevention and leisure
management, as well as education about
PTSD for clients.
“Combining the units allows us to expand
the scope and reach more people, and
these groups have a lot of similarities,
from the related impact of trauma and
substance abuse on their jobs, their
families, even their health,” said Craig
Stallings, Rosecrance’s administrator of
adult substance abuse treatment.

Rosecrance Alumni Program
still going strong
The 12th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous stresses the importance of helping others, and
that’s exactly what several Rosecrance alumni did during a visit to the Harrison Campus
in Rockford.
Alumni Walter W., Jamie A., Jill G., Mike Y., and Kelli F. spoke January 18 to adult
clients who are being treated for substance use disorders. They visited specific units—
specialized for populations such as women, young men, and individuals diagnosed with
opiate-specific disorders—and came together at the end of the day for a panel discussion
with the combined group of clients.
The event highlighted changes to Rosecrance’s longstanding Alumni Program,
which aims to keep alums connected through sober activities and educational events
to enhance their opportunities for lasting recovery. Changes to the program include
new leadership: the Rev. James E. Swarthout is the new director of clergy and alumni
relations, and Rebecca Jaster is the new alumni coordinator. Both previously served in
clinical and community relations roles at Rosecrance for several years.
There were common themes of hope and wisdom shared during the January alumni
event. Jamie brought his guitar and played some of the songs he wrote during and after
treatment for clients. He talked a lot about perspective and how it was important for
him in recovery to change how he reacted to people and situations.
“I’ve been exactly where you are listening to someone tell their story,” he told a group of
male clients. “I’m a grateful recovering addict, and I’m building a new way of life. You
can learn to love your life.”

Quitting smoking a
target for young clients
Rosecrance has started doing more
with its smoking cessation efforts at the
Griffin Williamson Campus for 18- and
19-year-old clients being treated for
substance use disorders.
The campus is already smoke-free, so
staff work to reduce smoking for all
clients from the time they are admitted.
The efforts were supported by a recent
study in the Journal of Substance
Abuse Treatment that noted, “Quitting
smoking did not adversely affect alcohol
and other drug (AOD) outcomes and
was associated with better prognosis of
lowered AOD cravings for youths with
and without ADHD.”
“Tobacco is the most abused substance
we have in this country, and it comes
with some of the worst morbidity and
mortality issues,” said Dr. Thomas
Wright, Rosecrance’s chief medical
officer. “It’s important that we work with
clients and help them develop individual
plans they can put into practice after
they leave.”
Adam Hartzell, Rosecrance’s unit
coordinator for the young men’s unit at
Griffin Williamson, said staff uses the
Web-based program at smokefree.gov
to create individualized plans for clients.
The site includes education on the health
effects of smoking, tools and tips for
quitting, and many other resources.
Clients also have access to smoking
cessation medication such as nicotine
patches to help them curb cravings
during treatment.

Training helps people
respond to mental
health emergencies
If someone is having a panic attack, do you
know how to help?
Can you recognize the signs of depression,
anxiety, or a substance use disorder in a
friend or family member?
Rosecrance continues to educate the public on these issues
by providing training in Mental Health First Aid USA, a
groundbreaking education program that teaches individuals
how to identify and respond to signs of mental illnesses and
substance use disorders. Rosecrance started offering the eighthour course in 2013.
Nearly 30 participants—including social workers, counselors,
first responders, and nurses—attended an Adult Mental
Health First Aid class last summer taught by Sarra Reichwald,
Rosecrance’s director of education and staff development. The
group was comprised of mostly Rockford-area organizations,
but the course also drew people from the Chicago suburbs,
Iowa, and Wisconsin.
While basic first aid teaches how to respond with techniques
such as CPR during a medical emergency, Mental Health
First Aid trains individuals how to respond in a mental health
emergency and offer support through early intervention.
“It’s very intentional about making sure you’re helping someone
as soon as you see the potential for what could be a mental
health or substance abuse issue,” Reichwald said.
Those who attend the course learn a five-step action plan to
respond to individuals who are in a mental health crisis until
they can be linked with appropriate care.
Teri Lafferty, pastor at Evans United Methodist Church in
Machesney Park, attended the summer training in an effort
to be proactive in her work with parishioners. Shortly after,
Lafferty said she was better prepared to talk with a young
person who had been experiencing suicidal thoughts.
“I never know what might happen when I meet
with someone, so I value these trainings a great
deal,” Lafferty said.
In an effort to provide more public trainings,
Rosecrance Outreach Counselor Lindsey
Vass is working on her certification to present
Mental Health First Aid that is tailored toward
adolescents.
Sessions scheduled so far this year are as follows:
l June 22 and September 14,
Adult Mental Health First Aid;
l July 20,
Adolescent Mental Health First Aid.
Sarra Reichwald, Rosecrance’s director of education and staff development, teaches the
June 13 Mental Health First Aid course at the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus.

