Message from the Superintendent
Hard Hat Time
Many of our construction projects were finished this past school
year. These include a multi-use synthetic turf field; state-of-theart competition track; new Rocket Stadium sound system; new
lights on soccer field; softball pinwheel improvements in
partnership with Twins Grant work; new gymnastics facility;
updated auditorium finishes including curtains and thrust stage;
high school parking lot improvements including drain tile, storm
sewer, curbing and pavement; new parking lot addition at the
elementary school; new Rocket Power Center strength training
facility; new windows in older classroom portion of middle
school building; new water infiltration storage tank system at the
middle school; renovations to the elementary front office; new
back-up boiler at the elementary school; additional exterior
lighting for ECFE/Galaxy entrance and upgraded network
infrastructure and campus wide wireless network.
By Paul Durand, Superintendent
This is an exciting time in our district, for
our students and the Rockford, Greenfield
and Corcoran communities. And this
summer it is also hard hat time.
We have a lot to be proud of. Our District #883 enrollment has
steadily grown each of the past four years, with an additional 62
students this past year alone.
Regarding our excellent programs, we have completed a third
year as a STEM magnet middle school, completed a third year
with EXCEL, the grade 1-8 gifted and talented pull out program,
completed a fourth year of all-day every-day kindergarten,
tuition-free and a tenth year as a ARTS magnet elementary
school. We also saw our athletic teams and fine arts make it to
sub-sections, sections, and state competitions.
With all of these changes, more is yet to come. Community
members are reminded that the majority of construction projects
are occurring during the summer months in the district. Many
areas will be zoned as construction areas and off-limits to all but
construction workers.
Other noteworthy items include the Future Farmers of America
club was started as well as our agriculture program in the middle
and high schools. Rockford Middle School held their second
annual Career Fair to a great success this year. Middle school
students participated in the state-wide WE Day in October, a day
proclaimed by Governor Mark Dayton. Piano lesson program for
all third grade students was started this year and will add fourth
grade in 2014-15. Launching Pad Preschool received a 4-Star
Rating, the highest rating given, from the MN Parent Aware
Quality Rating System. These are just a few of the great things
that happen in our schools every day.
These necessary updates and improvements will affect all of the
high school, as well as all fields and most of the parking lots
around the high school, and most of the middle school rooms. All
these areas will be closed for staff and public use.
The areas that will remain open at the middle school include the
district office and the gymnastics gym. The elementary school
office, Galaxy Kids and other specific rooms will also be
available during the summer months. The Rockford Community
Center will also be open for their regular summer hours.
With our staff, over 65% of Rockford teachers hold master’s
degrees and this is the third year in the MDE Q-Comp program.
We are proud of our staff and the work they have accomplished
with our students.
Community members are asked to honor the construction zone
signs for their own safety. Various construction projects will
continue through 2015.
I would like to thank you, our parents and community, for your
support this past year as well as previous years, whether it is
through the bond issue for the facility and grounds improvements
in the district; in the classroom through the many volunteers our
schools have; at plays, concerts or games showing your school
spirit; or through the Rockford Education Foundation, ISD 883
Dollars for Scholars, Partners in Education and Rocket Boosters.
District #883 is what it is today because of you.

