supports Anchor House by golfing, sewing ditty bags, knitting caps
and igniting others with their enthusiasm. They will be featured in
next month’s newsletter. A great example of what mission support
looks like!

Survival to Sacrifice
I want to introduce you to a
Filipino seafarer, Ernesto. He is
the chief cook on a bulk carrier.
I boarded the ship and entered
the mess hall with magazines
for the crew. Ernesto joined me
for a cup of coffee. He
described his home in Manila.
I pictured it in my mind easily.
The city of ten million people
with multitudes of men, young
and old pushing roughly constructed wooden push carts
to collect scrap metal, glass, and bone to sell. Ernesto
told me he was a scrapper in Manila and pushed a cart.
Scrappers work hard to survive. Ernesto got a break and
a chance to go to school and now, here he is, onboard the
MV Balsa. He doesn’t scrap, but he does sacrifice,
spending months away from home at a time. Knowing
these people is such a privilege for me. Introducing them
to you is an honor.
One more friend on the sea
While leaving the gangway the other day, I stopped to
talk with the seafarer on watch. A young Filipino began
to share stories of his homeland. He grew up in a
location in northern Luzon, living on the Banaue rice
terrace.
“I carried rice
seedlings and helped
harvest,” he said. “All
of the work is done by
hand.”
These terraces are
2000-yrs. old. No machines are used due to the
steep mountain terrain. Google this location as it is
truly an amazing place.
We shared about Jesus Christ and he said he was a
believer and loved the Lord Jesus. I am amazed at
the remote places these young men come from and
how they end up at sea. Personal strength and
fortitude is admirable. It is a privilege to meet them
at our port, encourage them in their faith and share
in their lives. God is so good.
National Maritime Day
May 22, 2013, Port Manatee joined the nation in
National Maritime Day to honor those who labor on
Prayer
ships around the world. We also remember those
who lost lives at sea and who served in the Merchant
Marine during past and present wars, which
continues today by our Merchant Marines.
Chaplain Tim Huppert was an honored speaker at
this event where a wreath was placed in the port
waters. God’s blessing and rest be upon all families
connected with this holiday. National Maritime Day
was created by the United States Congress on May,
1933. Set in response to the date in 1819 that the
American steamship Savannah set sail from
Savannah, Georgia, on the first transoceanic voyage
under steam power.
We are requesting prayer for 16 seafarers who
met us for worship on the ship this past Sunday. Our good
friend, Ramon, from Fellowship of Believers, went with us to
tell the seafarers (in their language) about Christ. It was a
precious time as the asked questions, found answers, sang,
and prayed with us. All 16 prayed to receive Christ as their
Lord and when we offered Bibles and literature in their
language they were eager. One man has not seen his new
baby and another is asking that we pray for his wife to
conceive when he gets home again. Please focus your
prayers. They have requested prayer for their families, for
safety, and that the word of God will take root in their hearts
and give them hope and purpose.