Ronda H. was already proud
of the strides she had taken
in her recovery from mental
health and substance abuse
issues. Now she has some
added inspiration from a
smiley, curly-haired little boy.
Ronda H. has excelled in treatment through the Rosecrance Ware Center, thanks to the
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program. ACT is a 24/7 program of intensive support.
A pretty turbulent history followed
the 39-year-old mom when she came
to Rosecrance in 2011. Ronda endured
trauma as a teenager, used drugs, and had
gone on and off medication for bipolar
disorder through the years.
“We watch out for one another,” she said.
“I came a long way from being wild
and disrespectful like I used to be,” she
said. “If you would have seen me then
compared to now? Everybody’s really
proud that I’ve turned myself around.”
“I feel God put (Roy) in my life for a
reason. Maybe for me to slow down, to
learn that I can’t always win and fight
with people,” she said.
Ronda undergoes Assertive Community
Treatment, more commonly known as
ACT. The treatment is intensive and
delivered four days a week by a team of
individuals from the Rosecrance Ware
Center. They help her with grocery
shopping and budgeting if she needs it;
she and other ACT clients go bowling
and do other leisure activities together.
Her son, Roy, was born on July 4, 2016.
Ronda said raising a child is challenging,
but she prioritizes her mental health and
wellness.
Ronda credits the coping skills she has
learned through ACT with helping her be
more mindful and patient. Jill Hartwig,
a behavioral health case manager at the
Ware Center, commended Ronda for
working hard on her recovery, especially
through a challenging pregnancy.
“Some people don’t come out of stuff like
this, but I was blessed to come out of it,”
Ronda said. “Rosecrance helped me a lot.
I still go through things daily, but I’m
strong. Every day, I’m strong.”
“Some people don’t come
out of stuff like this, but I was
blessed to come out of it.”
-Ronda H.
Ronda makes it a point to stand up for
her fellow ACT clients. Even though she
might be further along in the program, “I
don’t treat them differently,” she said. But
her progression does have her thinking
about what steps she’s taking next in
her life.
“I’ve started to think about the future, one
step at a time,” she said.

