Molecular and I onic Compou nds By: John Dinaltide Diffe rences Molecular and ionic compounds are very different from one another, and therefore very easily recognized. One main difference between the two compounds is that molecular compounds consist of a metal and a non-‐metal, while ionic compounds consist of two non-‐metals. Also, molecular compounds contain only atoms, while ionic compounds contain ions. In order for a molecular compound to form, the electrons from the elements need to be transferred from one element to the other. This allows the molecular compounds to conduct electricity, but only when they are dissolved in water. Ionic compounds simply share the electrons. Molecular compounds can only exist as solids at room temperature, while a ionic compounds can exist in all states (solid, liquid and gas). Unfortunately, this also makes molecular compounds brittle. Naming There are different rules when it comes to naming molecular and ionic compounds. Here are a few examples of common molecular compounds: • disodium trichloride • carbon dioxide • tripotassium monoxide • monocarbon pentafluoride • dihydrogen monoxide Here are a few examples of common ionic compounds: • sodium chloride • disilver monchloride • magnesium chloride • sodium fluoride • tripotassium dibromide Science 9 Matter and Chemical Change Assignment 6 Molecular and Ionic Compounds As the editor of your magazine, it is often your job to review the work of writers that work for you. Please read the article located on the back of this page that is written by John Dinaltide. There are THIRTEEN MISTAKES that the writer made in relation to ionic and molecular compounds. It is your goal as the editor to FIND AND FIX all of the mistakes. They are located in both the “Differences” section (8 mistakes) and the “Naming” section (5 mistakes). When you find the mistakes in the “Differences” section, cross out the incorrect word(s) and make the statements true by replacing it with the correct word(s). When you find the mistakes in the “Naming” section, simply circle the mistake and explain the error. Article checklist: o Find all THIRTEEN MISTAKES. o Include the “good copy” of the article in your magazine.
