Pricing will be discussed.** Better Than Jam’s STORE & STUDIO (Better Than Jam LLC), herein referred to as BTJ, provides a self­service studio to all of its renters. Renters should be familiar with tools and equipment that they use. If you need assistance and/or instruction with the use of the studio, please make arrangements with the Studio Manager prior to your scheduled time. By signing the Studio Use and Approval Form, Liability Waiver attached you acknowledge your understanding of the following, and any additional, policies. The following guidelines have been developed to maximize your safety as well as to minimize conflict with other users. Please behave responsibly and cooperatively by adhering to the few simple rules and procedures contained in these guidelines. Above all, respect the space, each other, and each other’s work and personal property. Participation in unsupervised use of the STUDIO carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injuries. The Studio is committed to a policy of safer practices. We are safer, cleaner, and less toxic than most communal facilities, but even household chemicals may be harmful if used incorrectly. Chemicals not approved by the Studio Management must not be brought into the Studio; the Studio is managed by Karin Persan. All volunteers, interns and and renters must take responsibility for safety issues. ❏ No member may use the studio without either attending an orientation session before using either the facilities or equipment. Please make proper arrangements at least 30 min prior to use. ❏ BTJ reserves the right to deny access to any member who consistently ignores the rules. ❏ 2nd floor studio is private and NO access is permitted. ❏ Familiarize yourself with the Emergency Exits. ❏ In case of incident contact Studio Manager, or STORE clerk immediately. ❏ No solvents, oil­based paints or other chemicals may be used in the STUDIO without permission. Any art­making that involves dust, air borne debris or toxic fumes must be done in the ventilated area. This includes cutting or sanding wood or other materials that create dust, welding, cutting or grinding metal, working with Plaster of Paris and spray painting. Oil painting or any painting involving excessive fumes must be done the ventilated area, which has the appropriate ventilation system. Any disposal of paint, dirty rags containing solvents or toxic materials must be done in the appropriate containers, and sealed properly. ❏ NOTHING TOXIC or THICKENED MAY BE EMPTIED IN THE SINKS. Place solvent cleanup rags in proper receptacles. ❏ You are responsible for properly managing all materials used in your work, in compliance with health and safety rules; any work or exhibitions must be done in approved venues. ❏ There is no alcohol allowed in the STUDIO, and food must stay in appropriate and approved areas. If these areas are being used, you must eat and drink off site. ❏ The studios are not to be used for residency. And are only accessible during rental agreement terms. ❏ Use chemicals in well­ventilated locations and with permission only. ❏ Debris and spills must be cleaned up immediately to prevent trip and fall situations. ❏ If you do not know how to use/handle something, ask. Do not use any equipment or print process that you are not familiar with. ❏ If something is not working, do not force it—you may be doing more harm than good. ❏ Do not bring friends, family, children or pets onto the premises during classes or access. Only those authorized by STUDIO MANAGER are permitted access to the premises. ❏ Wear gloves, aprons & other protective items such as goggles & masks as required. Wear appropriate clothing and enclosed, sturdy shoes at all times. Tie back long hair ­ it may get caught in the presses. ❏ You should not use the studio at all under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or heavy medications. If you are, you will be asked to vacate premises with no refund. Waiver/Contract may be null and void subject to no renewal. ❏ Take care when using blades. NO cutting on tables with matte knives or box cutters is allowed without a cutting mat. Studio Etiquette: ❏ CLEAN and put away all workshop equipment, tools and inks in designated areas. Wipe equipment clean and free of ink with appropriate cleaner and store in designated area. Wipe counters, press beds, handles and glasstops after EVERY studio use. ❏ Sweep floor if necessary.. ❏ Remove all trash and empty in main bin at front/side doorway. ❏ Always stack prints on drying racks from the bottom, up. ❏ Unfortunately, this is a communal studio and Better Than Jam’s STORE & STUDIO cannot be held responsible for anything that may go missing or is lost/stolen. It is best to take all of your belongings with you when you leave. ​
