Have you placed your order for tree
seedlings? If not, you still have time. The
Adams Soil and Water Conservation
District (SWCD) would like to remind
everyone that our annual tree seedling
sale is still going on. This program assists
landowners in purchasing low-cost tree
seedlings. Tree planting provides
erosion control, windbreaks, and wildlife
shelter, aside from just improving the
appearance of your property.
We are still taking orders for two year
old White Pine and Norway Spruce
bare root seedlings, which will be
available for Spring planting. Seedlings
are sold in packs of 25 for $15.
If you have never taken advantage of
our tree seedling program you may not
be aware how easy the planting process
can be. Many customers don’t realize
that one pack of 25 tree seedlings can
be held in your hand, so transportation
from our office to home is very easy.

HAZELBAKER GRADUATES LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
During the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ (OFSWCD) 73rd
Annual Conservation Partnership Conference, “Champions of Conservation” sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America, Jack
Hazelbaker, Adams Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Supervisor and
OFSWCD Secretary-Treasurer officially
graduated from the “Tom Spellmire Academy of Conservation Leadership.” Hazelbaker was presented with a Leadership
Graduate Certificate and Leadership Pin by
Greg Davis, Associate Director of the Ohio
State University Extension Community Development, during the “Legends and Legacies” Luncheon on Tuesday.
Ohio’s 88 SWCDs are leaders in addressing
conservation resource programs and challenges throughout the state. The leadership program, created by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD) with the guidance and
direction of OSUE, is offered to the
OFSWCD’s 440 county Supervisors and 500
plus SWCD employees. It was designed to
further develop and strengthen the skills of
these individuals for effective leadership
and advocacy.
This year’s OFSWCD “Legends and Legacies” Award Luncheon, sponsored by the
Ohio Soybean Council, recognized a number of individuals for outstanding conservation efforts for 2015, including teachers,
supervisors, SWCD staff, and landowners.
The event’s attendance included over 500
conservation leaders representing the local, state and federal government, farmers,
business owners and many more. The
Meeting is conducted yearly in Columbus
and is focused on conservation training,
development, education and outreach. For
more information on conservation programs and practices, please contact the
OFSWCD at 614.784.1900.
“Leadership is defined as having the ability
to lead, guide, direct or influence. We have
worked hard to create an effective program
that’s brings our expertise with the expertise of the SWCDs to further develop and
assist these individuals in their efforts to
get conservation on the ground,” shared
Director Davis. “This partnership is growing, so are the participants!”
OFSWCD CEO Mindy Bankey shared, “The
Ohio State University has been a true friend
and collaborator with our county SWCDs.
Jack, along with the rest of those who have
participated, has benefitted greatly through
the leadership sessions and through the
interaction with the Presenter,” Bankey
noted, “Our organization is proud of Jack’s
commitment to making himself a stronger
leader for the district and our organization.
And, we look forward to this continued
partnership with our friends at Ohio State
to further strengthening this program in
the future as we continue to serve the
state of Ohio’s citizens.”
*The Academy of Conservation Leadership program
was named on behalf of Warren SWCD Supervisor
Tom Spellmire, who passed away unexpectedly in
2013. Tom’s passion for conservation was evident
with everyone he interacted with throughout his life.
He firmly believed in leadership training and advocacy.
The program is designed to focus on key leadership
classes that are offered throughout the two annual
meetings of the OFSWCD. To graduate, a participant
must complete 10 courses ranging from a diverse class
catalog.
25th Ohio Brush Creek Sweep
Adams SWCD and Adams Brown Recycling are already making plans
for the 25th Annual Ohio Brush Creek Sweep. Save the date:
Saturday May 14, 2016. The section of creek we will clean up this
year has not been determined yet and may be a last minute
decision as we monitor water levels. As always, you should register
early to ensure a space. Requirements to participate are simple: a
desire to make a positive impact on our environment and not
afraid of working hard and getting dirty. Ability to swim is
recommended but not required. Adams SWCD will provide trash
bags, canoes, paddles, and life jackets as well as a safety
orientation. Participants will need to dress prepared to get wet and
dirty. Bring your own lunch and work gloves. Minors must be
accompanied by an adult. Don’t delay, register today by calling the
Adams SWCD office at 937-544-1010.

THANKS TO OUR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS and STATE LEGISLATORS
We are appreciative that the Adams Soil &
Water Conservation District Supervisors and
Staff have a good working relationship with our
Adams County Commissioners. We want to
thank Commissioners Brian Baldridge, Stephen
Caraway, and Paul Worley for their support and
dedication to our conservation efforts. Their
continued financial support at the county level
draws matching funds from the State of Ohio
which enables Adams SWCD to provide conservation assistance, information, and education
to all Adams County residents. Please join us in
thanking our County Commissioners, State Sen.
Joe Uecker and State Rep. Terry Johnson. With
their support, we will continue working toward
our mission of “providing leadership and
services that enable our District to conserve,
protect, and enhance our natural resources.”
