REFORMATION 500 Hi from Pastor Bill, In my September Newsletter article, I mentioned about 500th anniversary of the Reformation – the start of it for most people began with the nailing of 95 Theses on a castle door in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther meant it as points of discussion. It became a rallying cry for those being oppressed by the Church. The oppression came in the form of indulgences – payment to have less time in purgatory. The payment was to a corrupt Church. In the book, When Lightning Struck: The Story of Martin Luther, by Danika Cooley, there is a quote that shows us the spiritual dilemma that Luther was experiencing. He was trying to live faithfully as a monk of the church, and yet he was struggling with church practice, because what he was reading in Scripture did not explain the current practice of indulgences – in any way. He had finished reading the Bible through. Then he says to his superior, “I am confused. I preach the message of the church in Rome – the pope’s message – that if a man confesses each and every sin, and does his penance, he will be saved – saved to purgatory, where he will pay again for his sins. Yet, how does a man know that he has confessed every sin? How does he know that he has found every stray thought and repented?” A spiritual dilemma that could only be resolved by standing up against the current practice of selling indulgences to spend less time in purgatory, or be freed totally from that fiery pit, or to free a parent or other loved one from that fat. So, 500 years ago, at the end of this month, on October 31, 1516, Martin preached against indulgences for the first time. As he studied, then he preached, leading to more studying and searching of the Scriptures. What he found, is that place called purgatory, a place to purge sins, did not exist in Scripture. Luther did find that rallying cry for him and the beginnings of a possible reforming church from Ephesians: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (2:8) We cannot earn our way into heaven, nor can we buy our way into heaven, through purgatory by way of buying a piece of paper that says there have been ‘so many days’ taken off of your purgatory experience. Grace with God’s unconditional love, and complete trust in this loving God through Jesus Christ is God’s gift to us. Luther then began more and more to realize that he must oppose the Church and the pope. His passion and fervor fueled the events of transition. Last month, I called for a season of Reformation for us here at KLC – a time of renewal and revival in our own personal lives and in the life of our church. It also needs to be a time of reflection – a time to reflect on God’s goodness, and our response of gratitude. We can reflect on these questions: “What is God up to here at KLC?” and “What is God up to in me?” We are a reforming church, constantly viewing the world through a “God-lens,” with a godly perspective in mind. Of course, that’s not easy, because everyday life is also crucial, but letting our minds and hearts be a little more opened to the moving of God around us gives us added perspective. Our challenges and prayer this month: to get the crop in, to enjoy our families, to enjoy the sports events and music events in our community, to enjoy the fall colors, to keep making ends meet, to reach out to others when we see a need in our own neighborhood, to reach out to someone when we are at our wits end and need that same encouragement! God bless your lives and all the “stuff of life” that happen in this month of October. KERKHOVEN LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING Next Council Meeting: October 5, 2016 Boards meet at 7:00 pm Council Meet at 7:30 PM Evangelism and Outreach Board News: KLC Backpack Ministry: KLC has begun the school year backpack program as of Friday, September 24. Notice of the need for 55 backpacks this year resulted in a quick run to shop for additional backpacks and appreciation for the food that was delivered by Second Harvest Heartland on September 13. When the food order was place it was anticipated that this would be adequate food to distribute the backpacks until after Christmas break, based upon the previous year’s numbers for needed backpacks. This year the need is significantly greater and after the first Friday of filling this number of backpacks we have realized that we will again need to order food to be delivered in October. In previous years the initial number of backpacks usually decreases somewhat as the need and the enrollment of the schools change due to the number of students who are open enrolled. However we are needing to be prepared in the event that it remains stable or increases. This being the case the backpack fund is rapidly depleting and we are in need of additional donations. The Evangelism and Outreach Board is currently selling Community Days coupon books to assist in the fund raising. These booklets sell for a $5.00 donation to KLC, we keep the entire amount and the first coupon in the book is for $10.00 off an item. In the past there were a lot of restrictions on the use of the coupons and so customers would become frustrated trying to find items that were eligible for use on purchases. The restrictions have been changed and the coupons are now usable even for yellow dot and bonus buy items. Someone will be selling the books during coffee time between services and they will be available for purchase anytime the church office is open. The board will also be serving a Thanksgiving eve meal prior to the service on November 23, with dessert to follow the service. All proceeds will be designated to go to the backpack program. Watch the bulletins and November Messenger for more information. Ridgewater Campus Ministry Center: KLC served another noon meal at the Campus Ministry Center on Tuesday, September 27. We brought with us 16 casseroles, a large roaster of scalloped potatoes and ham and a large assortment of bars and cookies. After serving all who came we had very few leftovers. It is difficult to have an exact count of the number served but an estimate would be 120-130 students. The collected items for the kitchen and food shelf were also delivered on this same day and it was so nice to have enough serving spoons and potholders along with some much fuller shelves in the food shelf room. Thank You All!!! From the Evangelism and Outreach Board Thank you to the following people who helped unload and put away the Second Harvest Heartland delivery on Tuesday, September 13: Kent Baker, Barney and Jean Lilly, Phyllis and Lee Meyer, Marlene and Eldon Hauge, Evelyn Williams and Ted Meyer. Your help was greatly appreciated. Thank you to the following people who donated and/or served the noon meal at the Campus Ministry Center on Tuesday, September 27: Phyllis Meyer, Mona Doering, Judy Halverson, Naomi Baker, Faye Helms, Marlene Hauge, Mary Miller, Jane Quale, Barb Wenisch, Caroline Chan, Evelyn Williams, Pam Johnson and Ann Hanson. Your generosity is so appreciated by the students. A constant thank you for the food is heard throughout the serving time. Thank you to everyone who so generously donated items to the food shelf at Ridgewater Campus Ministry Center and the kitchen items that were donated and many already put to good use when we served on Tuesday. There were already students who were picking up needed items from the food shelf while we were there. If you would like to share a book that you have read, please write a short review of the book and let us know about the book and how we also might access and read it. In light of the upcoming 500 year celebration of the Reformation I ordered the following book from Augsburg Fortress and while it is written in comic book style I found it to be very entertaining and while the story in Papa Luther is mostly made up, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t tell a true story. This exciting story of Martin Luther is told through the eyes of his children Hans and Magda. This colorful, 88-page “comic book” is geared especially toward children ages 8 to 13, but will intrigue all ages. Many of the places and events in the book really did take place – some of them we know for certain happened. With others we aren’t so sure. Written by Daniel D. Maurer it gives a historical perspective to what was happening in the late medieval times and that Luther’s actions were the main cause of the Protestant Reformation. It also looks at Luther’s relationship with his children, and theirs with him. Luther managed not only to transform the course of the world, but also to pass on the love of Jesus Christ by sharing his story with his children. I would be willing to share my copy of the book to anyone who would like to read this.
