Simon is taking a class trip
to the Reynolds® Aluminum foil
plant. It is in Louisville, Kentucky.
Before the trip, Simon learns about
aluminum foil in his science class.
2
Aluminum is an element. Aluminum
is also a metal. Aluminum foil is a very
thin sheet of soft metal. You can bend,
tear or crumble it up into a ball. There
are many uses for aluminum foil.
3
Aluminum foil is used for cooking.
It is used when cooking on a grill or
in the oven. Do not put aluminum
foil in a microwave! Remember,
aluminum foil is a metal. Metal does
NOT go in the microwave.
4
Aluminum foil is used to wrap leftover
food. It can also be used to wrap new
food, like candy. Aluminum foil helps keep
food fresh. It protects food from bacteria.
5
Bacteria can cause food to spoil.
Spoiled food does NOT taste good.
Eating spoiled food can make you sick.
Aluminum foil protects food from bacteria.
6
Today is the class trip! Simon goes to
the Reynolds® Aluminum foil plant. It is
a factory. This factory makes aluminum
foil. Simon and his classmates take a
tour of the aluminum foil factory.
7
Aluminum foil was first used in the
United States in 1913. It was used
to wrap candy. Today we still use
aluminum foil to wrap candy. But before
we can use it, a factory must make it.
8
This factory makes aluminum foil.
Aluminum is first dug from the ground.
It is then brought to the factory. The
aluminum is heated into a liquid. The
liquid aluminum is then chilled into
a soft solid.
9
The soft aluminum is sent
to a rolling machine. The
machine rolls and flattens the
soft aluminum into a thin sheet.
10
The thin sheet of aluminum is rolled
up into boxes. The boxes are sent to
stores. You can buy aluminum foil in a
grocery store. Simon is given a small
box of aluminum foil to take back home.
11
Simon learned how aluminum foil
is made. He also learned how to use
aluminum foil. Simon goes home and
uses aluminum foil
to cook food.