Leadership changes announced
David Gomel, Ph.D., was named president of Rosecrance, Inc.,
a subsidiary of Rosecrance Health Network, in January. Gomel
began working for Rosecrance in 1993 as a counselor in adult
substance abuse treatment. He earned his doctorate degree in
2016 and has overseen the day-to-day services at Rosecrance’s
many sites and expanding organization for several years. In
this new role, Gomel will be responsible for all programs and
services offered by Rosecrance, Inc. and continue to report
directly to Philip Eaton, who will remain president/CEO of
Rosecrance Health Network. Eaton will oversee the areas
of marketing, finance, human resources, and development/
communications. Through this organizational change, Eaton
will also have the opportunity to concentrate on future growth
to the organization and areas that may be added to RHN.
Eaton will devote greater focus and vision to the strategic areas
of advocacy and public policy, as well as the development area,
including donor relations and fundraising.
New director of nursing joins team
Rosecrance hired a new director of nursing with experience in
both the U.S. and abroad. Allison Pale, who joined the staff
in January, has been a registered nurse for 16 years, with 14
of those years spent as a family nurse practitioner. She comes
to Rockford from her most recent role as director of nursing
for Planned Parenthood of New York City and also spent
time working in San Francisco and Vermont. Pale earned her
12 reach
bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s degree in
nursing from the University of California San Francisco. After
receiving her master’s degree, she worked in Africa for several
years with Doctors Without Borders. Rosecrance relies on a
medical leadership team of about two dozen people, including
psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and nurses who manage
the care for thousands of children, teens, adults, and families
undergoing addiction and mental health treatment each year.
Rosecrance earns recognition for work with
young adults
Addiction Professional honored Rosecrance’s young adult
substance abuse treatment services with a 2016 Outstanding
Clinical Care Award. The awards honor clinical programs
that effectively deliver addiction treatment to underserved or
challenging populations. Rosecrance’s specialized programming
allows young adults struggling with substance abuse the
opportunity to heal, mature, and become grounded in recovery
as they progress toward a successful and drug-free future. The
97-bed Rosecrance Harrison Campus in Rockford offers a
16-bed unit specifically for young adult men. In addition, the
campus has a 12-bed opiate-specific unit that serves clients
between the ages of 18 and 30. In July 2016, Rosecrance
Lakeview opened its doors, offering an outpatient counseling
center and recovery residence in Chicago that specializes
in treating young adults. Rosecrance also offers intensive
outpatient services for young adults at several of its satellite
locations to make programs accessible when and where they are
needed the most. Visit rosecrance.org for a link to a story about
Rosecrance’s programs and the award in Addiction Professional
magazine.
New Life offers clinical trainings
Know Your Chicago event deemed a success
The first in a series of clinical excellence trainings drew
maximum-capacity attendance February 10 in collaboration with
Rosecrance New Life Outpatient Center and Burlington Labs
in Davenport, Iowa. Edwin G. Baker, education specialist with
Burlington Labs, spoke about the opioid crisis, addiction as a
brain disease, medication-assisted treatment and recovery, and
cannabinoids such as marijuana. The quarterly trainings are free,
and participants can earn continuing education units (CEUs)
that are board-certified in the states of Iowa and Illinois. Future
trainings will continue to focus on topics that educate and provide
answers about current drug trends. Visit rosecrance.org for more
information.
Rosecrance had the unique opportunity to participate in the
Know Your Chicago 2016 Tour Season. Know Your Chicago,
founded in 1948, encourages residents to be more active and
engaged citizens by learning about Chicago organizations,
issues and landmarks. The two-day event at Loyola University
featured law enforcement officials and a panel discussion with
Rosecrance’s Maureen Collins, Merry Beth Sheets, and Melissa
“MJ” Jendusa, as well as Dr. Marla Kushner. Rosecrance alumni
also shared their stories of addiction and recovery.
Outpatient treatment programs start in
Chicago suburbs
A Rosecrance program that expands access to behavioral health
services in schools continues this year thanks to a grant from
the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. The $40,000
grant from the Dr. Louis & Violet Rubin Fund supports the
Open Access Child and Family Counseling program, which
integrates short-term counseling services for children of all
ages served by the School-Based Health Center at Auburn
High School in Rockford. Services are available regardless of
families’ ability to pay. The goal is to help students manage
their behavioral health in a proactive way and prevent mental
health crises. During the first year of the program, Rosecrance
observed a 22 percent reduction in the number of Screening,
Assessment and Support Services (SASS) administered in the
61101 ZIP code, which serves the health center. SASS is the
emergency behavioral health response for children living in
Winnebago and Boone counties, and the assessments take place
where their crisis occurs.
Rosecrance has launched intensive outpatient addiction
treatment programs (IOPs) for adults of all ages at its offices
in Northbrook, Frankfort, and La Grange. IOPs allow
individuals to focus on recovery skills while staying in their
home environments. Program clients participate in treatment
nine hours a week using an evidence-based curriculum that
includes individual and family counseling; peer support; 12Step group introduction; experiential therapies; and education
about the disease of addiction, life skills, and relapse prevention.
This program is an expansion of young adult IOPs that already
existed at the sites. The offices also offer free, confidential
drug and alcohol evaluations. Call 815-391-1000 for more
information.

2017 Rosecrance
Foundation
Chicago Benefit
Attendees of the 2017 Rosecrance Foundation Benefit are
invited to “Say Yes” to supporting recovery this year with special
performer Kristian Bush of Sugarland.
Tuesday, September 26
The benefit takes place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, at
Giovanni’s Restaurant & Convention Center in Rockford. Last
year’s event attracted a sold-out crowd of more than 800 guests
who helped celebrate Rosecrance’s 100th anniversary.
Proceeds from the benefit will support The Kinley Charity
Care Fund, which helps youth, adults, and families who seek
treatment for substance abuse and mental illness. The fund
has provided nearly $8 million in charity care since it was
established in 1984.
Kristian Bush is a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter,
producer, multi-instrumentalist, and one-half of the platinumselling country duo Sugarland. Bush founded Sugarland in
2002, and the group has sold more than 22 million albums
worldwide. His country-pop debut solo album, “Southern
Gravity,” was released in 2015 to rave reviews, and his new song,
“Forever Yours (Say Yes),” is the title song for a popular TLC
show and the inspiration for this year’s benefit theme.
Benefit attendees are encouraged to dress in country casual
attire. The event also will feature presentation of the Castle
Award, which recognizes an individual or family that has
provided exceptional or exemplary leadership to advance the
mission of Rosecrance. Benefactors also can mingle with
Kristian Bush during a special reception prior to the event.
Kristian Bush is best known as one-half of the platinum-selling country
duo Sugarland, but he’s been making his mark on music for more than two
decades. He started his career in the early 1990s and today is a Grammywinning singer, songwriter, and producer.
“We are grateful for the continued support of our benefactors
and the community at large. They help us serve more people
each year who come to us in need of help with addiction and
mental illness,” said Anne Boccignone, Rosecrance’s vice
president of communications and development. “Our annual
benefit allows us to share stories of recovery and celebrate those
who help us make a difference and save lives.”
Benefit tickets are $200 each or $2,000 for a table of 10, and
benefactor opportunities are still available. Contact Betsy
Liotus at 815-387-1601 or [email protected] for more
information. Visit rosecrance.org/foundation-fundraisers to