Exciting New Options for
Launching Pad Preschool
Launching Pad Preschool is excited to launch new programs
for the 2014-2015 school year.
The early years of a child’s life are vitally important, and
though educators and parents may have believed this all along,
research focused on child development and brain development
overwhelmingly confirms it. Quality early education opportunities
provide a strong foundation for children as they learn and strengthen skills that are the roots of lifelong
learning and future success.
Scholarship Dollars—More scholarship dollars and new scholarship programs have become available for
families, in addition to the sliding fee scale that has always been available. This means that for those who qualify, tuition fees paid
by parents for preschool may be reduced or eliminated completely. “Being able to offer these extra scholarship funds opens up
access to all of our class options for students whose families may not have been able to afford them before. I encourage parents who
wonder if they may qualify to contact our office for more information,” Tiffany Reinhard, Rockford Area Early Childhood Programs
Coordinator, said.
Free Bus Transportation—Beginning this fall, Launching Pad Preschool will no longer charge a fee for bus transportation. Busing
will be available on regular district routes as long as there is room on the bus. “Having a transportation option removes a barrier for
families who are seeking quality preschool experiences for their child,” commented Reinhard.
On-Line Assessment—Launching Pad Preschool will also be implementing a new on-line assessment tool this fall, called Teaching
Strategies GOLD. This tool is research based, authentic and developmentally appropriate. It is also aligned with Minnesota’s Early
Learning Standards. The paper version of the assessment tool was implemented this year. This on-line version is capable of
generating information that will better assist each classroom teacher in meeting the needs of every child.
English Language Learner Services—Launching Pad Preschool is working to bring ELL (English Language Learner) services to
its students who may not speak or understand English. “With language acquisition being fundamental in the early years of a child’s
life, it seems only fitting to take advantage of this window of opportunity and support these skills beginning in preschool before
children are 5 years old,” Reinhard commented.
“We are very passionate about working together to build the strongest foundation possible for our youngest children, assisting them
in being ready for kindergarten and life beyond,” stated Reinhard. “Investing in early education is an absolute win; for our school
district, our world, and most importantly, for our children. We are thrilled about the changes coming for the 2014-15 school year.”
For more information, please call 763-477-7500, or visit the Launching Pad Preschool website at www.earlychildhood.district.rockford.k12.mn.us.

Fun, Discovery & Learning at
Galaxy Kids All Year Long
Believe it or not, summer is finally here!
Galaxy Kids Summer Program kicks off June 9 through August 22. The ten-week
program is filled with engaging activities and friendships. Children are able to choose
from several different Interest Groups, like Gardening, Fun with Science, Art
Extravaganza, Gym Games and Cooking. They can also join in on our weekly themes
and activity days such as Yard & Field Games, Fun with Music, the ever popular Water
Day, Bike Day and field trips.
The Summer Program is a great way to transition preschool students that are registered
to attend Launching Pad Preschool in the fall. Children in grades K-6 will spend time
with old friends and have the opportunity to make new ones. Our program will provide
a summer filled with fun, laughter and friendship, all while enhancing a child’s
educational experience. Limited space is still available; please call us at 763-477-7555.
Galaxy Kids is a year-round school age care program for preschool through fourth
grade children with a summer program that includes preschool through sixth
grade. Located in the Rockford Elementary Arts Magnet School, care is available from 6am-6pm, Monday through Friday. We
offer flexible scheduling and unlimited vacation days with prior notice. Wraparound care is also offered for all preschool age
children who are enrolled in Launching Pad Preschool.
Look for 2014 fall registration materials to be available soon on our website: www.galaxy-kids.district.rockford.k12.mn.us. A
reduced registration fee is available for all Early Bird registrations completed by August 1, 2014.
Coming this fall is a new after-school program designed especially for fifth and sixth grade students at the middle school. This feebased program will include supervised activities, special events and homework help! Look for more information to come in August!

RMS Choirs Sing for Inspiration &“Miracles”
On Thursday, May 29, 2014, the sixth, seventh and eighth grade
choirs held their final concert of the year. Music selected for
performance was themed around hope, inspiration, happiness
and love. The grand finale was "Clouds" by Zach Sobiech - a
Minnesota native that battled childhood cancer.
During the week leading up to this inspirational concert, the
students at RMS-CES had a coin war with proceeds going to
The Miracles for Mitch Foundation, a local organization that
eases the financial and emotional impacts experienced by
families dealing with childhood cancer. With help of donations
at the concert and the coin wars, RMS-CES choir students raised
almost $900 for this organization!

REAMS Students Share Talents at
Annual Arts & Academics Night
On May 13, Rockford Elementary Arts Magnet School students shared their
wonderful talents during the annual Arts and Academics Showcase.
The showcase featured an array of student projects, artwork and live performances
throughout the school. Each classroom highlighted projects from the entire school
year ranging from barnyard buddies, the bird fair, Kadinsky tree art, ecosystem
dioramas and much more.
The world drumming ensemble, fourth and fifth grade choir, Celebration of Young
Musicians third grade piano students, and many solo and small group acts were
featured in a performance venue throughout the evening. Students had the
opportunity to share their talents through dance, singing and instrument playing.
Many of them worked up their own acts and got to share their favorite type of
performance. Fourth grade student Chloe Anderson stated, “I thought it was a really
good experience to show my talents to other people. It gave me a chance to show
others what I can do.”
Students also had the opportunity to connect with Rockford High School student
authors Lindsey Mason, Rebecca Nelson and Michael Cagle who were available to
share their process of writing the newly-released book, A Blast from the Past, A
Rockee Adventure. The book was created about the school mascot, Rockee, as he
visits the Ames-Florida- Stork House in Rockford. This is the
third book that has been written for the elementary school
students in the Reading with Rockee Series. Principal, Brenda
Petersmeyer shared, “Arts and Academics is a wonderful event
for all of our students. We have so much talent in the arts as
well as the academic areas and is such a treat to see it
highlighted in so many ways throughout the evening.”

