III.
Subgroup Report (Michael Bauer)
A. GEOG 101: Natural Environment - Modification
A question arose as to whether the Recommended Preparation should say
ENG 21 and ENG 22. The answer was that it is acceptable for the
Recommended Preparation to say ENG 21 or ENG 22.
In regard to SLO’s, a question was raised as to where the word “examine”
falls in Bloom’s Taxonomy. It falls under Analysis.
In Field #13, is it acceptable not to answer the question: “How is it related
to courses and programs in other disciplines?” The proposer can say: “It
is not related.”
Action: 20 Approved, 0 Disapproved, 0 Abstained
Approval subject to the following stipulations:
(1) Field #20: add the word “science” after “physical” in the 2nd sentence;
(2) Field #23: delete the date of the textbook;
(3) Field #37: change “LCC” to “Leeward CC”;
(4) Field #39: add the discipline vote.
IV.
Subgroup Report (Julie Sagliano)
A. MATH 140X: Accelerated Pre-Calculus – New
Ryan Girard explained that the X in the course number designates an
accelerated course. This class combines material that is covered in MATH
1
135 and MATH 140. Students take two 100-level Math classes before
MATH 205.
In regard to prerequisites (Field #7), Ryan indicated that the
“Algebra II End-Of-Course Exam” is a high-school level test offered in
place of the Compass. This came out of an agreement between the
Department of Education (DOE) and the University of Hawai„i.
Ryan informed the Curriculum Committee that the UHM‟s MATH
140 is not the same as the Leeward CC MATH 140, in that UHM‟s
MATH 140 combines the material in MATH 135 and MATH 140. So the
proposed MATH 140X will be comparable to UHM‟s MATH 140 (Field
#12). It was pointed out that there might be an issue regarding the course
number because of the use of the “X,” so the course number might need to
be modified.
It was pointed out that if the Curriculum Committee approves a
course, that does not mean that the course meets the Hallmarks for
Foundation Symbolic Reasoning (FS) (Field #14).
Action: 19 Approved, 0 Disapproved, 0 Abstained, 1 Blank

Subgroup Report (Michael Bauer)
B. GEOG 101L: Natural Environment Lab – Modification
A question arose as to whether this is an articulated course (Field #31).
Chair Berner will ask about this for GEOG 101 and GEOG 101L.
Action: 20 Approved, 0 Disapproved, 0 Abstained
Approval subject to the following stipulations:
(1) Field #9 should say “ENG 21 or ENG 22”;
(2) Field 34, item a: capitalize the first word;
(3) Fields #35 & 36: replace “N/A” with “This is not offered as a Distance
Education course”;
(4) Field #37: correct the catalog date and change “LCC” to “Leeward CC”;
(5) Field #39: add the discipline vote.
C. ENG 251: British Literature I (Middle Ages – 1800) – Modification
It was pointed out that “WI” should not appear in the title of the course.
ENG 251 is not a writing intensive course for all instructors or on all
campuses. Chair Berner will ask Thanh Giang to delete the “WI.” Other
200-level ENG classes which have the “WI” designation in their title also
need to be corrected.
Action: 20 Approved, 0 Disapproved, 0 Abstained

Approval subject to the following stipulations:
(1) Field #12: change “guest lecturers” to “lecturers”;
(2) Field #13: correct the date of for the Strategic Plan – it should say
2015, not 20015;
(3) Fields #14 and #28 are mutually contradictory: Field #14 says that this
course does not replace any course currently offered at LCC, whereas
Field #28 says that it replaces “the existing experimental course BIOL
197-C”;
(4) Field #35: delete the reference to the Tech Mentoring Program and put
“Technology Training” instead.

VIII. Subgroup Report (Michael Bauer)
Several concerns and questions regarding the proposed Plant Bioscience
Technology Program and its courses were addressed to the proposer.
There was concern about the fact that there are links in various fields in the
course outlines for these courses. At some point, those links could become
7
outdated or broken. The proposer will attach the documents instead of just
putting links in these fields.
Q: What is the meaning of “seed to seed” in Field #11?
A: The proposer explained it as the process of harvesting one plant and using
its seed to create a new plant.
Q: Why is Leeward CC not mentioned in the Articulation Agreement referred
to in Fields #20 and #31?
A: These are new classes, so they are not in the Articulation Agreement.
Q: Why isn‟t UH Manoa offering these classes?
A: The College of Tropical Agriculture at UH Manoa was re-organized and
now it doesn‟t have some of the faculty who could have taught them.
UHM would like to farm out some of the low-level classes. Leeward CC
is filling a void here.
Q: Should the ASC Plant Bioscience Technology be an A.S. (i.e., a two-year
degree) instead of an ASC (i.e., a minor)? Is this proposal bypassing the
normal process for creation of a degree?
A: An ASC is usually a certificate program for courses that are already being
offered. Employers would like to have employees with a Bachelor‟s
degree. The ASC is a compromise. It is less onerous to get it going.
Also, industry is looking for workers with this training. As of now, eight
students have finished this program.
Q: How are the classes being funded?
A: There is funding from a Perkins Grant, but when those funds end, the costs
will be borne by the Discipline. There are two sources of funding for
these proposed courses. The Perkins Grant is for 27 months; after that, it
is possible to re-apply for the grant. There is also a USDA Consortium
Grant, which is system-wide.
Q: Will other classes need to be cut if the Discipline takes over the funding of
these classes?
A: It depends on the demand for these classes. Initially, enrollment was low.
Because of the Perkins Grant, it is acceptable to proceed with the courses
with low enrollment. All of the Voc/Tech Programs vie for the same
source of funds.
Other points were raised by the proposer:
 Many of these course are offered on other campuses.
8
 Much of the agricultural land on O‟ahu is on this side of the island.
Leeward CC is in the middle of this agricultural land. Leeward CC is a
bottle-neck.
 These proposed PBT courses replace experimental courses. The real
courses need to be approved by Spring 2011.
E. PBT 141: Integrated Pest Management – New
Action: 18 Approved, 2 Disapproved, 0 Abstained
F. PBT 200: Introduction to Plant Science – New
Action: 15 Approved, 4 Disapproved, 1 Abstained
Approval subject to the following stipulations:
(1) Field #19: add an explanation as to how the course relates to other
courses in the system, not just a link to the course syllabus;
(2) Fields #29 & 30: should say “N/A”;

It was pointed out that the prerequisites seem to be at a rather high level.
Action: 15 Approved, 3 Disapproved, 2 Abstained
Approval subject to the following stipulations:
(1) Field #26: add information about sources of funding: Perkins Grant,
USDA Grant, the Discipline;
(2) Field #34: answer the question about the methods that will ensure
“timely and effective interaction.”

IX.
Subgroup Report (Julie Sagliano)
B. ASC Plant Bioscience Technology – New
Regarding item #4, the question arose as to whether Leeward CC‟s current
students would be given priority to enroll in this program. The answer
was yes.
In Item #5, the word “College” should be replaced with “Division.”
A question arose regarding Item #5, which indicates that there are costs
involved in this program for a Counselor and an APT Lab Manager. The
proposer said that it is not certain how the Counselor position would be
funded. The APT Lab Manager position is now a casual hire position paid
for with Perkins Grant money. A living lab has been funded by a Perkins
Grant, the CTE Dean, and the Math & Science Division, and it is being
staked out.
