Love your Bones 10th Birthday Craig Revel Horwood puts his best foot forward for bone health on 22nd June, Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. Craig Revel Horwood, Strictly Come Dancing judge and Patron of the National Osteoporosis Society, will be attending the 10th anniversary celebrations of Portsmouth’s Love Your Bones Conference in June to help raise awareness of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to weaken and become more likely to break. The event, organised by the Department of Rheumatology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and the Portsmouth and District branch of National Osteoporosis Society’s Support Group network, is expected to draw in over 500 people either living with the condition or keen to learn more about bone health and how to prevent osteoporosis. “I’m delighted to support the National Osteoporosis Society. Dancing, running, walking and skipping are all FAB-U-LOUS ways to keep bones strong!” Craig said. Throughout the day attendees will be able to meet representatives from the National Osteoporosis Society, a number of other local and national charities supporting people living with other long term conditions, hear the latest research from health professionals on ways to maintain good bone health and prevent osteoporosis through lifestyle changes and medication. Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth currently has around 350 patients with osteoporosis and more than 100 local and regional wide healthcare professionals learning more about the condition. Sr Amanda Finnegan, Fracture Liaison Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Trust, said of the event: “We are delighted that Craig Revel Horwood will be joining us again this year. As a long-standing supporter of the National Osteoporosis Society, it's great that he will be with us to help raise awareness of bone health and osteoporosis and the work of the local National Osteoporosis Society Support Group". Colin Beevor, Matron and Service Manager at Queen Alexandra Hospital, said: "It's amazing to see how over 10 years these patient and public conferences have evolved and the level of amazing support they have from other local charities, organisations and health care professionals.” Claire Jeffries, Rheumatology Physiotherapy Manager, promised the event would highlight important messages about exercise and bone health. “Exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, is important for people of all ages but is especially important for people with osteoporosis and at risk of fractures. It helps build strong bones in your early years and helps maintain their strength later in life. Weight-bearing exercise is any exercise in which you are supporting your own body weight through your feet and legs (or hands and arms), and dancing is a good example of this.” The Conference and anniversary celebrations will be held on Wednesday 22nd June 2016 at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth. There will be approximately 40 exhibition stands at the event, featuring local charities and organisations.