Bringing the World to Rockford High School
Over the past four years, more than 40 exchange students from
all over the world have attended classes at Rockford High
School.
This year, ten students participated in the commencement
ceremony alongside the members of the Class of 2014.
Exchange students do not earn diplomas from Rockford High
School, but rather certificates of attendance because, in many
cases, the students have already graduated from school in their
home countries.
at RHS. Kazuki Hakoda, from Japan, said, “It was amazing. I
can tell my friends that Rockford High School is a great school.
I’m really glad to come to this school!” Marcelo Silva said, “It
was a great experience. I made a lot of friends and I’m glad I
came here.” Both students commented on how students made
them feel welcome and how helpful the teaching staff was.
Principal Jensen reiterated that the exchange students provide
Rockford students with the opportunity to learn about other
cultures and how to interact with other people who have different
backgrounds and experiences than them. He characterized it as a
“win-win” situation.
Compared to other Minnesota schools, Rockford probably ranks
near the top in the number of foreign exchange students attending
classes. When asked about that number, Principal Ryan Jensen
If any family is interested in hosting a foreign exchange student
replied, “It’s been our goal to have at least ten foreign exchange for the 2014-15 school year, they can contact Rockford High

cultural diversity that we wouldn’t have if they weren’t
attending.” Jensen also went on to
say, “It’s been my experience that the
exchange students who have attended
our school have largely indicated
they have had positive experiences.
The organizations that place students
routinely seek us out for the
opportunity to place students with
Rockford High School.”
The families of the Rockford Area
Schools have been very supportive
of the school’s desire to
accommodate that number of
students. Jensen commented,
“We’ve been fortunate that families
have stepped up to host these
students. While it is rewarding, it is
certainly a commitment that we’re
lucky to have so many willing to
make.”

Distinguished Alumni & Honorary Diploma Awarded
The Distinguished Alumni and Honorary Diploma recipients
were announced at the Rockford High School commencement
ceremony on June 5.
Congratulations to Marilyn Nelson as honorary diploma
recipient. She was chosen because of her life-long devotion to
children, commitment to learning and willingness to go above
and beyond what is asked of her. Marilyn taught in Rockford
from 1978-2004, establishing a gifted and talented program, an
arts and academic triathlon program, and a self-contained
classroom program to name a few. Since her retirement, Marilyn
continually substitute teaches at the middle school, provides
books for the lending library and participates in many school
events. In the community, she is currently active in the local
Lunch Box Fever program, helping to provide lunches for
children during the summer months.
The district also recognized the late Sandra Lupino as Rockford’s
distinguished alumni from the Class of 1961. She taught at Ralph
Bunche School in Flint, MI for 35 years, where she was named
teacher of the year in early 2000. Teaching her children was her
primary life and her students were her children. Sandy moved
back to Rockford in 2001 and passed away in 2011. She left her
legacy, not only at Ralph Bunche School where a hallway was
named Sandy Lane in her honor, but here in Rockford through
the Great River Regional Library, the Rockford Education
Foundation and ISD 883 Dollars for Scholars
This is the fourth year the district has recognized alumni and
community members for this award. Recipients are nominated by
staff and community members and determined by the Tradition
of Excellence committee annually. Last year, Bill Halverstadt
was the honorary diploma recipient and Dr. Perry Buffie was the
distinguished alumni recipient.
Pictured are (top right) Marilyn Nelson and her daughter, Laurie
Nelson, accepting the honorary diploma award; and (right),
accepting on behalf of Sandra Lupino, are Class of 2014
graduate and great-niece, Isabella Lupino, and Sandy’s brother