Security Cameras are installed, working, and recording. Better Than Jam’s STORE & STUDIO is locked and secure each night. ❏ Do not remove anything from the studio that is not yours. Left personal items should be given to the Studio Manager. ❏ “Food cart;” Make sure to wash all cups, mugs plates and silverware used. Food scraps should be taken off premises. No food should be left in refrigerator over night. Leave the “coffee cart” clean; free of crumbs and liquids. ❏ Be respectful of other studio users property and projects. ❏ Music is played in STORE during appropriate hours. Personal players shall be listened to with headphones. ❏ Inks & Other Consumable Items: Users of the Studio are expected to provide their own inks and paper, fabrics, tshirts, thread, needles, etc, etc. Other consumable items, such as rags, should be replenished if the Studio's are used. Storage: Studio Manager and STORE storage is kept in many of the flat files, shelves and filing cabinets throughout the building. Members are not permitted to go through these drawers or shelves, and are not permitted to use materials that are not readily available. ❏ Individual storage lockers can be purchased for a nominal monthly fee. ❏ Materials left outside of these drawers and crates will be considered a donation to the organization and will become property of BTJ. ❏ No locks may be placed on lockers without signing up for them. ❏ You must prepay, and all locks must be combination. Equipments/Usage: ❏ Slop Sink (bathroom): This sink and rinse off area must be kept clean. No solvents are to be washed down the sink. Materials that need to be cleaned with solvent must be cleaned up outside at the box. Hot and cold water is available at this sink. Use caution when turning on hot water. Cleanser is stored here, please use if you cause a mess. ❏ Screen Washing Sink: Only for use in washing our silk screens or with permission. Only COLD water should be used at this sink. Warm/Hot water will break down your screens. ❏ Other Equipment: Always leave equipment and tools, where you got them and CLEAN. Always read cleaning instructions posted on studio walls. All tools must be returned to their storage area after use. ❏ SOLVENTS: • Use ventilation fan • Solvents must be kept capped when not being used. • Materials (paintbrushes, rags, containers, and paper) with solvent or etching ground must be placed in proper disposal containers. • Solvents and flammable chemicals must be returned to appropriate shelf. • Cleaning solutions must be stored away from other chemicals. • No solvents can be washed down the sink’s drain. ❏ Spills must be cleaned up immediately to prevent slips and falls. Contact Studio Manager for large spills. ❏ Power/Pressure Washer: The pressure washer should only be used to reclaim a screen (removing emulsion or stencil from the screen). It should not be used to remove ink, unexposed emulsion or stains. The pressure washer must only be run with cold water and must not be left on between or after uses. The pressure can be adjusted by turning the wand end 360 degrees. Never reclaim a screen from too close a distance or with a sharp stream of water; this will cause damage to the screen. Hose with nozzle attachment: To remove ink, unexposed emulsion or any water­based media, use the green hose and brass nozzle attachment. This pressure can be adjusted by turning the nozzle 360 degrees. Reservations and Studio Facilities Reservations: Our studio can accommodate up to 15 artists a day, during business hours. Maximum monthly renters have extended studio, but still must reserve. Accommodations may shift slightly based on an artist’s needs. To reserve time in the studio, please contact the Studio Manager at [email protected] (929) 295­0894. Please plan on booking a minimum 2 days in advance; cancellations should be made 24 hours in advance. The Studio Use Calendar is posted on the of our website. Questions and requests should be directed to the Studio Manager. You can always call day of to make sure equipment and/or space is free. Current renters of BTJ, must pay the rent by the first of the month to have studio access and discounts. Payment is accepted in the form of check, Chase QuickPay, PayPal, or Square Invoicing. Security deposit is required for month to month use. It will be returned no more than 30 days after you have decided to discontinue use of the STUDIO. I hereby assert that my participation is voluntary and that I knowingly assume all such risks. I also agree to indemnify and hold BTJ harmless from any and all claims, actions, suits, procedures, costs, expenses, damages and liabilities, including attorney’s fees brought as a result of my involvement in the STUDIO, and to reimburse them for any such expenses incurred. I have read this waiver of liability, assumption of risk, and indemnity agreement, fully understand its terms, and understand that I am giving up substantial rights, including my right to sue. I acknowledge that I am signing the agreement freely and voluntarily, and intend by my signature to be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law. I am responsible for maintaining security at BTJ by keeping the door locked, stay out of the STORE space when it is closed, and I agree not to give the key code to another person. Guests must be approved by Studio Manager. Further, I am responsible for maintaining the safety and security of guests at receptions or events at BTJ, and I am responsible for keeping guests out of the STORE during closed hours. By signing this waiver, I acknowledge that I have read the Safety Rules and Studio Policy sheet and have filled out this form to the best of my knowledge.