Rosecrance staff, board members, and community volunteers.

The Krups were original members of
The Rosecrance Corps along with Phil and Cherri Eaton, John and Robbie Mink, and
others during the 1970s. The Corps worked with the young boys that Rosecrance used
to serve at its first location on Alpine Road. Carol said they made sure every boy had a
birthday cake, and they would do monthly outings.
Randy spent more than 40 years as a Rosecrance board member. His introduction to
Rosecrance was through the Blackhawk Valley Region Sports Car Club of America,
which donated money to the agency from its annual auto show. He was also involved
with the Try-Beta Club, a service organization in Rockford that continues to fundraise
for Rosecrance and other local community organizations.
As Rosecrance grew through the years, Randy helped scout new locations and make
key decisions alongside fellow board members and Eaton for new building projects.
Carol was integral in helping with the flower sale that used to happen at the Alpine
campus; the event morphed into Flower Day that now takes place at Gensler Gardens.
She recalled that Corps members were responsible to sell the flowers and watch them
during the weekend sale, which involved spending the night with the flowers in a tent
outside the campus.
“Both Randy and I have felt Rosecrance is a very honorable and good charity to assist
young people and adults to obtain mental health and drug and alcohol treatment so
that they could become productive members of our society,” Carol said.
The Krups remain faithful Rosecrance benefactors and are members of The 1916
Society, which honors people who have remembered Rosecrance in their wills and
trusts. The name reflects the year Rosecrance was founded and gives a nod to our
founders, James and Fanny Rosecrance.
“I’ve always felt so strongly about the people who work at Rosecrance,” Randy said. “I
think we’ve got the best of the best, we really do. … I wanted the agency to succeed,
and it really became dear to me that it did.”

Thank you to our
generous donors
Rosecrance is fortunate to receive support
through the year from many sources,
from donors to volunteers to community
organizations. Our young clients at the
Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus
are enjoying new fitness equipment thanks
to a generous donation from two area
resources: Dick and Marianne Drogosz
and the Freeport Community Foundation,
and the Try-Beta Club of Rockford.
Clients undergoing treatment for
substance use disorders use the equipment
up to three times a week to work on
their physical strength, which plays an
important role in the recovery process.
John and Marilyn McDonough were lead donors for the Launch to Life
Campaign. John was also the chairperson for the campaign.
The Rosecrance Foundation is deeply grateful for the
tremendous support of the Launch to Life Campaign for
Rosecrance Lakeview in Chicago.
The Launch to Life Campaign raised $1 million to support the total $5.5 million
project. We’d like to specially thank the Foglia Family Foundation, John and Marilyn
McDonough, the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church,
Allstate Insurance Company, and the Orput family for their support.
Donor commitments allowed Rosecrance to create a thoughtfully designed new facility
with a unique concept: a counseling center that offers substance abuse treatment to
the surrounding community and housing that meets a growing need for an enhanced
recovery living environment.
The Launch to Life program at Rosecrance Lakeview offers recovery housing
complemented with proven strategies and programming to help young adult residents
successfully make the transition to lasting recovery and to a life of full potential.
The John M. Drogosz Youth Substance
Abuse Prevention/Treatment Memorial
Fund was established in December 2010
by Dick and Marianne to honor the
memory of their son.
Try-Beta Club, a local service group, has
provided generous support to Rosecrance
and other area organizations over its four
decades of civic service.
The holidays were also a busy time for
Rosecrance, thanks to the generous
support of volunteers and donors who
helped our clients in several ways:
l Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rockford donated 85 Christmas food baskets for our clients at the Ware Center;
l The Toymakers of Aldersgate Church donated two full boxes of incredible, handmade toy puppets and cars for our clients.
